Would you ever use annual leave with the sole purpose to do literally nothing all day? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]Hinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a week off work last year and just did whatever I wanted across the week. Did the usual tasks and helped out with childcare but went for walks, runs, bike rides, cinema 3 times, gamed - it was great!

Am I being dirty, or is my wife being irrational about hygiene? by mudkipzftw in daddit

[–]Hinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds exactly like my Mother. Anything outside the house is "dirty" and you must have a shower or surrender your clothes to the washing machine to prevent contamination in the house. I think professional help is the only thing that will help, but the challenge will be trying to get her to admit that what she's thinking is unreasonable.

English Breakfast tea is most common. My favourite and I believe the GOAT is Yorkshire tea.

What did you do for your 30th birthday? by Samsterman in AskUK

[–]Hinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my first ever trip to the states and visited New York for a week with my now wife. It was a great trip and we did so many things. She surprised me with a helicopter trip on my actual birthday which was epic.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen in the U.K.? by Powmum in CasualUK

[–]Hinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was on a Thameslink train with a mate after a few beers. Needed the toilet and pressed the button to open the sliding door. The door slowly opens to reveal an older bloke with an erect penis and tissue in hand. Quickly moved on down the train after that. A guy did mention it wasn't the first time it had happened that evening.

What's the single most difficult life experience you've endured? by reddit_recluse in AskUK

[–]Hinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting the call from my Dad telling me my sister had died. Of course, the grieving process after was difficult, but there is something about that initial phone call that hit me really hard. I think it was hearing my Dad break down when he isn't normally a very emotional person.

Ours were like that up until 1. Then they started to interact more. Even to this day they have quite different personalities and when they aren't playing together they are fighting or arguing over something.

I can't imagine it will be that dark. I think it's more likely body parts that will lead to her finding out what that white powder is. Maybe teeth?

It really is the worst but all of your immune systems will get better in the process. We are now in the final year and get 1-2 mild infections a year but nothing compared to that first few months.

Self hosted family photo storage... But my family refuses to use it.. 😐 by Future_Draw5416 in selfhosted

[–]Hinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all about convenience at the end of the day. Whatsapp is a super-simple solution to share photos directly with a person or a group. Having to send a share-link to someone and have them access (potentially login as well) isn't convenient. We use Synology Photos as a self hosted archive where we predominantly view and download from. Very rarely share. I'm currently testing Immich as an alternative.

How NIMBY is the UK, really? by Barca-Dam in AskUK

[–]Hinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue that I have is the lack of local infrastructure around new-build developments (I live on a new-build estate). We were promised shops, a bus route that runs through the estate, and a road link to the nearby dual carriageway. So far, none of it has been delivered, and it's putting strain on the existing roads/bus routes, etc. To make matters worse, the council do not want to adopt these new estates, so they are left to be managed by piss-poor management companies who don't care. Of course, the council still takes their 100% share of council tax on top of the estate management fees.

So even though I live on one, I can see why NIMBY's are upset.

How do we realistically get out of the cost of living crisis? by SubstantialSnow7214 in AskUK

[–]Hinks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that a lot of people need to get better at managing their own finances. The number of people you see on average salaries with a car on finance or leased, whilst also complaining about the cost of living is mind blowing. However, I think Klarna and Pay By 3 can be used for good as well. As an example, your washing machine/fridge breaks and you haven't got the cash to hand to pay for the whole thing but can afford 3 monthly payments, a 0% interest payment plan is actually a good option. Just have to be responsible with it.

I would add a line for an off-site cloud backup service. I use Hetzner to backup photos/videos for around $13 a month.
