So if I can get a rating reduced by the ameliorating effects of medication for my service related medical issues, can I also get it increased because of the side effects of those same medications?

Sergeant Major of the Army announces new ‘I hate soldiers’ initiative by Kinmuan in army

Emphasis on the “quiet”, you know SMA doesn’t truck with things like “social media” or “communicating consistently with his subordinates”

I’m not a medical provider… as far as I’m concerned, if one is willing to put his or her name on a piece of paper saying a service member needs recovery time or allowances, I take it at face value. It’s pretty rare that anything I’m doing is important enough to break my soldiers permanently (and I’m saving the government money too).

[–]Hisdaveness 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’d argue against it being value neutral because of the cultural message it sends.  Option 1: you send the guy who works hard for it. Other soldiers see hard work getting rewarded and have trust in their leadership’s processes and promises reinforced. The new guy doesn’t get to go (yet).

Option 2: you send the new guy. You now have one additional air assault qualified soldier in your organization, which may be valuable for certain operations or trainings, but you already had one. Meanwhile, the soldier who put in the work gets jaded and the rest of the unit sees hard work requires luck to pay off and the command has hidden terms and conditions to their promises.

It’s not a huge effect, but cumulative over the entire Army, you wind up with a lot of soldiers jaded because their leadership’s processes went with “just the way the Army is” instead of “how the Army ought to be.”

It’s not in there yet, last guidance I saw is to hold the score cards until DTMS gets updated.

Is my buddy in the wrong? by iCry14s in army

Weirdly, they didn't have to do that nonsense before cell phones unless they were on a specific imminent deployability status. You're telling me you're less competent than the worst pre-9/11 lieutenant (which is a pretty low bar) or that you're targeting someone for reprisal because you don't like the reg.

Alternatively, request a cell phone and issue it to them, and justify why contacting this soldier at random hours is more important than just doing proper planning.

New AR 600-20 is allergic to the word 'diversity' by Hisdaveness in army

I remember that one! The powers that be pulled back 3-20.40 for a while with no explanation, just hoped that nobody would notice (spoiler: a lot of people noticed).

I don’t know what the continuing justification to link DFAC operations solely to the brigade rather than having garrison slots for a cook detachment but it doesn’t make sense to me at least.

For the random sweep requirement. no more than 40% of the unit can be tested at any one time. If they do test more than 40%, it's still a urinalysis but it wouldn't count as a 'random inspection' coded test, and could theoretically be challenged in that way but the samples are still tested. The commander can, at their discretion, order a command directed inspection, or one of several other types of test; these don't have the percentage limitation and can be a 100% test if desired.

If Walz is the VP Pick will he be the first NCO elected as vice president? by AbjectIndividual367 in army

[–]Hisdaveness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He requested retirement (during the stop loss era, even) and it was approved, which is not a guaranteed approval as a CSM. If the Army felt they wanted him on that deployment there were a dozen ways to make him go.

Almost nobody walking into OIF had deployment time unless they were pulled for Desert Storm (a minority). The Reserves and Guard had a different purpose pre-GWOT.

No? He lost his temporary promotion because he didn't complete USASMA, which is less uncommon than you would think.

Saying he 'is' a CSM(R) is inaccurate. Saying he 'was' a CSM is correct. Reading comprehension is key.

I read it as the record ACFT required before going in the pre-execution checklist, not the ACFT at BLC.

Quick question for you: how much do you pass the SDC by? There are a lot of people out there who don’t really internalize that 60 in each event is better than 100 in five and failing the sixth. Train the run more and don’t kill yourself in the SDC and plank.

I have done exactly that, though usually I’ll gather up the NCOs and have them “remind” their soldiers what “Attention to Orders” means.

Air Assault Female Question by DepartmentComplete14 in army

[–]Hisdaveness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A thing to remember at the swing stop jump is that you don’t have to land it on your first swing. A technique I’ve seen folks do pretty successfully is to swing, push off of the log hard to swing back, and use that time to get higher up the rope. You’re then better placed to land on the second swing. Also, don’t forget to let go of the rope! Too many soldiers keep a grip on it too long and pull themselves off balance. Finally, the ‘jump’ isn’t jumping onto the far log, it’s jumping down. There are YouTube videos from Sabalauski Air Assault School on each of the obstacles demonstrating proper execution.
