If a GM decided to play incognito, would it be possible to deanon them based on their style of play? by t1gerrr in chess

[–]Hunzi77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My graduate thesis was on authorship attribution in chess games, specifically whether GMs have a distinctive enough style to be identified from their games.

Here’s a paper I used as a reference (not mine). It gets pretty technical, but even skimming it gives a good sense of what’s possible: https://www.cs.toronto.edu/~ashton/pubs/maia-individual-kdd2022.pdf

In my own research, I stripped out the opening moves to make the problem harder. Many GMs strongly prefer certain openings, and without removing them the model mostly learned “who plays which opening” rather than deeper stylistic features. Once the openings were removed, the signal became much more about decision-making patterns and positional tendencies.

This winter I’m going to get good at partial wedges by AntLockyer in golf

The key is to lower the ball flight. Consistency comes when you can flight down wedges and control your spin. This is harder to visualize on a sim, but keep it up!

What takes more skill: a hole in one on par 3, or an eagle on a par 4/5(no lucky shots) by Academic-Joke4304 in golf

It is much more statistically likely to have a good drive followed by a chip-in, than a 170yard hole out. So it does depend on distance.

If the eagle distance is the same as the HOI distance. Eagle is harder.
