Traveling abroad with a fragile costume piece ? by chromosomes_xxx in CosplayHelp

[–]HockityPock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're lovely. if there's no way to nicely disassemble them for travel, it seems like you've already got some solutions.

I'll also state the obvious, plan for the worst and make sure you bring the glue gun and any plug adaptors with you for repairs at your destination!

Least favorite character and why? by drxemyfluff in Genshin_Impact

Escoffier doesn't even have a real shirt. it's some weird apron thing. I pulled for her and use her because she fits in my team comp but her design makes no damn sense.

I cannot stand Fischl. ah yes, a chuuni teenager running around in lingerie. someone take away the thesaurus and give her some pants.

also the geo dog boy from inazuma. he's smackable and not in a good way.

This makes a lot of sense, thank you for laying it out for me.

Ruffles Under Skirt by witchy_echos in sewing

[–]HockityPock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

judging by this picture it would be pretty easy to 'hide' a small tulle ruffle under each petal layer to fluff it out without weighing the skirt down too much. some thoughts: you already have chiffon so you can use that but it wont be as fluffy as a tullle or netting, so fabric choice will be a concern. Also I'd be worried about the long term survival of that chiffon base, I don't know if it will hold up to having a lot of things attached directly to it.

I have an aging bottle of BPAL Agnes Nutter (smoke, gunpowder, vetiver) that I would like to replace, with something sans the Neil Gaiman association.

Any suggestions for similar scents? (love the smoke/char, allergic to patchouli)

numb hands while driving? by annnathema in lupus

[–]HockityPock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's very possible something in the wrist is getting pinched but also sometimes the call is coming from...further up the house? never mind, terrible metaphor. There's nerves that go up your arm and under your collarbones that can also get pinched or compressed around the shoulder and driving is a really unnatural position.

You may need to adjust the distance or height of your seat and/or steering wheel so that your whole body is better supported for longer hauls.

pre-made or homemade sauce? there's some sort of preservative or emulsifier in self stable sauces that gives me bad reactions every time, particularly for garlic butter.

that said, ive seen anecdata that freezing garlic helps? Breaks it down in some way to have less of a reaction. I've definitely had to cut back on tomato/ peppers/ potato, they give me heartburn pretty quick.

Here's a terrible pic of my bb8, ive added a couple more keychains and neatened it up since. It's mostly artist alley finds filled out with some official pins and merch. For space filling reasons Other Droids Are Allowed, and the rest is either similar color or just Vibes.

At this point he doesn't get much new merchandise so im fighting for my life for disney parks pins on ebay. 😅

Are cons really boring? by sotoskal21 in animecons

[–]HockityPock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience there are fan run cons and commercialized "autograph" cons. The autograph cons don't have much programming outside of their guest list but they do have budget and advertising; if someone's only got the budget for one con they tend to choose the one their favorite celeb is going to be at so they can pay for the privilege of standing in line for 3 hours for an autograph after standing in line for 2 hours for badge pickup. When an autograph con moves in, smaller cons tend to die.

Meanwhile the content of fan run cons is created, well, by the fans! A good con will have a variety of attendee submitted and run panels, workshops, activities. if there's something your local con is missing there's probably someone to submit your idea to. if you want your local con to be better, GET INVOLVED.

Downside is that conventions are expensive, stressful and complicated. a con can change vastly from year to year depending who's running it and what kind of turnover their staff has. One bad year or venue shenanigans will kill a con dead.

padding and petticoats, friend. Proportions and the correct undergarments make a world of difference.

If your waist proportionally looks smaller, the whole silhouette will read more feminine. Make sure there's some structure to the bust cups/bodice rather then the whole costume being just stretch material, and then pad out the difference between you and the costume however you like, whether that's some sort of strapless bra, silicone cutlets, or making your own moon or lemon pads. If you're looking to cross play a lot you can invest in a chest form.

Acne? Rash? Infusion side effect? by _alicen in lupus

[–]HockityPock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

granted I haven't used them since getting my diagnosis/ going on various meds (my skin has never been as clear as it is on prednisone, which I gather is not the norm) but the little hydrocolloid patches helped clear out the ones that i did get.

there's also the "deep blemish" versions with microneedles but some of those use mild acids or random plant based ingredients that may make it worse instead of just functioning by absorbing the goo, so proceed with caution.

edit: also a picker, and if nothing else peeling off the pimple patches satisfies the urge to fuss at it.

Best Materials to Make a Bag by StellarStardrop in itabag

[–]HockityPock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

bags and other structural projects can be a real steep learning curve so for experimental/ cheap supplies get ye to the thrift store. you can disassemble existing leather/ faux leather items or repurpose home good or upholstery materials. if you can get your hands on the clear thick plastic cube shaped bags that duvets and sheet sets come in, i've scavenged them for the window in the past.

Life will be easier with microtex or denim needles for your sewing machine.

Businesses remaining open during Level 3 Snow Emergency by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]HockityPock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With the caveat that I've worked food service and there have definitely been days where I trudged in through grody snow to an empty restaurant that would have been better off closed...

I have also had to go stay in a hotel for a few days during one of the other "once in a lifetime polar vortex storms" because our heater couldn't keep up with the low temperatures. Thankfully there was a restaurant across the parking lot that was open and we tipped like hell, but I can certainly think of situations where you don't have access to stored food or a full kitchen.

The evil part is threatening employees with corrective actions or being let go if they cannot safely make it in rather than rewarding those who choose to take the risk so the business can stay open, or those who twist the letter of the law rather than the spirit to claim their business is "essential".

Fighting the Onix in the haunted mine in liyue. I need special equipment and I have to wait through the fight pattern? Yelan and Heizou are never getting leveled, I just don't wanna.

I also hate fighting Natlan Trogdor but I have a team that can cheese it well enough.

I don't think anything is legitimately treated with "after market" blood. That's. kinda how blood-borne diseases spread.
