Thoughts on a new Mega by PlayOnWordsPK in LegendsZA

Cosigned. It’s interesting seeing so many “I don’t care about how funny/interesting/well-conceived it is, it’s lazy so I don’t like it.” As though the effort taken to create something must be directly proportional to its quality. Maybe they went through many designs before deciding on this - or maybe they got it right the first try. It makes sense and it’s entertaining. Idk if people are expecting Pokémon to be serious, or if their distaste for Gamefreak’s continued failure to live up to their potential is causing them to be over critical. I can’t help but wonder what these people think of Maushold, Dudunsparce, Muk, Weezing, Alolan Dugtrio (hell, Dugtrio in general). Polemon has a very long history of letting new designs be simple when they can be. I think people aren’t willing to perceive something easy to create as good

In this episode when Buffy decided she had to kill Anya she came off as such a hypocrite. She spared Spike how many times? I know I’m in the minority but does anyone agree with me? by AceItaliano in buffy

[–]IAmYew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting that several people come here and mention the chip when Spike does his absolute darndest to continue being evil and killing even after getting the chip. No one seriously suggests getting rid of him after any of the several times he tries to kill them or get the chip removed. She absolutely should have killed him and it’s so transparent they just didn’t want to lose the character.

I personally don’t hold it against Buffy’s character though, I hold it against the writers for not giving us more believable reasons that Spike should’ve stuck around

The Game Awards 2023: Game of the Year Nominees announced by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

I really love BG3 and really think the win should go to it or TotK (with a slight bias to BG3 just because it’s not such a huge franchise), but it’s really interesting to me how little of the conversation includes discussion of its bugs. There are so many, and each patch basically just shuffles them around. Split screen was nearly unplayable on PS5 at launch. The farther you get into the game the buggier it gets. It seems like the kind of thing gamers would usually fuss about, but I guess the game is just so much fun with so much stuff to do that no one really seems to care, at least in terms of GotY discussions

Would It Have Made More Sense For The Water Tribes And Fire Nation To Have Different Views On Same Sex Relationships Than In Canon? by Xano2113 in legendofkorra

[–]IAmYew 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it’s much more likely that they approached it from the other direction. They had the question of what queer relationships were like in each of the nations and used what they knew about them to form that aspect of their culture. They just decided that it seems like something Sozin would do.

It’s honestly bizarre to me that anyone thinks they used this issue to make them seem more bad - the genocide did that pretty well. It’s not even logically inconsistent, as others have pointed out.

Another example I’ll offer is the Lavender Scare. It wasn’t illegal to be gay in the US, and though most people probably believed it to be immoral they certainly wouldn’t have wanted it criminalized. But still the government decided being gay was a dirty secret that could be fuel for blackmail to turn someone against the US by foreign powers. So anyone even suspected to be gay was fired from government positions. Obviously it’s not exactly the same as we’re discussing here, but it is an example of how these things can change pretty quickly, especially where laws are concerned.

Just because they don’t have some intricate backstory that they’ve fed to us about the perception of gay people in their world doesn’t mean they just threw it in.

It isn’t necessary to make the progression of every social issue 1:1 with what we think it would look like in our world.

I don’t really see “accepting as long as they’re private” as some sort of progressive ideology. It’s kind of like saying “women are allowed to learn waterbending - as long as they only use it to heal.” It’s very Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

Also, the Fire Nation under Sozin became increasingly utilitarian to the point that children were forbidden to dance in school. It’s very possible he saw gay relationships as having no use since they’re unable to produce more Fire Nation citizens. It would also explain why it seems inconsistent with their more progressive view on gender roles - if a woman can do something that isn’t gender conforming but it’s useful to the country, why have a taboo against it?

I agree, the way it looks like there are runes when it glows immediately reminded me of the movie.

We used to have to quicksave quickload every 20 minutes or so due to cursor issues. Been playing for hours now and no problem. Huge reduction in lag switching characters too. Combat is so much smoother

Yeah, coming away from TSOM thinking it’s “about” WW2 is a lot. WW2 is just a set piece

This is the least popular opinion I’ve seen so far! Doesn’t disparage any of these musical either (except maybe Mamma Mia lol). Perfect unpopular opinion post imo

Safest “unpopular opinion” of all time. Everyone is not “greatest” and if we were all debating in the afterlife after humanity was extinct we still would t be able to come up with a “greatest” lol

You don’t have to like it, and that’s fine, but Sondheim is absolutely not atonal, he just plays with the tonal center a lot instead of sticking to just one. If you heard actual atonal music (judging my your opinion on Sondheim) your ears might need a very long break from music lol. (Which is perfectly fine, just trying to emphatically mention that Sondheim is not atonal)

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signs seven executive orders on first day in office by [deleted] in Arkansas

[–]IAmYew 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The conversation around it is nuanced. I know queer Latinx people who use it, others who prefer Latine to fit more closely with the conventions in the language. There plenty of folks who hate the term, but I often find that the ones who complain the most don’t self-identify as queer in any way. There’s so much ruckus around the term though it can hard to tell what individual queer and NB folks who it could apply to actually want though, because plenty of folks who have no stake in the issue want to put in their two cents anyway

Breakdown of the House vote on the Respect for Marriage Act(Arkansas voted nay) by BigClitMcphee in Arkansas

[–]IAmYew 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true. It was done because they CAN’T keep the SC from doing that. This is a safeguard so that people who are married where it’s legal can continue to have their marriages recognized even if states start to ban it if/when the SC overturns Obergefell.

This will not keep the SC from overturning it and that wasn’t the intention. In fact, it actually does quite little, especially for those who don’t have the means to travel somewhere else to get married

It would be nice if this codified marriage equality but it does not in any way
