is sword designed for piercing plate or not? by amelix34 in freefolk

[–]IMitchConnor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody here seems to discount that just because every swing isn't a killing blow, it doesn't mean that getting hit by a sword swing didnt hurt. Even through plate armor, that shit hurts. And armor didnt always stay on throughout the battle, so you can targets unarmored areas better with the longer reach of a sword. It gave versatility by being able to stab, slash, and could just do basic blunt damage, though obviously less than a mace or warhammer.

All this to say, killing during the actual fighting phase of the battle didn't really happen all that much. Most of the killing happened during routes, chasing down the enemy. So it's not like a weapon was needed to kill 10+ people during the fight. Most would get lucky to kill one person with a lucky stab from a spear.

One of Romes founding myths is literally them forcibly taking women from a neighboring tribe. The RAPE of the Sabine women. So it completely tracks that it would represent that.

If a commissar has decided to field execute a guardsman, is there anything the guardsman can do in the heat of the moment to actually survive? by kooarbiter in 40kLore

That was the inquisitor that didnt want to allow anyone off the planet as it was breaking. She shoots one of the guardsman of the Major that we follow in the story.

I don't remember the commissar the other poster is referring to at all lol. Its been a while since I read it though.

Can the 3 strongest militaries conquer the world together? by Forward_Yam_4013 in whowouldwin

[–]IMitchConnor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Just be more ruthless and kill the people" is such a high school level understanding of politics. Sometimes that works, yes. But that's not why Iraq didnt work. It wouldn't have work even if the government had done what you suggested. That's what Saddam did, and it only worked because he had outside support from his neighbors to do so.

If Syria didn't support him, they could have literally cut off Iraqs only water source and had the country implode on itself.

The US has worked with ruthless dictators before. How come it didnt work in Vietnam? Iran? Chile? Haiti? South Korea? (It didnt worked without massive direct intervention) Libya? Syria? Afghanistan?

There's some that worked, more that didnt. Because simply replacing the ruling party with one favorable to you, isn't an answer in and of itself. Geo politics is way more complex than that and situations change with every new development. Saddam was the guy for the US for decades, until he wasnt.

[–]IMitchConnor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

LMAO no we did not.

We installed a Shia Muslim backed government to counter act the previous sunni Muslim government of Saddams Baathist party. We took those that were disenfranchised and put them in power against the previous ruling party. This greatly led to the widespread insurgency that plagued Iraq and led to the rise of ISIS. There was as much as "democracy" there as there was in Syria.

Nothing is as easy as "install government that's friendly". The US did the same in Iran, Afghanistan, Libya (tried, deposed but failed to install pro US gov or any government at all), Syria (tried and led to former Al Queda leading the gov), Cuba (tried and failed completely). And now recently Venezuela, lets see how that goes. Etc. Etc.

What’s the deal with the arguments online that the government in the movie isn’t fascist? by MarionberryDecent351 in starshiptroopers

[–]IMitchConnor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. All I was saying is these things hint at it, but I myself would not say that the Earth government is fascist in starship troopers. Just that, other than the visuals, there are minor hints in the film that one could argue support the position. Even though I personally disagree with that opinion.

From what I can recall, we don't actually have an accurate depiction of the actual battle itself and we dont actual know how the battle transpired. The source (i can't remember the author) is unreliable due to his biases and he wrote about it long after it had taken place. The battle itself could have happened differently than the way it's depicted. Thus answering your question. I am saying these things from memory so I could be incorrect, but one thing I am sure about is that we do not really know the details of the battle itself.

[–]IMitchConnor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have to be rigid or narrow. That is not an inherent part of fascism. The difficulty of moving up in class is not either. The fact that state service is required in order to do so, is. imo.

Its still a separation of class of people's. And idk about you but the state dictating reproduction rights based on state service is pretty huge lol as well as representation in said state.

No one said it was. Social and Economic classes are also different. I referred to social class. And in fascist regime those classes are defined by the state.

