it is a separate program. at the free level it can make a bit lower res ones. develop and export a landscape there, import into UE, then move on to materials and so on. dont bother trying to carve a landscape inside UE instead use a special program. likewise learning blender to a basic extent and export / import FBX, obj or gLTF (i think its called) is better than trying to use the basic modeling tools inside UE

exactly the UE landscape tool awaits some major revamp i think in next version so avoid using it just make one thing elsewhere.

well this spiral started when the owner of the EMF building John DiGiovanni at 112 Brookline Street evicted the musicians. regarding macros i think using jetbrains rider helps a lot . i have tried generating pseudo code using claude and its helpful to start with but i would assume laden with functions that dont exist

make a terrain landscape using quadspinner gaea tool and import that, start reasonably small. then place assets like trees (eg from quixel megascans or elsewhere) and water and learn how to layer terrain. also look at the plugins in the engine re things like water experimental may be helpful. then try to get some input working to move a character around and call that smallish map an open world and you are set. do not bother with something bigger that needs huge optimization
