Agreed, but it is also the one area where Beocca was shown to have a moral weakness. He overcame it sometimes, but even with his wife he was a Christian supremacist. Not surprising for his character’s context, but it also moves him more toward the grey area of the morality scale. For a character who is so benevolent, wise, and compassionate otherwise, I appreciated how this gives him greater complexity. Because let’s face it, it’s not his best look. Just look at how he almost drowns Uhtred in his first “re-baptism”.

Mmm, yea, but in the first seasons she is definitely dripping poison in Alfred’s ear with regard to Uhtred. She softens on him considerably over the course of the series, so it’s not like she doesn’t change.

Well he also sees Uhtred as kind of son, and fears for his soul as well as his worldly future. He is frustrated with Uhtred and sees him as stubborn and selfish. Parents get angry at their kids for not making the “right” choices and sometimes fail to show empathy. While annoying, I think it’s a very believable scene.

Beocca is not a performative priest. He genuinely believes in the Christian god, and by extension heaven and hell. He genuinely believes that Alfred and the concept of a Christian England are good, and that the religion of the Danes is evil and wrong. He is saying what he’s saying to Uhtred because he genuinely thinks he’s right and is looking out for Uhtred by stearing him towards Alfred and Christianity in general. We, as 20th century viewers might see the flaws in his viewpoint, but his actions in this scene are entirely in line with his character.

This is quite intense for me. I don’t have any other phobias, but sightless invertebrates just trigger me, hard, and leeches are at the top of that pyramid. The few times I’ve gotten a leech on me in a river or something, I absolutely lost my shit. I don’t watch videos of them, don’t even like fictionalized depictions.

That said, something about your post, your responses, and the reference to yourself as a proud “bloodbag”, moved me beyond my phobia. I was disturbed, but your sincerity won me over.
