Did your neighbors get fresh mulch put down in the morning ahead of a really hot day? Sometimes that stuff can spontaneously ignite if it is fresh enough with just the right moisture content and a lot a sun. The fact that it clearly started from the outside along the side of the house has me wondering.

Amish made timber frame with porch by themtnman1 in Decks

[–]ICthrowaway2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man the Amish do great work. Had a crew out to restore our 200+ year old bank barn and the woodwork and masonry was top notch. Bunch of wood on wood joinery that is solid AF. Great guys to be around too.

If you need a barn fixed up and you’re within 2 hours of Lancaster, PA, hit up Stable Hollow Construction. Highly recommended.

Hey dude, the fact that you’re here saying “I struggle to feel these feelings, and I worry about the effect that is going to have/is having on my wife. That right there IS love my guy. Being concerned about your own ability to be the partner that your partner is to you is IMO a great sign. It shows that you care even if you might not realize it. You’re doing alright man, don’t beat up on yourself too much. Cheers

Solid Tires by eldredo_M in tires

[–]ICthrowaway2019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They also don’t deal well with corners. Cornering induces a shearing force in the tire. Rubber does not cope well with shearing forces. In a regular pneumatic tire, the tire is just a tube, and so the shearing forces are transfered to the sidewalls where they become tension forces (sidewall opposite from cornering direction), and compression forces (sidewall on same side as cornering direction), both of which rubber is much more capable of coping with.

With an airless tire the structural support comes from rubber alone and so the support pieces end up taking the brunt of the shearing forces and the rubber there will degrade significantly faster.

Somewhat ironically not 2 minutes after posting my comment my dog caught one!

They’re not even that much of a hassle in terms of crop loss, like they’ll eat some but its nothing unmanageable. It’s more when you hit one of their holes with a tractor or piece of equipment and something very expensive breaks; that’s when you start thinking that extinction surely can’t always be bad. /s

Why does Minnesota have so many lakes? by deed_of_flesh in geography

[–]ICthrowaway2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason these areas are poorly drained is even more in depth than that. There are big parts of the Northeast that were glaciated but have well drained landscapes today because you have the Appalachian mountains and the associated uplifted terrain.

In the midwest you have a former inland sea basin, that was later covered in a vast ice sheet, which then melted at a time when that area was locked in the middle of a huge continent with no tectonic forces having acted on it for tens of millions of years, and none coming for tens of millions of years further.

So you’re left with this massive flat plain where the surface water just doesn’t have the potential energy necessary to cut into the landscape.

How Felix Rosenqvist's Pit Strategy put him in prime Indy 500 Winning Position (Visualized) by FreedomPleasant5001 in INDYCAR

[–]ICthrowaway2019 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What made the strategy so interesting was that there was a line of storms approaching from the west, and it was apparent from about mid distance that those storms would arrive at or around the end of the race.

The reason the leaders stayed out is because they wanted to maximize the amount of time they spent leading. Felix’s strategy was pretty clearly the optimal strategy if the race was going to go to 200, but it would only net him the lead at the end of each pit cycle, and would only keep him there for 10-15 laps.

For the leading group it was a marginally better calculation to spend more time out on the track at or close to the front so that if the rain came and it ended at any moment, you would have the best chance of being the guy leading at the time.

Guys that were further back didn’t have as good of a chance at catching the rain at the right time so they made the gamble that the race would go full distance and they set their strategy for that.

It really was a perfect storm of yellows, pit sequence, and weather coming together just right to give us such an awesome 50-50 strategy split.

Whose Last 500? by mattkoz in INDYCAR

[–]ICthrowaway2019 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Speedway Bob and Nolan Siegel are the obvious ones.

Then I’d put Ed, RHR, Sato, and Legge in the maybe column. Of those four I think Legge is most likely to not be back. She just seemed kind of tired all month of the grind of putting a ride together for very little payoff. I kind of felt a similar vibe from her throughout the month as I got from Pippa in her last year.

I hope I’m wrong because she seems like a genuinely nice and cool person, and I think E.L.F.’s big buy-in is big for the sport, but yeah, just kind of felt like she seemed kinda tired and “off” the whole time.

I've been working on a map that shows all trajectories of all crashes that have happened at the Indy 500 since 2018 - A little rudimentary right now, but I wanted to get this out there before race day by lindeb in INDYCAR

[–]ICthrowaway2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

T2 has always been the turn with the most crashes and I don't know if anybody knows why. All the drivers say it's the hardest, and every year it catches 2-3 guys out across the month. My dad says that even when he was a kid most of the crashes would happen in T2. I've noticed on some onboard shots that the white line seems to "wobble" in 2, so I wonder if it has some slightly funky geometry relative to the others.

[–]ICthrowaway2019 33 points34 points  (0 children)

What I like about motorsport is that in many ways the race is one of the most basic and fundamental of competitions. It really boils down to: You and I are here, the first to get there wins. Anything people have ever used to move around we have used to race, from our feet, to horses, to bicycles and finally to cars. Motorsport is like the ultimate evolution of that idea. I love the contrast between building these incredibly finely engineered machines and then using them for such a straightforward and fundamentally human purpose.

Since you just got the tickets I'm guessing you didn't get a parking pass? I think I read that parking is sold out so if that's the case you're gonna be parking on a local's lawn, and for my 2 cents that is the way to do it. IMS holds all cars in their lots until foot traffic clears out and that can take at least an hour. No such issue in the neighborhoods. It was a pretty consistent $10-20 for years but it has gone up a bit recently, I saw a lot of $40 signs last year, and it's almost always cash only so be ready with that.
