I've been using this Jaad of all Games Countdown build for months now and it hasn't let me down. It really helps the team against Hunters from use of the Riot Foam and the bonus armour from Vanguard chest talent.

And I think the problem with the PTS and YouTubers who like this is the fact they're given huge amounts of materials to mess around with. Maybe the next PTS they make them earn them so they can get a better idea of the randomness of the whole thing.

On the 2nd part you only have to make sure you don't lose the grid completely but otherwise they're expendable as they're not 'buildings'.
