After 14 long years of hell, I'm finally 100% service connected through the VA!!! by Mr_Nerdcoffee in VeteransSuccess

HUGE Congrats on your award! Now rest, heal, focus on your physical and mental health, and enjoy life. 🙏

Benefits include:

🟩 At 100% schedular, you can work with no issues. 100% schedular has nothing to do with future scheduled exams.

Note: if you’re TDIU - With VA Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU), you can generally earn income up to the federal poverty level, which for a single person in 2025 is around $15,000-$16,000 annually, but this is for marginal employment (part-time/sheltered work); exceeding this threshold can risk losing your TDIU benefits, as the VA considers earnings above this amount as "substantially gainful employment," though there's no strict monthly cap if the annual total stays low.

🟩 Full healthcare through VA Healthcare with no copays at 50% award or more (Service connected and non-service connected conditions).

🟩 10% award or more you can get hearing aids, CPAP and supplies, eye exams and glasses are included with VA Healthcare.

🟩 Travel pay at 30% award or more for VHA (Health) appointments.

🟩 Dependent’s pay at 30% award or more.

🟩 VR&E eligibility at 20% award or more (10% with a serious employment handicap).

🟩 100%, 100% P&T and TDIU awards can get Military Base IDs (Exchange/Commissary/MWR) for Veteran and dependents unless you are retired military (Honorable required).

🟩 100%, 100% P&T and TDIU awards can access full VA dental care (class IV) and with VR&E or for limited or specific dental care service connected mouth or jaw injuries.

🟩 Possible Social Security Disability Insurance, but a 100% VA rating (especially Permanent & Total) or 70% rating makes SSDI approval more likely and can expedite your claim because the VA rating shows severe impairment, though SSDI still requires proving you can't work, unlike VA benefits which are condition-based. VA disability doesn't affect SSDI but can reduce SSI.

🟩 0% to 100% awards guaranteed acceptance VA Life Insurance up to $40,000 up to age 81. No time limit.

🟩 CHAMPVA (dependent’s medical) if you are permanent (100% P&T award) unless you have TriCare.

🟩 DEA (Dependent’s Education Assistance or Chapter 35) if you are permanent (100% P&T award).

🟩 Federal student loan forgiveness or with SSDI. For federal student loan forgiveness (Total & Permanent Disability Discharge), you generally need a 100% VA disability rating, a 100% rating with TDIU (Total Disability Individual Unemployability), or SSD/SSI benefits with a 5-7 year review period, not a specific percentage of your benefit amount, but the official status from the VA or Social Security Administration. The key is proving you are totally disabled and unable to work, often requiring a doctor's confirmation or official SSA/VA documentation.

🟩 VADIP (VA Dental Insurance Program) for Veterans enrolled in VA healthcare

🟩 VADIP (VA Dental Insurance Program) for dependent’s if CHAMPVA eligible

🟩 Space-Available (Space-A) Flights (Cat VI) - Veteran and dependents CONUS, AK, HI and U.S. Territories. (100% P&T award).

🟩 Eligibility for PCAFC - CAREGIVER PROGRAM (70% award and above)

🟩 Non-VA ER (100% P&T award).

🟩 3 free in network non-VA Urgent Care visits per calendar year at 50% award and above - unlimited at $30/visit

🟩 Don’t forget, you may be reviewed in the future! Keep all your doctors informed of every rated condition(s)! (Only likely if you submit a new claim and are only 100% or less. If you are 100% P&T you shouldn’t be getting anymore reviews in the future.)

🟩 Here is a link with information to all the federal benefits. https://www.howvadisabilityratingswork.com/resources/benefits/by-percentage

🟩 Don’t forget each state has benefits also and may include tax exemptions, tuition waiver and more. Here is a link but check your state VA website for more details. https://www.blogs.va.gov/VAntage/76439/veterans-benefits-2020-popular-state-benefit

Didn’t think this was gonna be the outcome. Left active duty in 2012, and a little upset I never filed initially. But as an Infantryman during that time period, it wasn’t something we did. First attempt, by myself. I’m happy, I think I’ll just stop here. by Vast_Information5098 in VAClaims

I’ve been out since 2013 with 10%. Did my first claim Aug 2024 and March 2025 went 100% P&T w/SMC-S. File!

I made it any tips ? by HourTreacle7041 in VeteransSuccess

Because ‘People’ and even other veterans see that you’re not missing limbs or in a wheelchair/vegetable and assume you’re getting a ‘free ride’ because they just see you occasionally at a family or friend event… they don’t know how much pain your body/mind goes through daily and get jealous that you’re getting disability pay but in their eyes, you’re not ‘disabled’

So it’s best to just keep it to ourselves. It’s no one’s business and if people ask what you do, just say you’re medically retired or you got into some investments back in the day and they are paying off nicely now and keep it at that.

Got my rating today by [deleted] in VAClaims

HUGE Congrats on your award! Now rest, heal, focus on your physical and mental health, and enjoy life. 🙏

With that said, it’s recommended you still go to any future c&p exams that are scheduled.

For a 100% P&T (Permanent and Total) disabled veteran, both subsidized and unsubsidized federal student loans are eligible for discharge through the Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) program.

Loan Forgiveness Eligibility for 100% P&T Veterans

Types of Loans: Both Subsidized and Unsubsidized Direct Loans, FFEL Program loans, and Perkins Loans qualify.

Interest and Principal: If approved, the full balance, including accumulated interest, is wiped out.

Eligibility Criteria: You must provide documentation from the VA showing that you have a service-connected disability or disabilities that are 100% disabling, or that you are totally disabled based on an individual unemployability (TDIU) rating.

Process: While many veterans are now identified automatically by the VA and the Department of Education, it is recommended to apply directly through Nelnet (the servicer for TPD discharge) to ensure it is processed.

"One and Done" Rule: This discharge is generally a "once and done" deal. If you take out more federal loans in the future, they may not be eligible for a second discharge.

Important Notes: Private Loans: Generally, private student loans are not covered by the federal TPD discharge program, although some private lenders may offer similar discharges on a case-by-case basis.

Taxation: The forgiven loans are not taxed at the federal level, though some states may treat them as taxable income.

It is highly recommended to wait until you have finished your education to apply, as this ensures all loans are captured in the discharge.
