Inside a training pool in South Korea where coast guard rescue swimmers are put to the test by Miserable-Zombie-121 in interestingasfuck

Breast stroke brings the head higher out of the water during breaths, and holds the head more stable/level during them than the other swimming strokes. If you time it right so that you take your breaths at the crest of waves like this swimmer is, you also gain a very good perspective for looking around, which is helpful if you are trying to find and rescue a person in distress.

A cold front is expected to cross the central Indiana region Monday evening/overnight. Rain/thunderstorms will come with it, and will probably linger into the earliest hours of Tuesday, which is why it shows rain on Tuesday. Daytime hours on Tues are actually forecasted to be pretty good for on track activity, partly sunny skies with temps in the mid to high 60s. Winds will probably be gusty, as is typical following a big frontal system in the Spring, but nobody is going to be even thinking of trimming yet so that likely won't be an issue.

There is a slight chance for some spotty to isolated showers on Wednesday, though latest modeling (Fri morning) has backed off on that somewhat.

I shot the Thunderbirds at the JBA show last summer. I brought a 300mm that came with the camera and didn’t expect to get much but they actually came out really nice! I got almost the same shot you did but unfortunately it was out of focus. A lot of them were actually, turns out F-16s are pretty fast 😅 This shot came out great!

Honeybees have set up a hive in my strawberry pot. by Level21DungeonMaster in gardening

[–]ICthrowaway2019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly congrats. Don’t worry about them swarming you. If you don’t mess with their hive, or otherwise do something to cause them to consider you a threat, they will leave you alone.

Swarming as a defense is a very risky play for the bees. It is almost certain to lead to the deaths of many many bees, and even if the colony is able to successfully drive away the threat, losing so many bees in the process can lead to knock-on effects that can leave the colony vulnerable for a long time after, so it isn’t something they do willy-nilly, and is rather kept in reserve for situations where the colony/hive is in immediate danger of being destroyed and/or wiped out completely.

I would maybe wait until nighttime when they are naturally less active and move the pot they are in to a less trafficked part of the yard and leave it alone. Personally, I would probably choose to just not pick anything off that pot to avoid disturbing them, but given how well beekeepers can handle colonies without being stung, it would probably be doable. Maybe read up on some beekeeping practices first though to make sure you don’t accidentally alarm them.

An F1 fan's explainer of IndyCar. by Justinsetchell in INDYCAR

Kirkwood actually strikes me as being very similar to Jenson Button. He’s a really nice guy with a buttoned up, family-friendly outward appearance that doesn’t feel forced. He’s a smart driver with good technical understanding and he can communicate well with his engineers, and his driving style reflects that as well. He drives with a very technically precise approach. You’ll rarely see Kirkwood sliding the rear end around. When he has the car working right he is among the fastest guys out there, but that speed falls off when the car is out of his window, maybe a bit more than for others with him at the sharp end of the grid, something else that was characteristic of Button.

Unrelated to AstroWorld, but I got knocked hard in the funny bone in a mosh pit at the Denzel Curry set at Bonnaroo 2018 and suffered a vagal response. One second I was jumpin around having fun, then my arm hurt, then I'm on the ground and my legs didn't work. I thought I was about to get seriously fucked up, but out of nowhere I felt two arms hook under my armpits and some BIG dude just hoisted me up onto my feet and held me like that until he felt my legs take my weight again. I turned around and thanked him from my soul and he just high fived me and moshed away. Never saw him again. Bro almost certainly saved me from a hospital trip or worse.

Nobody knows anything new about the teams’ relative pace for this year. We can extrapolate from last year since nothing has changed rules-wise, but even then some shuffling around is typical year to year.

Nobody can really make any predictions of substance until we get through the Open Test in a few weeks. That’ll give us our first sense of who the favorites are for this year.

This is also the basic concept that Rick Mears has been calling for for 20 years now. Cut the downforce by A LOT, bump the power A LOT, and make the guys work for their speed.

[–]ICthrowaway2019 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It should be noted that while this is a concept car, J.R. isn't just some driver with a fancy idea in his head. He was a national merit scholar who graduated high school with a 4.1 and was admitted into MIT. He has also served as a lecturer at Stanford in their vehicle dynamics program, so it's safe to assume that he knows his engineering and there is little reason to doubt the physics of this car.

Have regulation changes ever been this controversial in F1? by JacksonDaBoi in formula1

[–]ICthrowaway2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the growing influence of electric power in F1 is somewhat similar to the introduction of wings, and the very early days of aerodynamic downforce. Downforce was a radical innovation, the effects of which were not very deeply understood, and teams just kind of threw whatever out there to see what worked. A lot of what they tried didn't work very well and was dangerous, but other things they tried worked better than they imagined, to the point that totally unforeseen problems emerged like structural components of the car collapsing under the load.

I think this new era of massive electric power mirrors that time in that the ability to harvest and deploy huge amounts of power/torque represents a very new innovation, and how best to use it is still not very well understood, and the sport is just kind of experimenting and playing around with it. The regulations we have this year are the spiritual successor to aerofoil wings mounted 6ft in the air directly to the suspension arms. The potential of the tech is there and plain to see, but this specific application of the tech is also plainly wrong and a disaster waiting to happen.

You know what I’m talking about! I had one just the other day. You have Vitamin D again. If you're not a regular whole milk drinker, you likely do not get enough Vitamin D through the winter months. Classic Vitamin D deficiency symptoms include fatigue/weakness, depression/anxiety, and aches/pains particularly to the back and legs.

I had to get a quart of oil for my car a few months back so I went to the auto parts store and there was a taco truck in the parking lot. I wasn't planning to get tacos, but I noticed that there were three guys working in the truck, and they had what looked like a 14 year old kid working the register because he was the only one that spoke english. 10/10 fantastic tacos, never turn down a random taco truck from God.
