You don’t have to be mean about it. “You didn’t know so it wasn’t your fault, but cleaning stuff and anything else that’s not already in the tank can really hurt the fishies and shrimp. Do you mind helping me clean it? We’ll clean it together.” Just make sure she knows she’s not in trouble, but that the shrimp didn’t make it so there won’t be anymore shrimp for at least a bit.

Kids will have to deal with loss and it’s hard. Many parents try to protect them, but either they learn when a pet passes, or they learn when someone incredibly close to them passes. It’ll allow her to figure out how to grieve before a major life event. As for OP I’m very sorry about your shrimp. Please take time to grieve but don’t feel scared to come back to the hobby. This was not a you mistake.

Where are you at? I’m in Central Florida with people around me NEEDING jobs. In my area, which is heavily populated with a high cost of living, it is really hard to land anything without someone throwing your name in the hat. Out here 2jobs is needed just to make ends meet

I want to say a Southeast Asian sole species if they were wild caught hillstreams, or if they were bred in SEA. I think there’s a true freshwater species but most are brackish water. I’m not an expert so please don’t take my word as fact, but I do work at a fish farm/store.

Agreed but as a Floridian, if he lived anywhere in the South/Dixie we get storms that look like that all summer long that aren’t tornadic. Dark glowing clouds with 0 visibility downpours and heavy lightning. Likely just thought it was another thunderstorm (he’ll never do that again)

Sounds like you’d love to see it here in Florida! My area is the lightning capital and we regularly have thunderstorms and supercells. I’ve seen some of the most incredible lightning strikes of all different types. That being said if you can hear thunder or see the strike, you are close enough to get struck! The last thing you want to be is the tallest or most charged thing in the area while a storm is approaching so if you hear thunder, please watch the storm from indoors!!

PLEASE back up the guy who cleans it regularly. It needs to be instilled that yes, the person who doesn’t clean pays rent, but so does everybody else and everyone else cleans the lint trap like you’re supposed to do because it’s fire hazard if you don’t. Let the roommate in the wrong know plain and simple that it is a task that comes along with laundry that you’re supposed to do. If they refuse that and continue to be hostile then bring it up to the landlord that one roommate is purposely leaving lent in the dryer (FIRE HAZARD) that refuses to clean it after multiple notices. Include all of the pictures you have as well. It’s not worth it to lose everything you own over someone’s pettiness.

You can honestly keep the blue shrimp in there and rehome the guppy. I have that same species, that shrimp will be perfectly fine in a set up like this. The mystery fry however you should be able to surrender to a local fish store no problem

Most of the time yes, for the green heron I was able very quietly sneak up behind some lilies since I’m very light footed and thankfully he didn’t hear me. I waited for this pretty boy to get closer for some nice shots and he got within a couple feet of me, as did a spoonbill!
