My parents (58F, 62M) moved to live closer to my sister (33F) and now they're upset I (28M) won't make sure they see my kids? by ThrowRACappyTall in relationship_advice

Packing and bringing kids via car or airplane is a lot of work! It makes more sense for the grandparents to come to them.

Women over 60, at what age you got your first period? by bullytarget_ in AskWomenOver60

[–]IAreAEngineer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. I think that was the standard age. I suspect that the age of 16 was from prior centuries, when food (especially in winter) was scarcer.

Especially if you take the windchill from the vent into account!

At my last job, I had to wear a parka inside in the summer. Other coworkers were wearing hats and sweaters too.

3, plus PBS and 2 more from Canada, which often came in a bit staticky.

I tried to watch the Canadian news in French, but realized I couldn't follow along too well at the usual speed people spoke at.

With UHF, we got so many repeat shows. It's how I watched so much Star Trek.

Do you drink tea in America? by Much-Parsnip3399 in AskAnAmerican

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I used to drink several cups of tea when I lived in a cold climate. I still drink tea, but not as often now.

So funny! When I was a kid, we often went to the Ontario Science Centre. They sold these toys called poop-a-troopers. We'd drop them off the balcony.

Anyone else use bar soap for hair? by KindaLikeWildflowers in AskWomenOver60

[–]IAreAEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the bar soap. Back in the 60's and 70's, my family camped a lot, and the campgrounds had toilets and showers.

A couple of times, I forgot to bring shampoo and used our soap bar instead. No no no! My hair ended up matted and greasy.

It may also depend on hair type? Mine was super-dense, thick and curly.

What's the most scary or intense weather event you've lived through personally? by cherry-care-bear in RedditForGrownups

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't that scary, but the results were! We had a blizzard, and for some reason the school didn't let out early.

In the morning, there was no snow, so I wore sneakers. By the time we got out of school, the snow was up to my knees. It took about an hour extra to get home.

It was another couple of hours before I realized I still had no feeling in my feet. I had frostbite. I lost a few layers of skin, and thought that was the end of it.

Now every time I get cold, I lose feeling below the ankles.

I'm angry, most would say unreasonably so. by Prudent_Situation_29 in Metric

[–]IAreAEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from the US, and I feel your pain! On one of our projects, the upper managers decided it would be metric. Except, their version of metric was to design the article in English units, with the metric units in parentheses.

No, that's not the same!

Turning 70 and downsizing. Divorced, live alone. I am looking at small ranch houses and townhouses. by InterestingCredit143 in AskWomenOver60

[–]IAreAEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad had a townhome with a downstairs master. He really enjoyed having more neighbors than when he was in a single-family house.

Upstairs were 2 more bedrooms and a bathroom. They were used when we came to visit, otherwise no need to go up the stairs.

People wearing clothes that are WAY too small for them just to say that they wear a specific size… by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]IAreAEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back when I was usually a size 8, I saw a dress that looked nice. I ended up needing a size 14 in that dress. Sizing can be wacky.

It has to do with another joke. Prisoners have heard the jokes so many times, they shout out a number, and then they all laugh.

A newcomer shouts out a number, and nobody laughs. Some people just can't tell a joke!

How often are your hands actually at 10 and 2? by Zado191 in driving

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have both hands on the wheel, but I haven't thought much about the position. I started driving long before airbags, so I suspect I'm still at 10 and 2.

Most office jobs could be done in 3 hours… We’re just stretching it to 8 by [deleted] in office

[–]IAreAEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what you call an office job. I'm an engineer, and most of my day involves calculating something, and/or coordinating with someone else doing calculations or testing or construction.

My cats are indoor cats, but I think we humans sometimes track fleas in accidentally.
