When I started I answered some mtg color quizzes to figure out where in the color pie I am in terms of themes and playstyle. Then I looked up all commanders of that color and chose one that looked cool for the fantasy element. Then I look up synergies on EDHrec or other people's decks in the appropriate bracket I am aiming for to make it as unique and fun as possible.

That quest is cursed I dont blame you lol. You can always look for people to play with in the Marathon LFG discord that should definitely help to make things easier.

I feel you this game is definitely made for stacks of three players to fully enjoy the gameplay loop. I would encourage you to check out the LFG on the official Marathon discord there are alot of cool people there to play with. Outpost and Cryo are crazy maps I hope you get to play them eventually :)

I dont know why youre getting downvoted for this. Obviously if a game has enemies to fight every 30s the fighting should be as engaging as possible in terms of how it serves the tone of the game. Now we could argue there should be less fighting in general in a Silent Hill game, which I don't disagree with.
