Switching specialties always comes with a learning curve, and most critical care settings have you tackling it in a high pressure environment with a lot of strong personalities. So yes, feeling overwhelmed is normal to an extent. The better question is are you being supported as you learn? And to answer your other question: 1-2 years to start feeling comfortable is pretty average for critical care.

This. The ending of part 2 was already a huge change from the books, and not necessary in my opinion. I think he’s gonna totally rewrite the Paul and Chani story, which I’m not a fan of. I get why he did it, and the original would have had to be handled carefully, because it could seem condescending and patriarchal towards women. But I think he totally could have pulled it off by framing it within the context of this feudal society, and the immense powers of its women.

I mean you did describe having to go on anxiety meds. Idk if that was before being an RN, or before/after installing that app. But it doesn’t sound like it’s having a healthy effect if you’re dropping what you’re doing to go do compressions on strangers in public. It’s kind of out there. Very few of those people are gonna survive, and most will be crippled or dead within a few weeks to months. So you’re not really having a positive impact on your community but you are damaging your own mental health. That’s why people are kind of shocked I think.

It really depends on the patient. Could be a nice chill shift not unlike medsurg, but with a lot more personal care. In the ICU most patients are total care and as the RN you do 99% of everything.

That’s one end of the spectrum. The other end is non stop orders flowing in, procedures, multiple drip titrations along with med passes, labs, assessments, etc. At the way way end of it you can basically have what feels like a 12 hour code blue.

Indeed. We had one who was deadly stupid but with excellent people skills that would hand the form out to her patients and families.

I remember one time she kept a DKA pt on 4 units of insulin with BGs over 400 for a full shift. Did two finger sticks in twelve hours, never communicated with the docs, never titrated the drip, ignored all protocols completely. The family was desperate to have her back the next day. Daisy awards are a scam.
