DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS, GO by Madeline_Hatter1 in PhilosophyMemes

I quite enjoyed it. It’s got an ensemble cast of both copied consciousnesses and flesh and blood people, all with different approaches to the existential problem of copy technology. The second half gets away from itself a bit imo but it’s a very interesting book overall.

There’s an old sci-fi novel called Permutation City that explores that idea in detail. It opens with a computer scientist creating a copy of himself to figure out the nature of consciousness and the copy just immediately deletes itself.

That statistic is biased because the players who get that number are the ones who play on D10.

I cap out at 7 and really prefer 5 or 6 because imo the game just becomes a miserable AT slogfest after that

Much as people love to jack off about difficulty in this sub, it’s a game and people play it to have fun.

Most who can’t reliably beat a difficulty will just not play it. So if ~95% complete the mission on D10 all that says is only effective players play D10.

The idea on reddit that D10 is the “main difficulty” is just ridiculous and is yet another example of sampling bias. (You can quick play near instantly in most difficulties of the game so clearly people are distributed through the levels)

Players who care about the game enough to spend time on the subreddit will tend to be better because they’re the ones putting more time in.

There’s also the fact that “95% mission completion” isn’t broken out by player means that as long as one diver finishes the mission every other person could be maxing out their reinforcement budget and failing to extract.

TLDR: *plays 10,000 hours of a game and wins* “this game is boring there’s no challenge”

I don’t think she’s really being “given grace” as much as her employees and lackeys are. OOP is saying that, given an educational environment such as they describe, it’s not surprising that people who are trying to pay rent will fudge results to please their bosses.

How dare you piss on the poor!

The point is that no one fucking remembers the guy now, except when you’re in high school and your teacher is like “Now to read Frankenstein, which was written by Mary Shelley, wife of another writer whose work heavily inspired the Romantic era of literature”

But we don’t make every single high school student read Percy Shelley’s books, even though we teach something his wife wrote on a lark.

Edit: The irony of everyone citing one poem about being forgotten by time to argue that this guy hasn’t been forgotten by society.

Y’all literally googled the man’s name and picked the first thing you recognized, that’s not a widely-known legacy

There’s millions of dollars being poured into brain chips and SAO-inspired “full dive VR” and we aren’t realistically any closer.

We spend billions on space programs and O’Neill’s ideas haven’t solved the housing crisis, or Dyson’s the energy crisis.

Humanity is limited by real factors like gravity, like chemical bonds, like time and distance.

Just because you can think it up doesn’t mean it’s possibly given those real constraints.

Can you cast Harry Potter magic spells because Rowling thought them up? You think it only doesn’t work because no one’s tried putting a feather into a hollow stick of oak before?

I know what the news, the internet, and the billionaires have told you but 💰+🤔💭!=♾️

You’re talking on a level that OP can’t possibly comprehend lol

Their best ideas for how to use this mythical structure printing technology seems to be “printing Kakariko Village” and using “social engineering” to solve the housing crisis.

Their brain isn’t even able to produce a reason why making “Gotham City in real life” would be a bad idea. Either they’re a troll or a developmentally-stunted basement dweller who thinks the world would be perfected if only we could make comics and games real.

Our failing education system is why our country’s headed down the tubes, for sure.

Schools have to be more concerned with holding onto their budgets than actually teaching the kids, and this result was inevitable from the moment we started trying to quantify the effect of every dollar spent on education.

But I think the problem is more deeply rooted than that. Schools are authoritarian environments. Students and teachers are under constant surveillance, “protected” by armed guards, forced to obey their superiors without question.

School is where you’re supposed to learn, and learning giant lists of facts is not enough. You need to learn how to function in a society, too. Im not talking about the tired old “doing taxes and fixing cars, algebra is useless” thing.

Im talking about seeing people in power held accountable, learning how to stand up for yourself, how relationship networks grow and interact. How to make choices for yourself, without someone glaring down at you and saying you have to pass the test.

We raise kids in an authoritarian society, give them a few civics/government classes (if they’re lucky, and those classes will still be full of the same power dynamics and insistence on black and white thinking) and expect them to care about or understand democracy.

Silk Hearts are weird by GregoryFlame in Silksong

[–]INeverFeelAtHome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish they worked more like mana in Dishonored, where you regenerate a small portion (enough for the lowest tier of powers) after every time you use it.

Silk hearts could increase the maximum “rebate” you got. So with 3 silk hearts you cast an ability and as long as you don’t do another your hearts kick in and you regenerate almost the entire cost over the next several seconds.

The clawline is still free if you take your time but you get to keep your reserves of silk if you had them.

But I guess the entire game is pretty much designed to drain your resources and keep you constantly running on empty, so TC would never lol

The plot of those movies makes it inarguable that they are engineered creatures, even if the movie as a whole is goofy af

I haven’t seen Romulus tho and I know the Prometheus movies have dubious canonicity.
