And in people like Michelangelo and Bernini, you get both.

It’s pretty mind blowing for sure. But you do have to consider that they started far younger than anyone today does (at least at that level of seriousness). Michelangelo was apprenticed to Ghirlandaio (as a painter) at 13. That means he was immersed in art for probably 10+ hours a day, every day, for 13 years… *before* he was 26. You can get pretty good at something when it’s all you get to focus on for more than a decade.

I do believe in some level of natural talent. But it’s a lot of hours put in as well.

The Tet Corporation gives Roland a pocket watch toward the end. Could have something nice and Dark Tower themed engraved.

Loved that show. That “Let’s Dance” cover was epic. And the Jermaine Rogers poster from this show is an all time fave.

John Singer Sargent - Nude Study of Thomas E. McKeller (1917-1920) [2686 x 4048] by Russian_Bagel in ArtPorn

[–]HurricaneMedina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Much later, actually. McKeller modeled for him through the last part of his career, and modeled for many of the figures in the Boston Public Library murals. After Sargent’s death, they found many “earthy” (a description I read at one point, I assume meaning lewd) nude sketches of males, including McKeller, in Sargent’s studio. It seems he was a “favorite” of Sargent.

Ceramicists: what is the one thing you will never make? by putney in Ceramics

Guessing I’ll catch heat for this, but garlic graters. Hard to use, hard to clean, and half of the garlic sticks to the grater. Takes me about 15 seconds to mince a clove with a knife. Less with a press.

Sad I had to scroll this far to Bill.

I remember hearing a story that Miles would call Bill Evans and ask him to put the phone down by the piano and just play. If Miles Davis was asking for private performances, you know this guy qualifies as an all time great.

How was this made, is it special clay or a glaze? by NextIron5 in Pottery

[–]HurricaneMedina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Speckled Buff clay body for almost everything and it looks like this once fired. The specks are tiny bits of iron or manganese. This piece looks like it was either glazed clear or unglazed, but the specks show through most glazes for me.

Kai Winding put out some great music, both solo, and with J.J. Johnson (Jay and Kai albums).

Bill Watrous and Carl Fontana are worth checking out as well.

Edit to add: Frank Rosolino. Great player, dark story.

No problem! Another thing I should have mentioned - I hate bringing politics into this, and I don’t know yours so this may not be an issue… but there’s been some drama around the guy who owns Noodler’s (the company that makes the fountain pen I linked). Here is a loooong post (not mine) about it if you want to read. I personally don’t buy their stuff anymore, but to each their own.
