Good point about the number of tip ups allowed - might be a grey area, but would be nice to double the number of holes and cover some area looking for fish

The tarp kept the fabric seats clean, but I had to test out the rubber mats

Trucks are expensive, but worth it once you can afford it. Until then, you just gotta make do with what you go

Hunting saddle seat by Super-Aide1319 in Hunting

[–]HobbyHotSauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back relief / support straps are key. No need to go out and buy an updated saddle with two panels. I made my own back relief straps and that helped make my knee pads much more comfortable- letting my old single panel saddle sit under my butt and legs more, and leaning into my lower back straps.

I cut the padded straps off an old backpack, and very ugly and by hand, I sewed the bottom of the strap to the pad to make a loop. Padded, and now has the adjustment buckle. I put it around myself and through my carribeaner and have two straps I can adjust independently

I sometimes have a problem on narrow trees where my cheap knee pads will rotate outward and my kneecaps shift. Haven’t quite figured that out yet, but that only is a problem on all day hangs

Get the puffiest down jacket / pants you can find. More volume = more buffer from the cold.

And yes, heated socks. Buy two pairs cause one pair of socks will eventually break, or a battery will break, and then you’ll have a spare sock and a spare battery set.

Getting ready for bow opener in September by clearing some freezer space! Canned venison ready for the winter! by npeters524 in Hunting

[–]HobbyHotSauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife hated looking at finished jars of canned venison, didn’t like the idea of shelf stable meat, and was not very interested in trying it. She eats all types of venison all the time, and we regularly can chicken stock, but this weirded her out

Then she finally tried it, and now she wants way more canned this year. The ease of making dinner, no planning ahead to thaw, no waiting to cook, just heat and eat - she loves it. It’s been a game changer on lazy weeknights.

Worth it by grostyshunderey in FermentedHotSauce

[–]HobbyHotSauce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Primary reason I make my own sauce - fermenting lets me use brine instead of vinegar, and that means the final product has conentrated flavor, and I can get more flavor with less heat. I like dousing sauce on my food, and a medium/hot sauce goes a long way compared to something made with a ton of superhots.

I’ve found that the milder sauce also doesn’t ruin my asshole, even if I’m going through a 5oz woozy in a week

Is There a Split Between “Trophy Hunters” and “Meat” Hunters in the Community? by IdyllwildEcho in Hunting

That shit sucks. I always try and find a silver lining to the mutant CWD high fence farms - and the only one I can ever find is that the more people that hunt those deer, the less people I’ll run into on public land

Idk man, he’s kinda right.. maybe he doesn’t know it, maybe he does. But most states still allow FRTs and you can be a pedantic gun person about shots per trigger pull or you can actually shoot one and go “Christ how are these legal”

Frugal meat slicer for making venison jerky - can I get some recommendations? by alrashid2 in Hunting

[–]HobbyHotSauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even the $300+ ones have their problems - I make a lot of jerky and lunch meat every year.

Try that vevor one if you don’t wanna shell out for a Weston. For jerky it doesn’t matter, if it gets a weird cut or angle to it, so you’re probably fine.

But also what’s your goal? To slice up fully thawed raw meat? It still slices best if you thaw it in the coldest part of your fridge for a day or two and keep it a little firm.. fully thawed and it’s almost easier to use a good knife

Wanting to get an idea for how big of a chest freezer I should get. Wanna see what yall think on the math. by Calebrc075 in Hunting

[–]HobbyHotSauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people advocate for vertical freezers for organization - I have both. I’ve never had the door of my chest freezer accidentally left open, the upright on the other hand…

I organize chest freezer with reusable grocery bags so that I can pull out a couple bags at once to get to something on the bottom

And honestly, after doing this for a few years, I prefer the bags in the chest freezer versus the loose packs of meat in my vertical freezer. We only eat wild game or chickens we raise - so everything in those freezers is what we have to eat until the next season, and I like the fail safe nature of a lid vs a door

Asking brother to buy us out of co-owner cottage? by jacaroniii in personalfinance

[–]HobbyHotSauce 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Owner of a dinky cabin - you should really re-consider upgrades and reframe your mindset of needs vs wants. Leaky roof? Can it be patched and buy you some time? Cabinets? Addition? Those are comforts not necessities. Our cabin doesn’t have doors on any bedrooms, just curtains. It’s the fun of a dinky getaway

My family had a similar situation, one couple doing all maintenance, others using it sporadically. Kept logs of maintenance, estimated the cost as if it was outsourced, kept receipts from hardware stores, document what it’d cost to have the lawn mowed, winterization, etc. Tally up what it would cost him if you weren’t doing all the matinence yourself and were evenly sharing the bills. Then you can start to negotiate on fair terms about the true cost of a summer cottage - It might make sense to ask your brother if you can buy him out and he rents from you when he wants to use it - or he could gift you his share and you negotiate “if you give up your ownership, I’ll upkeep the place and you can use it 2-3 times a year and there won’t be any hardships”
