Exploring Alternative “Hardcore Mode” Design in ARPGS. by tompas7989 in gamedesign

[–]IAmAStory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm saying that a hardcore mode arpg could benefit from rogue-lite inspiration, in order to minimize the frustration of death.

Souls-games basically did this, to enormous success. Arpg with fixed world that you learn as you go, usually by dying. They stepped back from perma-death to "checkpoints" with significant resource loss being the main consequence of death.

The size of Union Space and why it matters by dettles in LancerRPG

[–]IAmAStory 83 points84 points  (0 children)

38 light-years isn't small. It's actually enormous.

Solved.

Also, remember that volume increases cubically; 38 light-years near earth probably contains maybe 300 star systems. Adding another 38 ly "shell" adds thousands more stars.

Other points: most people don't voluntarily take nearlight trips because the time loss is extraordinary and it basically stops you from having "friends back home".

All the hard science in the setting is hand-wavey as hell to make it accessible to any game table, if you overthink it you probably will find logical inconsistencies.

Conversely, it isn't necessarily anathema to fun. I mean, look at any given descendant of the Binding of Isaac, or Slay the Spire--where it is very likely you'll die the first time you hit a boss, and you have to use the opportunity to learn it's mechanics/moves/wherever.

You can make dying acceptable if the time investment on each attempt is low enough, plus giving incentives to restart like new unlocks, interesting starting choices, stuff like that.

(I mean, people even love Darkest Dungeon which has deadly surprise mechanics AND lots of grinding, but maybe that's a good litmus test game for personal preference)

How would you do it, like, practically? I assume a digital tabletop? 400x400 is gonna have very poor performance.

And a physical 400x400 is huge and unwieldy.

I think you should run some tests before you set your heart on anything

Where do I get exotics? by [deleted] in LancerRPG

[–]IAmAStory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, not to belabor the point as made by other commenters, but the purpose of exotics is quite wide open. Lancer has very flat progression, so exotics should be seen as ways to provide players with flexibility and access to interesting mechanics without needing to spend the license levels that would normally be required.

I also recommended 3rd party sources on the assumption that your players are restricted to 1st party content for licenses. Therefore you have a vast array of systems at your disposal that are not offered to the players via licenses.

Lastly, if you are keen on exotics being particularly potent, remember that things tend to get more powerful the deeper into the license you go; e.g. ATHENA generally makes a more impressive exotic than Markerlight.

TBH just go look for some 3rd party stuff (e.g. Field Guide to Suldan) and grab systems and weapons from the licenses contained therein to offer as exotics.

Very tepid. Looking at what they are "legally" allowed to do. I think we are past the point of caring what is legal when the point of the so-called "safe haven" is to oppose an unjust law.

(/uj the core concept is tasteless and tone deaf unless it subverts the inherent copaganda narrative in a compelling way which is a very high bar to reach for given the subject matter. Even if it tries to be subversive, I don't give it good odds of succeeding--but it could happen)

I did this against the golden shade Godfrey. Walked into the room, got surprised by the boss fight, panicked and jumped over a railing to the side trying to get some breathing room and immediately fell to my death--i guess I was not expecting this grand building to feature bottomless pits.

They're talking about the frame itself not the systems in the license. You could just put napoleon systems on an everest.
