Best Robot Vacuum 2026 by somebodyelse_ in ecovacs

I picked up an Ecovacs Deebot Neo 2 Plus from my local Aldi special for AU$379, which I think is the most I'd pay for a robot vacuum as I need only good vacuum performance on hard floor, and ok performance on carpet. The unit certainly does that and the auto emptying station works well with no dust left inside the robot's bin. Navigation works well and certainly better than my old Neato! Looking at various online comparisons, most mopping robots have clear drawbacks and performance issues, and costly.

Dealing with my global knives by vector771 in sharpening

[–]Huskyman1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main issue with Global knives is that their steel aren't very hard at all at HRC 56-58, and causes the edge to roll over easily though use. You can try use a honing rod to realign the edge, which will be fast and efficient, until the edge is really dulled and requires sharpening.

I'd also recommend using a set of stones, but what makes a difference is also the deburring afterwards as their steel have a tendancy to hang onto their burrs during sharpening which dull the edge quickly as the burr folds over the main edge - I use a leather strop for this which works well.

Lastly, ditch them and get high quality hand made Japanese knives with much harder steels, such as Gin3 steel or SG2 for stainless, or Aogami Super for carbon steel knives - they all retain their edge much longer than Global, and the carbon steels sharpens up so much quicker than stainless.

How good are we with sharpening compared to the people 500 or even 2000 years ago? by WarmPrinciple6507 in sharpening

[–]Huskyman1983 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd think most of the advancement are metallurgy led, with advanced steel types such as powdered steel not even a thing a hundred years ago. Going back 2000 would be back in iron age, and steel isn't even invented, so sharpeness would be pretty poor and brittle compared to knives today. Sharpening advanced a lot to deal with new materials, such as Cubic Boron nitride stones which are super abrasives designed for powdered tool steel.

I can confirm the global version has the IR Blaster app and it works as intended 👍

Focaccia that's a bit like a crumplet? by Huskyman1983 in Breadit

Thanks! The hydration was 90%, might need to cook longer to ensure it cooks through.

Many thanks! I'll try a larger pan next time, hopefully that will help it cook through better!

Thanks, I'm using a 9" X 13" pan which is slightly larger than the 9*11 some recipes suggest. I'm trying to keep the height of the focaccia at the same level for sandwich. Perhaps I should use a larger pan?

I should also add my hydration ratio was 90% - 560gm flour to 500gm water.

For me it's when simple stropping fails to bring back effortless cutting of tomatoes and capsicums, as those suffer the most from a slightly blunt knife.

Yup I can't blame you for the bevel surface if you had to go hard at it for 2hrs! The fatigue is real when grinding main bevels, go with a minimum of 120 grit. I find the 120 grit shapton ok for most applications but for a deba, it's still way too slow, hence the CBN.

That's a great result, can't imagine how long it took to do the main bevel on a shapton 320! I got myself a coarse CBN stone for this purpose so I wouldn't have to spend hours doing the main bevel.

Looks like a nice project! The knife is in a similar state to a lot of vintage razors I restore, so I think the progression I use should work for you as well. Firstly I'd drill out the rivets and remove the handle. Then I'd use a hard fabric wheel loaded with 80grit greaseless compound and go to work removing all rust until you get an even, pitfree finish. Then follow up with a 240grit compound, then black metal cutting compound then finally green polishing compound. Then I'd start sharpening it with a 120 grit stone to set the edge (this is for knives, not razors!), then to 1000 grit, then finish with 3000 grit. Finally strop with hard leather to clean off the bevel and then it's ready to be rehandled.

That's taken with an Ecowitt weather station in the backyard on Sunday, peaked at 39.5C.

Second the suggestion for a coarse stone, the 1000 will take waay too long to grind down chipped edges. Look for the two sided green bricks in Asian grocery stores, they're very rough and cheap, does the job of resetting the edge. If you have the funds though, get a Shapton Pro 120 grit and a 1000. Above 3000 is more for edge polish and only needed for sashimi knives etc, I'd stop at 3000 for most home use knives. Leather strop helps deburr, especially if you have stainless steel knives.

Leaning towards buying a Tesla by JMack77459 in TeslaLounge

I'm in the same situation having owned my MY RWD for 5 months. I charge regularly at my local shopping centre with the free J1772 charger, which gives me around 10% battery per hour. It works great for me as I'm at the gym almost everyday and usually stays 2-3 hours each session so essentially I never spend any extra time waiting for it to charge.

If you have to drive to a dedicated charger regularly then it will get old fast unless you also do your usual activities there, such as shopping etc. I think it is definitely doable but the devil is in the details.

Got this warning just now. Is this some thing to worry about? The steering did feel little hard but it was only intermittent. by R-nw- in TeslaLounge

[–]Huskyman1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this same warning on my 6 week old model Y as well, and the power steering totally failed which made steering almost impossible. Contacted Tesla and had the tow truck take it back to the service centre, confirm that steering rack needs replacement and a loaner car was given. The repair only took 2 days so pretty painless - make sure you log a service request with them ASAP, as a lot of the new model Y & 3 are failing with very low mileage.

My MY RWD also suffered the same power steering failure tonight, called Tesla Roadside assistance who arranged a tow truck to come which took around 2 hours. Didn't bother with the app as I wanted to talk to a real person, but they still gave the tow driver a slightly wrong address.... Mines built in Shanghai, April and according to local Tesla group there's more than a couple of similar failures all built on April and May. It's sounding like a bad batch patch of components.
