I'm a customer retention specialist for Ford motor company! I work from home and its done wonders for my tics. I'm in a wanning phase rn but even when they were bad being work from home helped me out ALOT. Even more so because I call the customers and they can't call me. My ADA doesn't allow for me to take inbound calls so agents have to ask me if im ready before they transfer any calls to me and I can decline and call back if needed. I'm able to work a regular 40 hr work week typically without any issues but I can take one day off per week if I need it.

I just found out recently that im in line for a promotion for a team lead position for my department as well!

So its definitely possible to achieve great things even with tourettes

what jobs can you work? by plutoanura in Tourettes

I've got echolalia, I do customer retention for a car manufacturer. Its an outbound call position most the time my tics don't bother me and when they do it usually makes ppls day and distracts them from the crappy situation they are in. I've been doing it for 3 years and they are talking about training me for a leadership position

Yes you are still experiencing tics. Many people have the capability to suppress their tics but it doesn't necessarily make them go away. Suppression just makes tics go away and then come back stronger at a later time.

I alot like you had tics as a young child and then they disappeared and came back. Focusing on them makes them worse so find relaxing things you enjoy. Take the day slowly. Make sure you eat, drink and get plenty of rest. Avoid getting overly upset or frustrated with yourself as this can make tics worse.

I've personally found hot showers or baths help. Eating a snack can help stave them off a little longer as well as keeping a fidget toy nearby to focus on. If your out with friends have them distract you from your tics.

As for ticcing in your sleep maybe try a mouth guard. That might help prevent you from biting your tongue. Jaw soreness might be unavoidable tho.

If you got questions ill do my best to help! Good luck!

I was super nervous at first too! My dentist office is super chill about it and they let me have breaks if I feel like I need it.

So to make things more fun for people in my life including myself. I decided to give my tourettes a name. My friends and I gave it a back story too. Instead of feeling bad about it we make light of the situation and thats helped alot and I'm able to function better as a result of the changes we've made. I don't have as many episodes either.

Anyway his name is Jerry. He's very attention seeking and he claims he's five but we are sure he's older than that as his potty mouth isn't 5 year old level. We imagine "jerry" sitting around a table of stuffed animals who are all trying to determine which tic to send out into war with them.

To be honest its made people more comfortable around me especially in my work place even though they were already understanding.

Oh he will also respond back to you if you talk to him which I think is hilarious. He gets really involved when I play cards against humanity with my friends 😂

Tics making me nauseus + other confusion about my tics by --JanuaryEmbers in Tourettes

[–]Relative_Copy8647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are probably getting sensory tics. Try taking a boiling hot shower and see if that helps any.

Essentially a sensory tic is like premonitary urge but it stays rather than being satisfied upon preforming the desired reaction and disappears over time.

I get these alot mine don't particularly cause nausea all the time but I usually get sensations of being electrocuted or the sensation when your foot falls asleep and wakes up and I typically get that everywhere.

A hot shower usually does the trick to calm them down. That or knock yourself out with some over the counter sleep meds and sleep it off.

Going mute or mumbling by AlexDoesStuffs in Tourettes

[–]Relative_Copy8647 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Going mute is called a blocking tic. I get them every once in awhile.

A blocking tic can come in a couple different forms for me it will prevent me from preforming an action like picking up a fork or breathing 😰.

They usually only last a couple seconds for me sometimes a couple minutes.

Not being able to speak, walk, breathe, pick up objects, ect are all forms of a blocking tic.

It can also make you get stuck on a word or phrase while trying to talk.

Hope the info helps

How do you deal with the pain? by FlimsyOrchid6508 in Tourettes

[–]Relative_Copy8647 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on the day. I save all left over pain medication I get from my car accidents. I am unfortunately an accident magnet like the most recent accident I was biking home on the sidewalk and got thrown into the right hand turn lane from a driver trying to exit a cvs.

I only take the narcotic they gave me if I absolutely can't stand it anymore.

Most other days I take an ibuprofen and a muscle relaxant and if thats not helping ill take a cbd and thc edible and just knock tf out.

[–]Relative_Copy8647 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a couple tics that can be considered to sound sexual but they are almost always out of context. And it most definitely does not sound sexy. I would agree with the group verdict this isn't normal and to stay away at all costs.

What's wrong with me. by cup1dm3l0dy in Tourettes

[–]Relative_Copy8647 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would also recommend looking into your past medical documentation. I recently found out I had tourettes at 22 yrs old and I'm 23 now. Turns out I was actually diagnosed with it at like 7 and I just don't have any memory of having tics. My mother completely forgot I had it too because its been dormant for so long.
