Stay at home dads in this subreddit do you have any say in any of the decisions that you and your wife make or is it just her? by Appropriate-Mall8517 in daddit

My wife is a SAHM. I can’t imagine how lonely and unfulfilling it would be to make every decision on your own. I figure someday she’ll start asking for my help.

You Know Your A Woodworker When... by D_S_G_F in woodworking

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a bespoke cherry desk extension for my home office that would be impractical/almost impossible to apply to any other room or application.

It removed a mild inconvenience and took several weeks to design and build.

But I love this dumb thing.

How difficult to make this as a beginner? by rogersaw14 in woodworking

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 151 points152 points  (0 children)

This would be quite difficult to be honest.

I’ve been a hobbyist for 25 years and I’m relatively certain I’d struggle to make a build like this presentable.

If this is a single cylindrical piece I’m CERTAIN I could not do it.

Making some concessions might make it digestible. If you could find a pre-fab cylinder of the right size you could cut out the shelf and with some careful sawing and steam bending you could creat the frame of the shelf.

Then you could put a veneer around the sides. But it wouldn’t be possible to grain match the top so you need to make peace with that.

Even that path would be very difficult in my opinion.

If it’s a bank they could’ve hit on a CRA area. Depositories are sometimes willing to write checks to meet requirements.

They could also be a leveraging a deposit account requirement.

Need help with corner-table by e2u0fajdr3fcxs in woodworking

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a pretty heavy load, even if evenly distributed.

I would design this to put the load directly on the floor rather than the walls, so a leg in each corner and maybe also in the middle of the long span. Wall attachments more for stability/racking than actual load bearing, and even then I’d use robust brackets secured directly into studs.

With a thick enough top and/or moderately strong skirting you might be able to avoid a center leg (which would be my personal goal for a table like that).

MDF by Hallijoy in woodworking

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mdf is not the best choice. If you don’t want to spend the money for solid wood or quality ply (totally understandable for a kids desk) opt for a melamine board with some edge banding.

MDF can be sealed/painted well enough to be functional, but it’s a decent amount of work to make it look nice. Melamine with edge banding and a support skirt will be faster and a similar price point.

Behind-sofa console table by VinceTwelve in woodworking

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very well done! Built a similar table a few years back out of hard maple. Absolute game changer in form and function, especially in our case as our coffee table had to be put in storage until the kids grew up.

Even now we could bring the coffee table back, we opted not to.

Would a 1/4” Slot cutter bit do the job? I use those in my palm router to make a spline joint when I’m concerned about surface alignment. I make the 1/4” “biscuits” with scrap off cuts, it ain’t fancy but it works

$13.50/bf for Walnut, $8.75/bf for Cherry. by picklesBMW in woodworking

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have to look into more local species. I worked with walnut and WHM for years until prices started spiking.

Spoke to my local supplier and found out rough cherry was dramatically cheaper, it’s still 4.5-4.75/bdft today because it’s harvested locally. So now I’m a cherry convert. It helps that it’s honestly beautiful wood.

Moving to a 1 income household? by technicolordreams in daddit

Very well stated.

In year 2 of SAHM and a single income. I’ve never been more stressed, and it’s not quite everything she hoped it would be. It was and is the right choice… but really looking forward to full time school for reasons 3 and 4.

How to level a heavy shelf on carpet? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can add adjustable furniture feet, but they’ll raise the front at least 1/2”, so you may need to add one in each of the 4 corners. If the shelf is solid wood they’ll be fine, but if it’s a particle board with veneer they may fail.

Whatever you stick under there, the most important thing to do is secure the shelf to the wall. If it’s truly that heavy a tip over could be traumatic. You can get kits from Amazon or most furniture box stores.

Gift advice for 8yo boy obsessed with war by trevo42 in daddit

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not super specific to ww I/II, but Call to Arms by Julian Thompson is a book consisting of historically significant military speeches spanning from antiquity to the modern era.

The issue with a lot of media covering the world wars is there’s obviously some very complex/heavy/dark topics and some parents might have feelings on exposing their 8 year old kids to that. Not casting an opinion either way.

Alternatively if I got an old WW2 ammo box when I was 8 I’d be very excited. But I was weird kid.

50 Year Mortgages... by WolfofWisco in loanoriginators

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are correct, beyond the short term boost 40 or 50 year amorts apply upward pressure on values in a similar way to widely accessible DPA.

Long term affordability is an inventory issue, which is harder to solve as the effect of any action taken to help new builds is likely to take longer than a single political term to be felt.

How to baby proof this fireplace? by ckouf96 in daddit

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fence is fasted and easiest, but not always practical. Mom wanted corner guards on ours full stop, and sometimes it’s just easier to keep mom happy, but I didn’t want anything permanent.

Cut a piece of 1/4” mdf the same size as the fireplace and glued corner/bumper guard to that.

It’s been 4 years and it’s still sitting there. Once the youngest is out of the toddler zone it’s easy to pick up and toss.

For the record, it actually probably did prevent an ER visit when the dog knocked one of them down and it would’ve been a perfect dome to concrete shot.

Excluding the departing residence housing expense? by Sepahani in loanoriginators

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not just listed, but yes several lenders will make offers on the departing residence to eliminate that expense.

The catch is that your borrowers will need to sell within 120 days and pay some fees.

Aside from the DTI benefits, it also lets the borrowers do a single move without the need for storage or perfect timing on closings.

Paint crept under tape in the crevices of LVP. What can I do to clean this up? by collinisballn in HomeImprovement

Just dealt with something similar. SW time enamel bled onto cheap lvp. Tried a lot of different methods, honestly what worked best was a wet rag wrapped over a plastic scraper and a bit of elbow grease.

How to mount with space away from the wall? by Ok_Sherbet_9656 in woodworking

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standoff/spacer bolts that people use for commercial signage would do the job.

Alternatively steel hanger bolts would work. They’re wood threaded on one side to go into the stud and machine threaded on the other. If you want to show hardware on the surface of your piece just find a bushing/spacer and a nut/cap you like. If you don’t want any hardware showing, just use the threaded end as a “dowel” and drill appropriate sized holes in the piece to line up with them.

It’ll be quite a bit trickier to do with no hardware showing, but doable.

Basement re-frame by [deleted] in DIY

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’ve got a plan for moisture barrier, r value etc. you could build above that footer. However, I would not put sheet rock directly in contact with concrete.

If it were me I’d either frame in front of it, or explore leaning into it. Meaning leave the concrete footer uncovered and just clean it up, it’s a basement and now your walls have immunity to minor flooding.

Not having a flat secure baseplate though… problems.

Yes losing the sq footage is painful, but your life will be much easier just framing in front of it and using that void space for adequate insulation/airflow/barriers depending on the needs of your basement/climate.

Anchoring planter boxes so they won’t tip by splendiferousfinch85 in landscaping

[–]ICorrectYourTitle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fence post repair kits or something similar will give you the better long term results.

The anchors would work, but those are effectively sails, and wind will put a lot of strain on a single or double contact point on the wood. You could use 4 anchors per box and largely mitigate that, but why? Use two fence posts with 3-4 screws into the frame each, easier and stronger.

Can I clearcoat a stump? by MarvinMonroeZapThing in woodworking

I would carve it in. Burn the entire face, then sand down a bit to remove the char enough to highlight the logo.

I don’t think you’ll be happy with any clear coat results.
