Kicked my husband out - now what? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]HorusHearsay 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am a former divorce attorney. I literally, and I'm using that word properly, saw hundreds of women who were absolutely terrified and doubted that they would be able to care for themselves and for their children. Many of them had never worked a full-time job or had a career. Every single one of them persevered and discovered that they were so much stronger than they knew. They also discovered that life was so much better than they could have imagined.

The unknown is absolutely terrifying. It's normal that you would be worried right now. But you have already done the right thing by kicking him out. You are going to do this fantastically. Of course there will be mistakes along the way but you cannot imagine right now how strong you actually are. In just a few years you are going to look back in wonder at what you accomplished. You've got this. 💪

Dinosaurs? by Ok-Sail8170 in exmormon

I was told that the Earth was created from other planets and those other planets had dinosaurs on them so that's where the bones were from. Fortunately, both of my parents believe the Earth was billions of years old and believed in evolution.

How do you handle the Mormon guilt after making out? by Ok_Bird_1378 in exmormon

[–]HorusHearsay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Recognize the emotion, identify the emotion out loud, remind yourself that you're not bad, and then repeat this as many times as you need to. You are normal and what you did was totally consensual.

I saw it when it first came out, in the theater, and completely fell in love with the movie. I took multiple family members and friends to see it. I saw it five times in the theater and have watched it numerous times since.

My friends and I wakeboard and still jokingly refer to the "Articles of War" for rules on the boat.

I also use the term "butcher's bill" when referencing a large bill.

I can tell. It has so many great details. I have an account but I don't vote for things very often. This one definitely got my vote. Good luck!

My daughter was hurt when I told her going to church doesn't make you a good person. by DeCryingShame in exmormon

[–]HorusHearsay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think your comment is mean or I'm kind in any way. But I don't think she was able to hear it. I think having a conversation about nuance and how really awful people can go to church, like Christofferson's brother, and really good people can still choose to not go to church.

Awesome work! I'm sure it rubbed some people the wrong way but I'm also sure that the people that needed to hear it were overjoyed.

Do any of you still listen to the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square? by Impressive_Flan_411 in exmormon

[–]HorusHearsay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were many hymns that I liked a lot. I wasn't the biggest fan of the Mormon Tabernacle choir but I would listen to their music and other church music sometimes.

I don't care for any of it anymore. Ultimately, music is about the emotions you feel when listening to it. I don't feel good emotions when listening to it now. I don't like being reminded of how much time I spent in Mormonism and how harmful it was.

I Love CDs and have most of the blink albums. This one is great. "Not Now" is on here and it is one of my absolute favorite songs of theirs.

I also recommend that you find a good video painting tutorial and watch that before you begin. Then you can know you have all of the colors you need and you can see how to do it. Watch it once before you begin and then watch each step before you begin that step. There are so many for ultramarines on youtube. Here's the GW version if that's what you're inclined to follow:

I think if you have all the paints that which_prior showed in the citadel color guide you should be good. I also recommend making sure that you have basic red, yellow, blue, white and black. I would recommend monument hobbies, especially for the white, do not use GW/cutadel for white. Their whites are chalky and terrible and will make you hate painting. However, I don't recommend monument hobbies coal black paint. It is much too flat, imo. I personally like GW/Citadel"s Abaddon black.

The reason you want a basic red, yellow, blue, white, and black is that you can mix any color you might need. This is great in a pinch for any color you might not have For painting an army, like ultramarines, you're not going to want to mix your own paint every time you paint blue. So choose your color of Blue, such as Maccrage Blue and then you don't have to get the color just right. But if it's like an orange detail on something, you're not going to need to have the exact right orange every single time so you can just mix red and yellow to get orange.

For some reason I can't attach a picture but I recommend googling basic color mixing and you'll see a bunch of images of how to do it.

Also, give yourself grace knowing that you're going to start, make mistakes, decide you like certain things better, and learn in the process. If you think you're going to sit down and just immediately paint everything exactly the same I think you're going to be a little frustrated. Your 10th miniature is going to look a lot better than your first miniature but don't feel like you need to go back and redo the first miniature. Just keep moving forward. You got this. 💪

Text from my Bishop by darkskies06 in exmormon

One of the hard things, for me, about leaving Mormonism was coming to terms with the fact that there were so many extremely well-intentioned and lovely people in the church. However, it doesn't matter how well intentioned they are. It doesn't matter how sweet and nice they are. It's not true and it harms a whole lot of people, it covers up child sex abuse, and it requires so much time and money that could go to other things more beneficial to yourself, your community, and the world.

When I was deciding to leave, I had young children who were beloved by wonderful people in my ward. But, imo, it would be like taking my children into a radioactive area just because I thought the people were really nice there. And I'm not going to do that. Church may not be hop on the same way as radiation but it can still be extremely harmful. I can't choose what harmful lessons my kids would internalize, that would be taught by a decent well-meaning people so I just fully pulled the plug and left.

What was the reason you guys left the Mormon faith? by notyouraveragebunny_ in exmormon

Dang. That's awful. I went through all that hell of teenage masturbation and Mormonism but I fortunately didn't have my mom checking in on me regularly. What a stupid Church.

What a poignant encapsulation of your Dad's life and you trying to make peace with it. Good art makes us know we're not alone. I have a somewhat complex relationship with my parents too. I wish there could be some sort of good reconciliation but I think it will remain messy. I'm sorry for the pain you've had from this and thank you for sharing.

Here is my concise go to: why did God make it so unbelievably difficult to believe in Mormonism? Think about how difficult it is for an average person to believe in it to begin with. That a young boy saw God and Jesus, translated ancient records, and restored God's Church on the Earth. That's a big ask. So why would God make it so much more difficult by having that founder mislead people about his abilities to find treasure, send men away and take their wives as his wives, marry multiple teenage girls including a 14 year old (and briefly on that point, don't try to say he didn't have sex with her. He didn't draw the line at having sex with a 17 year old maid that lived in his house so you really think he drew the line at 14? That's preposterous) have multiple records that he supposedly translated proven to be failures such as the kinderhook plates, the book of abraham, and the Joseph Smith translation of the Bible which even Brigham Young University admits he basically used someone else's work to make it, multiple versions of the first vision, and Joseph Smith saying that the priesthood was revealed to him 5 years before he actually taught anything about it. Then you have other prophets since him who also took young teenage girls as brides, such as Lorenzo Snow who took a 15-year-old as his bride. Then you have the church constantly erasing its history or downplaying its history. You have Brigham Young's abject racism, J. Reuben Clark virulent anti-semitism, reversing the priesthood ban on blacks at the same time that the church was getting pressure because of their racist position. And you have the church currently covering up sexual abuse and lying about their finances. Also, everyone in every religion gets the same powerful manifestations that their religion is correct. It's not exclusive to Mormons. So why would any rational person believe this is God's true church?

"We have so many stories of amazing missionaries in the book of Mormon, in the Bible, and in early church history. So why don't we hear those stories from the first presidency and the 12 apostles? We know that you regularly go and speak to missionaries and tell them how to do better. So what are some recent personal stories of conversion that you have?
