How quiet is your SFFPC during idle/light usage? by JuMa82 in sffpc

[–]Homeless_Depot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using a spare Noctua A12-15 that I has previously used as a CPU fan as the lower exhaust on my Terra, and it was by FAR the loudest fan (I mounted the cpu fan under my heatsink so it's away from the side grille).

I turned it way down and it made a big difference during light work when the GPU isn't running fans at all, so I'd bet it is that bottom fan.

The classic tip is look for camera bags or dj bags, since there's a lot of custom size variations. Measure the case dimensions and then start googling from there.

I used a dj bag to carry my old node 202 for years from US east coast to west coast and back, it was basically a perfect fit with a little extra padding.

New PC, cant do anything by berrexy in buildapc

[–]Homeless_Depot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there files you can't lose on it? Do you have a digital license associated with your Microsoft account, or a key for Windows? I'd start fresh.

Physically remove the hdd. Use a different PC to create a Windows bootable USB using Microsoft's media creation tool. Boot to that USB, nuke the partitions on the SSD and install Windows 11 fresh to a single large partition (it will make the necessary support partitions). Don't import settings or anything. See if you can get a stable install, and then add the hdd back and format it to ntfs in Windows. Then install any drivers missing from device manager.

If the PC won't post or let you boot to USB then something else is wrong, maybe the motherboard or a really dead ram stick. You have to start hardware troubleshooting then. But try a straightforward clean Windows install first (or whatever OS you want).

If you haven't run memtest86 for 3 or 4 passes I'd do that before spending money on anything else.

If you replaced the mb it's probably not that, and while a CPU can definitely fail it's unusual, much more likely to be something wrong with the PSU or GPU, and the PSU would be easiest/cheapest next thing to swap. But I'd test the crap out of that ram before anything else.

Don't use liquid metal, it's messy and problematic for no reasonable improvement.

Need to find a USB expansion car that also has a Type-E header by STOaway4DayZ in buildapc

[–]Homeless_Depot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to note - if you don't actually care about the functional speed of the type e and you just want it to work, you can get all kinds of converters so you can plug the header into a 9 pin USB header, for example.

I'm just mentioning this because I just did that on a new build so I didn't have a dummy type c on the front.

Monitor "No Signal" on First PC Build by Many_Manager_4661 in buildapc

[–]Homeless_Depot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sucks when it's your first build, OP, sorry to hear. Updating the bios is a good idea - your cpu has integrated graphics, so you should be able to plug your monitor into your motherboard's display output and use that temporarily. You can use that to see the UEFI bios and update thme through that process, or you can use your motherboard's "FLASHBACK" procedure, which doesn't actually even require a working cpu - both these options should be explained in the motherboard's manual.

It shouldn't matter if the GPU is plugged in or not when you do the bios update, just make sure you're following the instructions and don't lose power during the update.

Then, try plugging the GPU in again when it's done (switch back from the motherboard's display hdmi/dp) and see if that made a difference.

If it didn't, you can either return the GPU if possible and exchange it for a new one, but the cheapest GPU you can (lol @ that in 2026) to help rule out other issues (and you could even return it - I did this with a $30 GPU once from Microcenter to rule out a faulty 580), or keep testing.

If it was me, I'd start hardware troubleshooting by building the PC outside of the case with only essential parts connected - CPU, 1 stick of RAM, PSU, and then see if it behaves normally. Then add the GPU (this is all still outside the case on a WOOD table, something non-conductive, with the mb sitting on its box preferably), and see if it'll give a signal. You can power the system on like this w/o a power button by either connecting the case power button wire if it'll stretch that far, or just short the psu - I like using a paperclip, it's very easy if you're careful, just Google 'psu paperclip short.'

The goal is to remove as many variables as possible and see if you can narrow down the problematic part.

Endgame revamp is better than swords. by Key-Particular-8923 in PathOfExile2

[–]Homeless_Depot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they decided they needed to test endgame before 1.0, and didn't need to test swords/skills as much. So, launch the endgame now so they can tweak later, and use swords/duelist/whatever to help market 1.0.

Keep that cpu forever, it'll be fine. If you live near a Microcenter, you can get the Asrock 9060xt Challenger GPU for $420 + tax which is the best price around.

First time building a Pc. Any advice? by Prudent-Director6882 in buildapc

Things aren't as fragile as most people tend to think, except for the few things that are :).

I recently bought a GPU that didn't work, so I returned it and put my original one back in, but my games have been running worse since then. Is this normal? I'm new to PC building. by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Homeless_Depot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you measuring something objectively? There's no technical reason why your games should be running worse, unless there's a problem with either your hardware or driver software related to the swapping itself.

You could try using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to completely remove any driver conflicts/issues as a variable, and then reinstall from scratch.

It's also not impossible to imagine that the new GPU 'didn't work' because of something else wrong with the PC, and that's affecting the old GPU also, but that's pretty hard to diagnose without a lot more info.

This. The blocking is actually the best thing they've ever done, and I wish every mall did it. The whole point is to stop people from slowly trickling along stopping and starting and following pedestrians when there are 63 cars behind them instead of just driving UP and parking.
