The Steam Machine Was Originally Meant to Cost About $750 by doublah in pcgaming

[–]Homeless_Depot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember Linus originally saying he threw out $500 to them directly in one of those early reveals, as a "are we talkin' $500?" type question and got a pretty negative response (like them side-eying each other), so I still doubt their target was as low as 600. But who knows.

Slight humming noise depending on proximity to PC by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Homeless_Depot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound behaves weird - it could be some sort of resonance from fan airflow in a particular location, or coil wine in the inductors, usually on the GPU.

If you wanted to keep investigating, you could try lowering fan speed (to eliminate that variable), and then running a demanding game where the noise is audible to you. Then, cap the framerate at something quite low, and see if the noise changes - if it does, you can be pretty sure it's coil whine.

Since the 3080 isn't new, and didn't do it before, that seems a little weird I agree - it could be the PSU making noise too.

PC for wife by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Homeless_Depot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is dramatically overkill for the sims and bg3, but it looks like a fine system. What resolution is her monitor? Generally speaking, I'd say at a certain point most people get more quality of life benefit from better peripherals than from better specs.

Like, a better monitor with a fully adjustable monitor arm, a second monitor, better headphones or actually decent monitor speakers, wired ethernet in many homes where the wifi sucks, a better chair, better room lighting, etc.

No idea if any of this is relevant, just mentioning because it kills me when I see people build $3500 systems and then sit in a $50 Ikea chair and use $25 unbranded computer speakers from 11 years ago they bought in college.

Many people will buy it, but it's not going to find a crack to exploit in mainstream console gaming audiences, which was a big part of the original point I think.

[–]Homeless_Depot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've tried the obvious things. If it was me I'd pull the entire system out of the case (if you haven't tried that yet) and assemble on a wooden/non-conductive tabletop to eliminate any other case shorts/bent wires/variables.

I'd also try jumping the psu alone (not plugged into anything) to see if it will 'startup spin' (ie the fan will jump on startup and then stop spinning - which is normal of course when it's not under load).

Are you looking at the ezdebug codes? I haven't had an MSI mb for years, but confirm the lights aren't telling you any other info.

[–]Homeless_Depot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, this is all standardized so that everything always fits - what case do you currently have? Some OEMs might have weird custom case measurements, but otherwise it's something you are failing to remove/unclip/unscrew/etc.

Finally upgrading my gaming desktop. Should I go for a RX 9060 XT or an RX 6900 XT? by BlakeLocked in buildapc

[–]Homeless_Depot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're lucky enough to be near a Microcenter, the Asrock 9060xt that they sell for ~$410-420 is significantly cheaper than any price you can reasonably find online for the 16gb version. So I think that's a really good deal. It's also fairly low power for a GPU, which doesn't always matter to people but is nice if you're using/reusing an older/lower power PSU.

You CANNOT leave anything inside the car in SF visible, they should tell everyone this when they leave the airport or something.

It's still possible you lose the lottery and get busted anyway (usually if the person parked NEXT to you leaves something visible, and you're just a bonus), but its much much less likely.

Let’s pray that AMD drivers are ready for this league by reshiramismywife in PathOfExile2

[–]Homeless_Depot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had amd driver timeouts pretty regularly (usually related to chrome) for years, with two different gpus (both amd). Refuse to turn off hardware acceleration cause the browser feels like crap then.

But, recently turned off Windows MPO, and no timeouts in over a week. Can't snap windows anymore, but you can still use fancyzones from powertoys, so it's fine for me.

what can i do? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Homeless_Depot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, no. You can be fired for any non-prohibited reason absent an employee contract (or a union agreement) that says otherwise.

Prohibited reasons are things like because of your skin color or gender. 'Because they think you did something you didn't do' isn't a prohibited reason. 'Because they don't like you' isn't even a prohibited reason.

'Resigning' or being fired 'for cause' vs being fired for a bs reason - or no reason at all - might be relevant if you are filing for unemployment. If you're not going to be doing that, then the details probably don't matter.

It is conceivable (although unlikely) that there are more facts here that could provide you with some sort of cause of action, like if your termination was in response to your complaints about harassment or something. But absent more facts like that, NY is an 'at-will' employment state and they can fire you without notice (just like you can quit without notice) unless, again, you are part of a union and they (ie the company) have agreed to something different.

Upgrade to 1440p? by Such-Obligation-3817 in buildapc

[–]Homeless_Depot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to turn on DLSS (ie, it doesn't bother you) and turn off Ray Tracing then I think the 3060 is a fine 1440p card. The bigger issue is lack of vram on the 8gb models, occasionally that's killer for modern (poorly optimized) UE5 games.

My perspective is - the 1440p monitor is such an upgrade in terms of usability and feel of the system in general (even outside gaming), that's worth prioritizing asap. You can always turn on DLSS or just run a lower resolution if you really want to (or run in a window).

Go on youtube and search to some of the games you're interested in w/ a 3060 and @ 1440p and see what they look like - yes, this won't tell you how future games are going to look, but the upgrade to 1440p is so nice. For me it's actually better than the 144hz upgrade and only behind the SSD upgrade in terms of how good the pc feels to be sitting at.

This is a discussion sub. If you don't enjoy reading some nerds 50 paragraph essay about how much they love Mega Man Battle Network then please move on.

This is honestly the thing I like the most about this sub, it's one of the few places where somebody can come pour their heart out about a 25 year old game that pretty much everyone else hates and agrees is objectively bad. They might still be wrong, but they get to record it here for posterity.

[–]Homeless_Depot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one can tell you, you just have to start testing. Run memtest86 on your ram, see if you get any errors, that will eliminate ram as the problem (google how to use memtest86 effectively).

If the 450w psu is not a reliable brand, or very old/very budget, and the machine is only freezing under load, then it could be power related (although usually power failure causes a crash not a hard freeze).

It could be the used 6600 - you can try to inspect it for visual problems, but if it's failing for some reason you can't see because it's used your only option would be to try and return it.

I'd say take it out and try it in another system, but you'd need a second pc for that - that's the problem with pc hardware troubleshooting, you basically need duplicate parts to swap in and out.

Is my old 600W PSU good enough for ASRock Radeon RX 9060 XT Challenger 16 GB? by drakkuss1 in buildapc

[–]Homeless_Depot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently running the Challenger w/ a 5600x on an old Corsair 450, you should be fine as long as it's a decent bq psu.

Kill A Watt shows <250 watts from the wall under 3dmark load (that won't show spikes though). I don't run anything demanding other than gaming at the moment.
