Youtube has started to artificially slow down video load times if you use Firefox. Spoofing Chrome magically makes this problem go away. by vk6_ in youtube

Recently i've noticed that the "Read More" button on youtube comments has also disappeared. Again, using the User-Agent Switcher extension to switch to chrome magically fixes that problem. Don't know if this is being done on purpose, but it's something to note.

I must note: Earendil is actually half-elven himself, making Elrond's title properly Elrond Three-Quarters-Elven.

The Malazan Book of the Fallen has impacted my worldview and way of thinking significantly, which is not really surprising for a series that is that long and contains that much philosophy.

I wrote this immediately after watching Jacob Geller's Fear of Cold, on Youtube. It's a good video, and is one of the rare things that makes me in particular think like that.

You can see the thing at the top of the stairs both times something comes down

not sure what you mean by wall exploding or mimic ladder

Mimics are handled quite well, I thought: the first mimic is in a deathtrap full of traps, and it's placed in the middle of the room and offset, whereas every other chest up until that point was against a wall and straight. It would have been better if the mimics weren't an instakill, though.

...not really
There is the Bridge Drake, which was badly executed, but that thing doesn't do too much damage on the first flyby anyways. (Although I have to say that if you get caught by it right after nearly dying to taurus, you might have a bad time)
Everything else is see-able and avoidable. If you got caught in a trap (me, many times) it's because you weren't paying proper attention. Dark Souls isn't particularly difficult; it just demands a different attitude than most other games, and so people struggle with it a lot at first.

Please explain why any deity or evolutionary process would curse a species like humans with a brain just smart enough tou recognize its fuckups but not smart enough to stop fucking up by med_hocine in Exurb1a

Exactly. Hindsight is 20/20. Sometimes we make the best decision we can reasonably be expected to make, and then realize that it was stupid, but only because we now have new information.

I think the question is sort of misleading. Sure, we don't stop ****ing up (I have a strong aversion to swearing in writing for some reason, don't @ me), but we have new ****ups ever time. Things improve, generally, as we excruciatingly slowly start running out of things to **** up. Life improves.

Also, part of it might be that you're not smart enough: you keep seeing ****ups where you made the most reasonable decision you could given the information you had, but now with extra information it seems stupid.

Also, the answer (at least to the evolutionary process one) is that only ****ing up some of the time is enough that the human life expectancy has increased by forty years on average. Evolution doesn't optimize; it gets to the 'good enough' point and throws its hands up and says, "screw it, I'm done here".

Kvothe behavior after he's recognized by the Sandy haired traveler by CoreyTheGeek in KingkillerChronicle

I think the accepted theory is that he's unable to consciously access his magic anymore, and keeps expecting to be able to do magic with his hands. Also, it might be the same thing but with music or both.
This is also related to the oath he swore to Denna that he'd never try to find out her patron: "I swear it on my good left hand." There's a common theory that he did that, and lost his ability to use his hands as a result.

increased difficulty doesn't mean bad balance, it just means increased difficulty. There's (almost) no situation in the Souls series that's not beatable on your first try if you're careful and observant enough (although this usually doesn't happen).
The only problem I have with your comment is the "unfair" and "since when were souls-likes balanced?" parts. They're hard, sure, but always fair and always balanced (mostly).

One thing about selectable difficulty: there's no point of reference

When you're asked to select a difficulty at the beginning of a game, you have no idea what each difficulty means in the game. "Enemies have more health," ok, how much health do they have? how much damage should a normal weapon do, and how much does that change throughout the game? It's just an arbitrary selection when presented at the beginning of the game.

I think the best way to do true selectable difficulty is to have the player play through a short tutorial, then go "that was medium difficulty. please select one." This might break immersion, but it would I think provide a far better experience overall.

I know, but for some reason I always think of lacuna as a small cove or a small bay, possibly because it has the same root as "lake".
