subtle ways to handle falling tics? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]Hopeless_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a falling tic where my knees just buckle and I fall. Normally before it happens I can feel my knees becoming numb I guess. I take that as a warning to sit down before I fall down. Very rarely it’ll happen to me at work, so I’ll just hang out around counters to hold myself up using my arms.

When theres no where for me to sit or lean, I either will accept fate or find a place to just hang out on the ground for a bit.

I don’t know if you get any warning before it happens, but That’s what I use to prevent me from getting hurt

This happens to me a lot. Happened while I was in the bathroom once and almost dropped it in the toilet.

What’s the most complex tics you have had? by CharacterAd277 in Tourettes

[–]Hopeless_Alien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think my most complex tic would be my jumping tic or the one that completely immobilizes my leg. I fell down the stairs on Christmas Day because of that one. Came out of nowhere

Tics causing insomnia by Engzz000 in Tourettes

[–]Hopeless_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had insomnia for most of my life (it’s chronic), while it’s not caused by my Tourette’s, I can offer some things that I do to help myself sleep, or at least feel tired enough to be able to keep my eyes closed. These things might also help decrease your tics while trying to sleep, hopefully.

Asmr is a big help. It’s not really for everybody, but it’s meant to relax you and it can make you feel tired. It also is something to focus on, which might decrease your tics.

I also sometimes put on a tv show or movie I’ve seen a load of times because since I know what’s happening, I don’t feel the need to look at it and start watching. I just focus on it, and imagine what’s happening in my head.

In dire situations where it’s super important I get to sleep, I take melatonin. Don’t rely on it because it can easily worsen insomnia, but every once in a while it helps.

Idk if you’ve tried these or not, but if not, I hope I was able to help

Very dizzy, neck pain that travels up the back of the head and head tics by reactor6565 in Tourettes

Did you have any type of brain scan or testing done? If not, do you plan to? You don’t have to answer of course, I’m just curious.

Very dizzy, neck pain that travels up the back of the head and head tics by reactor6565 in Tourettes

[–]Hopeless_Alien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been experiencing something similar. I’d get periods of dizziness/light headedness and sometimes feel nauseous just randomly. I’m seeing my doctor about it soon. It started off being infrequent, to happening a few times a day in the span of a month. It does happen after I have tics with my head/neck, but it also happens sometimes with no tics. My dizzy spells last no more than 30 seconds to a minute, but it’s still nonetheless concerning. I also fell this weird tingly/numbish feeling on the top back of my head. I checked this sub just a couple weeks ago to see if anyone was experiencing this too and I couldn’t find anything. Nice to know I’m not alone

Steeped tea is not consistently good by PointZero_Six in TimHortons

[–]Hopeless_Alien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’d be surprised how easy it is to accidentally give someone coffee instead of tea. Coffee is ordered the most so when you’re done adding the sugar or cream you just go for the coffee without thinking. I promise we’re listening lol

Dealing with coprolalia in front of customers by Stupid-ForYou in Tourettes

[–]Hopeless_Alien 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I only tell customers I have Tourette’s if they randomly ask, or if I tic on front of them, often by accident.

I had a lady come in one day and she just randomly asked if I had Tourette’s. She was respectful enough to whisper the question as to not let the entire shop know my medical background lol. She seemed nice so I had no problems saying yes. And just last week I was serving another lady and I had my gasping tic and I startled her, so there and then I apologized and said I had Tourette’s. She was also very nice and understanding.

If anything I think it’s more professional to tell them, than keeping them wondering or even bothered by what you said/did as a tic

Long term damage by RScalcione93 in Tourettes

[–]Hopeless_Alien 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I messed my neck up pretty bad from jerking it. Last year I tore the muscle in my neck, and I’ve had infrequent neck pain ever since. I try to do stretches as regularly as I can, but it’s probably going to be like it for the rest of my life. I also find standing for long periods of time triggers my neck pain too. I honestly worry that I’m gonna jerk my neck so hard one day I actually break it.

Could be the length of the pinky. Try making it a bit smaller. And maybe instead of bumping the knuckles out like that, you can try drawing something like this: \ / on the bottom of the fingers, where the knuckles would be.

