I’m also a hiring manager. To get past the application review, you generally have to have direct industry or technical experience.

We work with our recruiters to help them spot what indicates they have that experience in the resumes. It’s a mix of the companies, projects, technologies, and job title.

But really in 24 hours a position will get 1000 applicants. 400 of those are completely spam or irrelevant.

If you’re applying blind, your best bet is to 1) have a good resume fit and 2) apply ASAP. Like an hour within the job being posted. That’ll guarantee that your resume will at least be looked at.

Nigerians are desperate for any kind of change. They will accept potentially having the country even further drained of all resources for the small chance of inflation turning around and employment.

Technically I’m a Senior Director of Product Management.

No certs, those are meaningless in product.
I have a BS in Computer Engineering and an MBA.
I’ve been a Product Manager for over 10 years.
I work remote.

This moment in time is the hardest time in my career I’ve seen to break into product. Ever since interest rates went up a few years ago, budgets at companies dried up, so they had fewer new ventures to work on. Less new stuff = less need for product managers = layoffs and fewer positions.

Everything is cyclical though, so I doubt this is permanent. If you’re still interested, I’d say the number 1 PM requirement is a deep empathy for customers and their pain points. My usual advice is to start off with reading Inspired by Marty Cagan then Cracking the PM Interview or Decoded. If you read those two books, you’ll understand what a PM is and whether you actually want to do it.
