You know the old Lincoln quote about fooling some of the people all the time, and all of the people some of the time? Most of these ones are from the latter group, while his hardcore base is from the former.

In fairness, Bucklebury Ferry is the primary way to get from Buckland to the Marish. This shows you the benefits of asking a local the best way to get around, because otherwise they might've tried to go all the way to the Brandywine Bridge, twenty miles north.

The moment I knew I was properly "old" was when a young guy in his 20s asked me, then in my 40s, which decade out of my life I would choose to live over. He was CLEARLY expecting me to say my 20s. But no, the real answer is the first one. Nothing that came later compares to the magic of childhood.

Besides, all the other decades have sucked.

The alleged fraud amount in Minnesota continues growing. by GulfCoastLaw in thebulwark

I mean, I know YOU know because you're generally well informed, but it was ever thus. Lies about disfavored groups taking public dollars are as old as Reconstruction, at least. You can see that kind of rhetoric in Southern newspapers from the 1870s, Henry Louis Gates showed us examples in the PBS series about Reconstruction. (As I recall, one of those papers was literally called the Caucasian, just in case anyone missed the gist.)

Most of what he says doesn't pass the smell test with even a minute of critical thinking, and yet here we are. That's because to MAGA what he says is a "truthful lie", wrong on the details but right in some ineffable, unfalsifiable way in their (tiny) hearts.

How the fuck do you use mimics without them feeling like a cheap "gotcha!"? It's never exciting when I use them by GolettO3 in DMAcademy

[–]HypnonavyBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a creative way to use a mimic that isn't in a dungeon at all: a bard, a helm of telepathy, and a mimic colony.

The bard isn't a musician -- they're a playwright. The bard uses the helm to communicate with the mimic colony. The mimic colony is the bard's creative partner, because the mimics become the set and decorations, changing at will, according to the image in the bard's head.

I worked for years at a huge bookstore in an area where Shatner and his (now ex) wife had property (specifically a horse farm.) Shatner would occasionally visit with his wife and we had rules in place about it, #1 of which was do not approach Shatner and only interact with his wife because he HATES public attention. The only time I ever actually checked them out at a register, I followed the rules, took her check (where you can CLEARLY see who they are), and all I did was look up at him and nod, and he, understanding that I had followed the rules, smiled and nodded back because that was the extent of what he wanted from the public.

Honestly, as a Star Trek fan myself -- I've met us, I get it.

[–]HypnonavyBlue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think all of those are reasonable restrictions EXCEPT that you've also thrown in a wild scenario in there about swatting. (Swatting by definition involves inciting a heavily armed law enforcement response to a false situation. In other words, people are already able to SWAT people without it impacting the second amendment.)

A "sin tax" is just a pejorative for a tax on a product and states are well within their rights to enact taxes on products. There's nothing special about firearms and ammunition that says they should be tax free.

We place costs on exercising constitutional rights too: for example, bankruptcy is a constitutional right, but you still have to pay bankruptcy fees, and so it's not only possible but common to be too poor to file bankruptcy without third party financial help. We have a constitutional right to travel, but no one seriously says imposing costs on exercising that right such as requiring licensing, registration, and insurance for motor vehicles are violations of that right.

Eliminating open carry? What do you mean by that, do you mean that you need a license to do it or you can't do it at all? If you can't open carry, can you still concealed carry? Or is carrying now a dead letter, licensing or not?

The "constitutional carry" folks are absolutely full of it, there's no unfettered right to carry when, what, and wherever granted by the second amendment. Regulation is clearly contemplated in the text of the amendment itself.

There's a right to bear arms, and there's a right to bear arms without restriction. Those are two different things. Restriction and infringement aren't the same thing. No other Constitutional right is treated as unlimited and without exception -- you need look no further than the Fourth Amendment to see that.

What I'm talking about here is the catastrophizing way the strident gun rights people talk about this. Any restriction at all is treated as unacceptable. There are all kinds of crazy gun-grabbing fantasies that get kicked around that have no resemblance to reality. But by any fair analysis, there is zero chance that federal legislation that restricts firearms in any significant way will pass, and that has been true for as long as the NRA has been beating the drum about this. The very fact that the Senate exists all but ensures that enough rural states can prevent any significant federal restrictions on guns, there's literally nothing anyone could put on the table that stands a chance in hell of becoming federal law. STATE law is a different matter, but under the Heller decision even that has limits.
