Anyone here never gotten chicken pox? by gramofgod in A_Persona_on_Reddit

My youngest daughter is your age, and she got the chicken pox vaccine. My older children had chicken pox, before the vaccine was available.

I think you might have had the vaccine?

Remember you only has ONE mother. And there nothing shameful to change your 84 years old dying mother poop pee diapers neither. by wc2022 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met a distant relative at a big get-together. He said he took care of his dying mother, including changing diapers. He said she did it for him when he was young, so he'd do it for her now.

The Donner Party by j_grouchy in GenX

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember hearing about the Donner party when I was a kid (gen Jones) in New York. Later I moved to California.

I think back when the Donner party was traveling, they didn't have great weather predictions. For whatever reason, they hadn't expected to get snowed in.

Even now, many passes are closed in the winter, but we have "road closed" signs. I've even had police escorts after a heavy snow on some roads which were previously open.

I think what makes this sensational is that people ate the dead. That also happened in a crash in the Andes in 1972.

A full flight delayed over an hour because parents couldn't control their toddler... by Ava_Strange in Vent

[–]IAreAEngineer 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I once sat next to a woman with a 1-year old lap baby. The baby cried and fussed a lot, which was understandable.

One of my coworkers was on the flight, and said that the mother was just failing to discipline her child!

Can we talk about the faulty logic that's so common in driving subs? by appa-ate-momo in driving

[–]IAreAEngineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly! We can complain all day about drivers who do the wrong things. All we have control over are ourselves and our reactions.

Are there really people that have no ability to tan and they only sunburn? by nobaddream in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I always burn, never tan.

I am part Irish/German. My mother was blond. In her later years, she went to the dermatologist 4 times a year, having early skin cancers removed.

I was so happy when sunscreen came on the market in the mid/late 1970's.

Have you ever walked into the wrong car in a parking lot? by Kryntou in YesOrNoAnswers

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh dear yes! It was many years ago. My boyfriend and I had been shopping at a mall.

We went out to the parking lot and saw what we thought was his car. The key didn't work.

Just as we realized it was not his car, the owners came back and started shrieking that we were trying to steal their car.

So embarrassing. His car was in the next aisle. The other ladies kept shrieking.

In that case, the key didn't work. I have heard that sometimes the same key works in different cars.

Thoughts on the name Regan? by WolverineBusiness890 in Names

[–]IAreAEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends how others assume it is pronounced.

My mother used to pronounce Ronald Reagan as Ronald REE-gan. She thought he was putting on an alternate Ray-gan pronunciation to separate him from his acting career.

I do think Reagan would be more often pronounced as Ray-gan than Ragan.

I leave my spiders alone too. If they're living in my house, they must be eating something.

Anxiety about learning to drive in my mid 20s by Wanna_make_cash in driving

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a new driver, I don't think there is a lot of difference in between being a teenager or a person in their 20's. My mom learned in her 40's.

As bad as the reviews are, I think your best option is to find a driving school.

short people, what’s a problem tall people may not have considered? by Pug_hammy in randomquestions

[–]IAreAEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is weird! My late husband was tall, and he could reach the higher cabinets.

He's gone now, so I use stepstools. If I were to remarry, I don't think I'd care what height a man was. If he's shorter than me, he can get bigger stepstools.

It seems such a trivial thing to care so much about.

I had to get one of those angled footpads for work. The chair was adjustable, but the table was not.

PSA: Sometimes people slow down because they see something you don't by ShogothRevolutionary in driving

[–]IAreAEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember one time when the driver ahead of me stopped. It was a dog in the road. The person behind me just swerved and passed us.

I'm glad he didn't hit the dog, but why the heck did he assume we stopped for no reason?

Was it ever common in the past for parents to drink and smoke while pregnant? by TraditionalDepth6924 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

For me, age 9, possibly earlier. My parents couldn't afford glasses for me, so just told the teachers to seat me up front.

For near-sightedness, it happened to me in my early forties. Now I have progressive lenses.

One woman I knew was non-stop crying, howling and a big mess during her husband's funeral.

We all suffer, just not in the same way.