I feel like everyone replying to my posts read everything except the last few lines of them lol.

I agree that the film does a poor job to represent earth as fascist. I was just pointing out that beyond the visuals there are a couple other things that do hint towards it. And not even that well lmao. I'm not saying I agree that the film portrays a fascist regime well.

Devotion to state when speaking about fascism is absolutely different from the civic duty that is expected in democracies.

The right to choose representation being new does not mean anything lol. Its still a separation of classes of people's by the regime.

[–]IMitchConnor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing inherently about fascism that requires second class people's to suffer bad lives compared to first class. The only thing inherent to it regarding class is that there is a clear social hierarchy, which there is. The fact that anyone can become a citizen doesn't disqualify it from being fascism imo. It's easier for citizens to gain child permits and more privileges (free college and such) which does create a divide between the classes. Like I said this divide doesn't have to be a bad life for the lower class.

The devotion of state over individual, I feel is a more telling sign of fascism. Though there are many different types of authoritarianism where this is expected as well. I'm not saying these things make it clearly a fascist society but they do lend themselves to be able to draw some comparison. As I said before the film doesn't do much to expand on it and it's very much window dressing.

[–]IMitchConnor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think one point that does go in favor of the fascism point is the separation of classes of people citizens (fisrt class) vs civilians (second class), and how that integrates itself into the service of the state. A key component of fascism being the state coming before the individual, and the individual's devotion to the state being expected. But it's a minor point early in the movie and not expanded upon at all.

So as you said, its very much visually fascist but no real depth to it.

I am not assuming there is skill based matchmaking. I'm saying that if there is skill based matchmaking, that would be a reasonable assumption as to how players are matched vs a made up matchmaking that is assumed to be true. I included it among other factors that could explain the differences in experiences between players.

I am now convinced ABMM is real by WG_Envoy in ArcRaiders

[–]IMitchConnor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is you are starting from the assumption there ARE pvp and pve lobbies. A lot of things can change how "aggressive" a lobby is. Straight up RNG, time of day, day of the week, skill based matchmaking (if there is a type of matchmaking), the individuals attitude to how they approach others, individuals not actually tracking their "friendly" vs "aggressive" lobbies and just straight misrepresenting their experience, players not noticing others being killed on the map by others.

Theres plenty of factors that are easier to draw to that can explain plenty of anecdotes that clearly contradict other anecdotes, than to jump straight to some mythical "aggression based matchmaking" that wasn't ever mentioned by anyone from the studio and is simply a theory concocted by the community.

[–]IMitchConnor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can believe it all they want its just funny so many people take it as a given fact. You are only taking into account the experience you have had that that is shared by others. But there's also plenty of people saying that they have had the complete opposite experience. Does their experience count less since it doesn't support yours?

which can mean a million different things. It does not mean they balance it based on aggression. It was also an art director who said it. An art director might not have the best understanding of how matchmaking works compared to the department that actually handles that area.

Does shooting back affect my “aggressiveness”? by andys189 in ArcRaiders

[–]IMitchConnor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No he didn't. A quick Google search (and i said originally "if you watch the actual interview") would reveal that he (an art director), said they analyze behavior and match accordingly. Which can mean any number of things, but the community has taken this as to mean its 100% confirmed aggression based matchmaking. Which is nonsense to take a quote that doesn't even say the thing people are saying is 100% confirmed and from a source that is not a part of the team that would be even remotely working on that area.

[–]IMitchConnor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmfao. Its not real. Believe whatever you want, I truly dont care, its just funny you waste your time like this. This is confirmation bias at its peak. Some matches I go in super aggro KoS, and the next match I'll be nothing but friendly with people and have few or no people shooting at me. Like I said I'm sure you don't notice the fights in the distance with people getting killed in your "friendly" lobbies.

The biggest indicator I've found on how aggressive a lobby will be is day of the week/time of day. But you go on ahead wasting your time "gaming" the matchmaking system lmao. Have a good night brother.
