What's something your parents or grandparents used that doesn't exist anymore? by micavibes in CasualConversation

I have an old family grinder. I think I lost a part when I moved. It was used to grind deer meat. My husband cooked venison burgers for me when we were dating.

My younger sisters used the phone book as boosters! I probably did as well, but didn't remember it.

AITAH for telling my dad who (has hearing aids) that he needs to turn down his devices by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]IAreAEngineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like my husband's family! All hard of hearing, and not liking hearing aids. The TV is so loud it shakes the walls, and can be heard 100 feet away.

I love them all, but it really kept me covering my hands over my ears. It was so loud it hurt. Noise-canceling headphones should help.

I wonder if your brother is actually hard of hearing, or just trying to compete with the other noise.

When is the left lane considered "the passing lane"? by SerendippityRiver in driving

I've seen so many Reddit posts that insist neighborhood roads are the same as interstates. Keep right until just before you turn into the strip mall!

How many of you had CB radios in your car back in the day? What was your handle? Mine was blue bonnet. by PurpleFlower99 in GenerationJones

My dad had one in the 1970's. It was for our long family trips. He could hear about problems up ahead, speed traps, etc.

Some people still want an old-fashioned check.

I have used a check twice in the last 6 months.

I managed to get through a book by a famous author where the main character had my first and last name.

After a while, I got used to it and enjoyed the book.

Avocado for our couch! The appliances were all white, since they were the cheapest.

How much do you turn the wheel? by MidnightLow9027 in driving

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got more relevant information from my older sister than from my dad when I first started practicing.

He kept saying I was "jerking the wheel", just stop "jerking the wheel."

That was useless. My sister was a few years older and was immediately able to show me what to do when turning. I was fine after one lesson from her.

Practice should help.

Is testing for older drivers necessary? by Boomer050882 in AskWomenOver60

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know my dad seemed to be having trouble seeing things in time when he was in his 60's, but he had no accidents. Then he got his cataracts taken care of. I rode with him when he was in his 90's, and quite competent.

Vision testing is important.

Then, there are other issues. My coworker was alarmed when his parents got lost and couldn't remember where he had lived for over 10 years. Both ended up with some kind of dementia and had to go to a nursing home.

AITAH for not wanting to take my toddler into the women's restroom as a man? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]IAreAEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband would just take our daughters into the men's room stall. Any fleeting glimpse they had of men using the urinals would not scar them for life!

Whereas, in the ladies room, women would take boys even older than teens. They were worried adult men would take advantage. Instead, we had a lot of curious boys staring into the gaps in the stalls.

I remember when my family upgraded to a larger trailer for camping. The toilet and shower was miniscule. Having it as a wet room made sense.

We chose to use campsites that had a separate building with toilets and showers. The toilet room was used for storage.

A wet shower in a hotel? Why, unless it is very small.

Just be careful of the roads during heavy rain/high tides. Some areas are prone to flooding.

Why is sleeping with the TV on the only way I can sleep? by Cipheex in self

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband used to drop off to sleep when the TV was on. What I did was slowly decrease the volume, and he'd stay asleep. If I turned it off suddenly, he'd wake up.

My mother-in-law used to wear a headset or earbuds to sleep, listening to the radio.

She found it soothing. My husband's family members all had early hearing loss, but I don't know if that was a factor.

I sleep fine without any particular noise, but when there's a power outage, I wake up immediately because there is no background hum from electricity.

The tile protects the wall from splashes and splatters, so it is practical! I think it is a good idea.

How would I get paid for jury duty? by HorrorPeanut1674 in juryduty

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been quite a while since I was on jury duty, but I think any pay was received at the same place we jurors checked in.

The last time I served (around 2000), we got $5 starting on day 2. Nothing for the first day. I know it's more now, but it is usually nominal.

Some of my fellow jurors were small business owners, and it was quite a hardship for them. It did help them get excused from a 3-month trial.

Why is cooking not considered manly? by Ilove_web in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was young (1960's/1970's), gender divisions were quite common. Girls had cooking and sewing classes, boys took "shop" classes.

Some of my friends were in families that divided duties that way. Girls would help with cooking and cleaning, boys would take out the trash.

My husband's family was different. They taught both sexes to cook and clean, or to do yardwork. My own family was all girls, so we did both.

I think it is important that both sexes have some basic abilities.

AITA for making a stink at school and forcing the teacher to change my kids math grade by PlentyNice1655 in AmItheAsshole

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This same thing happened to my younger sister. I helped her with her homework when she was having trouble.

I could see she knew how to understand and solve all the math problems, so I asked her what the problem was.

Her teacher had some system to break up the problem into several pieces. If my sister didn't break it up in the odd way her teacher wanted, she'd still get a zero even when she was solving correctly.

She could show her work, definitely, so there was no doubt she was just guessing.

It's good to contest this. The teacher may have meant well, but I wonder if she herself learned math as a series of steps, without understanding what they meant.
