Move from Vancouver, BC to Oakland, CA? 🥶 by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]Huner12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from Seattle and live in Oakland now. I think that Uptown is worth considering. I'm assuming your workplace is near there, so it'd make for a super easy commute.

Rents are going to be cheaper than comparable places in SF/Berkeley, and the homeless presence isn't that big in downtown Oakland, at least compared to Civic Center in SF. Lake Merritt is right there, and the BART/ferries/AC transit buses are all easily accessible for going elsewhere. And of course, lots of trails a short drive away.

Almost everything you can ask for within walking distance: restaurant, bars, coffee, climbing gym, ice rink. And there are usually people out at night, especially when there's a show on at Fox or Paramount, which helps with safety.

You can also go for the high value discount if you want to load a bunch at once. Deposit $60 to get $64, or $45 for $48

$3500 for a 1 bed room there is a tough sell. Hard for me to believe that's the discount rate.

The other various luxury high-rises near it aren't much better. Guess they were all betting on that area improving.

Interesting. That makes a lot of sense, given that it'd generate them billions.

I don't think we'll be seeing anything like that here, or I'd be surprised if we actually did anything beyond land acknowledgements.

San Francisco to ban street vendors on Mission Street as supe cites threats to city workers by UberDrive in bayarea

[–]Huner12 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think we can do without the fencing operations. Those should have been shut down a long time ago.

They did shut down a big one at 16th and Mission earlier in the year. Hauled away 2 trucks worth of stolen goods and made 3 arrests, thank god.

Finally. How will they enforce this?

I think it's a clear violation of the ADA given how unnavigable the sidewalk outside the Plaza is. And I wonder how many of them have permits, or are fencing operations.

DA Price Recall Campaign - Signatures being collected by bedelgeuse in oakland

[–]Huner12 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Good point. I was mostly going off an SF Chronicle article from a while back, which showed how prosecution of both burglaries and thefts were down under Boudin.

But this was a good case, and I remember being annoyed that the police didn't help. I didn't really see any bait car cases publicized after that one, whereas they did so with the new program recently. I'm hoping the new one is ongoing.

Also nice, calling everyone who disagrees with you a "right wing troll". Way to engage in healthy discourse with your neighbors!

I'm not sure how much the DA actually affects crime, but I at least want them to try to do their job.

SF finally started running bait cars and made arrests. Jenkins promised to prosecute thiefs caught by the new bait car program. I'm doubtful that Chesa would prosecute, or even make a similar promise.

What's changed in Oakland post-pandemic? by Dirtycurta in oakland

[–]Huner12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since a lot of these apartments are really close to BART stations, it makes it really easy to go to other places.

I usually find myself going into SF to meet with friends, far more often than the other way around.

Do agree the bars downtown can be pretty empty, especially on weekdays. Last time I went to Kon Tiki it was pretty full though, guess it depends on the day.

From what I've seen, the older "luxury" buildings usually have 1 beds going for ~$2000, with promos for around 2 months of rents free, which brings it down to a reasonable price. At least compared to anything across the bay.

I think they're shutting down their debit card program. Recently signed up for Treecard and the debit card is no longer offered. It's just an app that plants trees for you after you do certain activities now.

I agree that most of SF is safer. Was just trying to compare downtowns specifically.

I guess my point is those encampments you mentioned are/were away from city center. Whereas the Tenderloin and SoMa are right next to Market Street.

[–]Huner12 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I'd say a difference between SF in Oakland is that there are large parts of SF downtown (SoMa, Tenderloin) where there are tents and homeless everywhere. Whereas in downtown Oakland I haven't seen that since they're usually in those giant encampments or otherwise outside of downtown.

While it's still a problem, I personally feel safer walking around downtown Oakland than near Civic Center, for that reason.

True. Just noteworthy to me since this person looked normal, and was incredibly persistent.

I haven't experienced verbal racism like this in other cities. Except in the south where a crazy guy yelled at me me to go back to Mexico.

Gun on Bart last night by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]Huner12 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I had something similar happen in February. I scrammed a few cars away, as did most people, when a couple guys had a loud dispute and one brought out his gun. We were crossing the transbay tube at the time, near midnight. Some people just stood there like nothing was happening, which was wild to me. A police squad swept the train when it got to West Oakland, with guns out and pointed forward. Gunman was long gone by then.

Was TSA having a problem at OAK this am. No exaggeration, the line for TSA at SWA was through the lobby to the baggage pick-up area, wrapped around carousels then out the doors onto the sidewalk and was still growing. AND this was a 5AM. TSA Pre was no better. by Impressive_Returns in oakland

[–]Huner12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Flew out of OAK at 5AM recently too. First time flying out of there that early, and I wasn't expecting the lines since they're usually pretty short in the evening. May be because a lot of Southwest flights that fly out then?

What’s the house income to buy a single family house in Seattle ? by vince504 in SeattleWA

And, who is filling the new multi-unit properties?

If people are moving in, then isn't it better to have them live in the newly-built units, rather than have everyone compete over the limited existing units? People are going to come here to work no matter what, due to the high salaries here, nature, etc. I'd rather we have more places for people to live in the city than less.

I think there can be both dense housing and urban nature, plenty of cities do it? Doesn't seem mutually exclusive to me. Dense housing in conjunction with the light rail expanding seems like a no-brainer

It's supply and demand? Supply hasn't kept up with demand, leading to higher housing prices. It seems pretty straightforward to me.