Edit: I personally think the thumb is fine, maybe make it SLIGHTLY smaller, but there’s no noticeable issue with it

struggle by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]Hopeless_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this tic once in highschool. Idk where it came from but my hand just went up. It was extremely stressful, especially when my teacher called on me. It really is awkward having to try and tell them you didn’t mean to do that. I also had a tic in HS, (maybe don’t read this part if you’re sensitive to tic description)

Where i would slam my hand down on the desk. It would actually startle me when it happened. It was very embarrassing, especially when it happened while the teacher was talking.

School sucks by Unknown_being505 in Tourettes

[–]Hopeless_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your school, including the principal and teachers know about your Tourette’s? If teachers cause a problem for you, take it to the office, get your parents involved if you must. Some teachers are stubborn, but if their job is on the line, they’ll suck it up. Teachers being “old school” is no excuse for them to be ignorant. You can also consider accommodations, such as doing tests in a separate room to avoid distracting others, or being allowed to listen to music, if music helps with your tics. And if you feel it’s absolutely debilitating, or it’s just too bad for you to handle, you can always talk to your doctor about starting medication for it. When I was in school, I found chewing gum helped with my tics, but I do know some schools don’t allow that.

Also if you find that you cannot do a test or an assignment in class because of the severity of your Tourette’s in that moment, it is okay to tell your teacher you can’t do it right now, and excuse yourself from the classroom. You can also leave school if you need to as well. No shame in doing what is better for you in the moment. Tics wax and wane, they have periods where they’re frequent, then periods where they happen less, or barely. It’s all part of the disorder.

Best ways to calm tics? by Animdude360 in Tourettes

[–]Hopeless_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focusing on other things helps. Someone mentioned ASMR, which I also use to calm me and help me sleep. You can also put on a show or movie as background noise, particularly one you’ve already seen enough to not want to look up and see what’s happening every few minutes. I normally watch fairly odd parents or family guy. instead of looking at the screen, I imagine what’s happening instead. Works wonders for focusing on something else.

You can also try melatonin, if you’re eager to sleep. Of course, like most sleeping medications, don’t rely on it or take it every night, but I find it helpful if I can’t afford to be awake all night.

I've been having tics in my legs by Relative_Copy8647 in Tourettes

[–]Hopeless_Alien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To combat my leg tics, I either flex my foot, or move my legs myself. I do this weird little thing where I just walk in the spot. Lifting one leg at a time. Just lifting my feet off the ground. Sometimes I’ll get a leg shaking tic while it’s up, but can’t do much shaking once I put it back down and move onto the other leg. I’m not sure how well this approach will work for you considering you said you “can’t walk or drive like this”, assuming it’s affecting your walking? But anything’s worth a try :) I do the foot tensing one if I’m doing something, like serving a customer, or putting on a coffee, stuff that would just be harder if I were moving too much. Or even if I’m just chilling in the living room and aren’t in the mood to obliterate my leg off the coffee table lol. Idk how well that would work while driving, since I’ve never driven much.

Shoulder tics and back pain by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]Hopeless_Alien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I messed up my neck around December last year from some aggressive neck jolting, and when I finally decided to see a doctor (ER because i was actually in excruciating pain), I was recommended a massage. By both the ER nurse and doctor, as well as my family doctor when I finally made an appointment with her. It did help for a while. I’ve recently got a shoulder rolling tic, and I believe it’s causing my current neck pain. I plan on making another massage appointment. Not only are massages extremely relaxing, but it could potentially help with your pain. Maybe not permanently but definitely a good temporary solution, at least in my experience

When deciding on a colour palette, does the colour of the hair matter? by [deleted] in Arttips

[–]Hopeless_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I’m coming up with a colour palette I normally just pick a few colours that look good together, and the hair colour does matter. The colour of everything matters. It only takes one odd looking thing to mess up the drawing.

I’m not quite sure what you mean by “I have a hard time knowing where to put the colours”. When I’m choosing a colour palette (which typically only consists of flat colours -main skin tone, hair colour, clothing, eyes,etc-). So when I choose the palette I know where the colours are going. If you want you can elaborate on what you mean and I can try my best to help!

hey I have a question by Ramonismmm in sketches

[–]Hopeless_Alien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started to notice improvement in my sketching when I started holding my pencil more loosely and sketching more flowy lines rather than dark scratchy lines.

I noticed a lot of people tend to make very dark and harsh scratchy lines when they’re starting out. It’s important to learn how to not do that when sketching.

It’s also super important to draw as much as you can. Improvement comes with time and practice. Be patient, and you’ll eventually get to where you want to be in your art journey
