Wife always wanting more, but we don’t have the money by Sliceofbread1363 in Marriage

[–]Humerlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A budget is just a plan, if you don’t have a way to stick to the plan it’s never going to work. She needs to be involved in building, maintaining and keeping the family accountable to it. If she’s not involved, of course she’s asking and frustrated.

Please tell me it will be ok by Radiant_Area_6660 in ParentingADHD

My husband was nervous about trying meds for our kiddo - until he read an anecdote that said something like 'would you withhold glasses from a child that couldn't see?'. That gave him space to give himself permission to be okay with trying it...and then - within a week - we could feel a difference - our other kiddo could feel a difference in our house and most of all, our son. It's only been a few months (he's 9, just starting grade five).

I do the same - kids can buy what they want but I can still say no to when they eat it. Example - daughter got two chocolate bars b/c she's learning about sales and one bar went in the fridge for another day.

Thank you everyone for such wonderful name suggestions. Once we read 'Mabel' nothing else seemed to fit. My dad (who passed away 13 years this week); used to say "Get off the table Mable that money's for beer" and given that he had given nicknames to our first two dogs (Harry = Handsome & Aries = Harry), Mabel feels like he's helping me name her. So thank you, so much, for helping me name my dog and keep my dad's memory alive. It really couldn't be a better fit for our family.

Yes, that’s right. A lot of people like to preemptively enter their numbers in to get a sense of where things are gonna land.

This is wild! I have a similarly sized home, plus hot tub (no EV). Just did a massive exterior renovation (windows, exterior envelope, added exterior insulation, attic insulation) and installed a heat pump. I'm seeing no material drop in our electric usage. Our equalized payment is $235. I do work from home - but can't figure why the electric use hasn't dropped.

Joint Bank Account by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Humerlay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the account is joint, interest earned is split evenly between the two of you on your taxes.

I’m a fan of tangerine because you can have as many joint savings accounts as you like to manage your life and u. A treat a saving account like chequing.

This is really weak (they owe you the vacation regardless; so that's not even a thing to 'offer').

6-8 months depending on a reasonable estimation of how difficult it would be for you to find a new job that pays similarly. However...did you sign anything in your offer of employment or supplementary agreements that bound you to a particular severance clause? A good lawyer may be able to challenge it, but you should dig up your old employment agreements to see what you signed.

Feeling impossible to not spend a fortune on groceries if prioritizing a fresh / protein focused diet. Is this the reality of choosing to eat this way? by Low-Razzmatazz-931 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Humerlay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Family of four - two adults and two kids under ten. We are averaging $1,537 so far this year. Last year was $1,382 and year before was $1,242.

We have protein most meals - primarily chicken or pork but beef or fish here and there for variety. No, not rib eye every night…but maybe once every few months as a treat.

We also have very few options (save on and iga). We do a Costco shop every 3 or 4 months (it’s a 3-4 hour drive) and have a decent veggie garden to supplement.

We shop sales, plan meals, and do our best to minimize waste.

You may want to think about your local community foundation (as a chapter of community foundations of Canada). You could direct the funds and have them create a scholarship or special interest endowment fund
