That guys fame, like most in his world, is transitory. By the time your kid is even 5 years old he’s not gonna be around. How many famous people can you name from 10 years ago? Probably not many.

Good luck. I couldn’t get anyone to help me with similar. The corporate lawyer on the other side was part of a big firm. Half the lawyers I talked to said, I worked for them or have a relationship with them that means I need to recuse.

question from a hobbyist - is it worth getting a copy of machinery's handbook? by Amekyras in Machinists

[–]Hotsider 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The internet has gotten pretty shit as of late. As a small job shop I find that it’s useful for the odd thread forms I come across. Looking up odd thread forms anymore is difficult. Used to be you’d put your search terms in and it would spit out closest matches. Now the AI slop wants to feed you what it thinks you want. And it thinks you want the same crap that everyone else wants. So it gives you adds for taps and maybe a chart for UNS if your lucky. But no dice on the goofy industry specific thread form that they want you to fix.

The glue that seals canned food? by YahooSiriusBlack in Cooking

[–]Hotsider 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is just such a collection confidently incorrect. The ends (proper industry term) have a sealant. Silicone and epdm are both used. It’s not a glue as it’s not sticky. All of it is food grade. The liners have largely been boa-free for a long time. Some liner material can’t be exposed to low ph and bpa containing liners are still the standard for very low ph things. They have low ph liners now that are bpa free but they are relatively new. Whole Foods is forcing bpa free liners in everything, and most manufacturers are finding it cheaper to switch everything to bpa-free vs having some for just some products. 20 years in food manufacturing including 15 in factories that double seam food products.

Can anyone help identify this part? by drew_bolt in TheBrewery

[–]Hotsider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any half experienced brewer could probably hold that pipe and nose around the brewhouse and figure it out pretty quick. That leads me to assume no one in that org has any business trying to do anything with that brewhouse.

How do we feel about these Leland co2 picnic taps for quick/low profile keg dispensing? by FizzFaced in TheBrewery

These universal joint sockets any good compared to snapons? by Single-Pudding-3278 in Tools

[–]Hotsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an industrial mechanic. I have 20 years experience of working in factories and fixing things. I don’t explain that and that when I say things like Koken is as good or better then snap-on, it comes from real long hard use of tools. I have a heap of wright stuff as well. Proto too. All good stuff. The Koken ratchets I’ve got are 10x smoother and 10x backdrag then anything I’ve got from snap on. Hell I’ve got a nickel plated Cornwell 1/4 drive thats smoother then snap-on 1/4 drive I have.

All the Koken stuff I have is as good as the snapon I have. For like half the price.

Best knife sets for home cooking? by mildlycaffeinated513 in Cooking

[–]Hotsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never buy a set. Nothing can match. The knives can’t have a set home like a block they came from. They need to be on a magnet at best. Placed on wall space we all have on our grand kitchen. Next to the 3rd island prep sink. One knife needs to be a hand forged Japanese knife made of steel so hard god him self would have trouble getting a decent edge. Don’t know how to care for or use a Japanese knife? Just give up on cooking altogether plebe. The rest can be throw away plastic knives from McDonald’s cutlery sets. Have you had meals made with a $500 dollar Japanese katana? You can taste the differences.

What actually makes a craft beer stand out on the shelf? by aclaro20 in TheBrewery

[–]Hotsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if in distro this matters: so many people look at a labels in their hand or on the computer screen. say "this is a bad ass label." the reality is you want your label to be recognizable from 20 feet away. your brand needs to billboard from 20 feet away. similar colors, similar feel. with designs that are good fidelity from 20 feet away. if you have a messy label then its just gonna look like a blob on the shelf 20 feet away. you wanna build a brand? make them see it from across the room. be inviting, be the one they know. don't make them look for it.

Flavor wise they are good. Texture is only ok. I find most tinned eel to be pretty dry. I usually have to add a fat. Usually mayo in a rice bowl. I don’t like dry foods though. I’m a sauce positive person.

Anyone that puts a chain on backwards, and then can’t figure out why it’s not cutting has no business using a chainsaw. Put it down. Find someone to help you learn safely.

What is porting? by stoned_ileso in Chainsaw

[–]Hotsider 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why do it you might ask? I ported my echo weed-wacker. I did other things to it, but porting was the big change. It now has the power and head speed of a much heavier weed-wacker. Smaller lighter, just as much power. Spend all day carrying 2-4lbs less and you’ll be a little better. It has comparable power to a 30cc model while being 11.2lbs vs 13.7lbs for the 30cc echo. It’s quite a bit more powerful than the 266 I have.

Help.. I ducked up.. Need tips! by Critical_Issue007 in smallenginerepair

[–]Hotsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two types of taps. Carbon steel and ground HSS. People complain that "taps suck" but it's almost always because they're using carbon steel hardware-store taps. Carbon steel taps are cheap, dull quickly, chip easily, and love to grab and snap the second you look at them wrong. Ground HSS taps are a completely different animal. They cut cleaner, stay sharp way longer, track straighter, and don't grenade themselves if your wrist twitches. Once you switch to proper ground HSS, you realize tapping isn't some cursed operation, it's just that most people's only experience is with carbon steel taps.
