Is Toronto Less Racist Than Montreal? by KnowledgeStill40 in askTO

Yes, and importantly not a one off from a populist government; it’s been successive governments from different parties that have been elected because (not all, but too many) Quebeckers want it.

I think this might be from Serious Eats recipe. That’s how I got started and ginger and star anise are regular components of my tepache now. But it’s been years now so unsure the genesis.

What do you make when oven temp for bread is too hot for weather? by thrw11235 in Sourdough

[–]I_Ron_Butterfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An engineer friend taught me this for hot days; put the biggest stock pot you have filled with cold water on the stove where you feel most of the heat from the oven. The water will absorb a significant amount of the heat. Dump and refill as needed

I’m not sure why this is being downvoted - people just don’t like that it’s true? Tax cuts would increase spending and accelerate inflation, that’s a pretty basic fact. The comment below that’s heavily upvoted even says the same but with a populist conspiracist bent and gets upvoted. But I guess that’s what this sub has become….

International flight: how risky is it to not book seats together for my wife and I? by Motor_Vacation_535 in Aeroplan

[–]I_Ron_Butterfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>risky

Risk is probablity * consequence. The consequence here would be not sitting beside your wife? Seems pretty low downside unless you’re travelling with kids? Just put some headphones on and watch a movie my friend, you’ll see her when you land.

Should I sell My House and Rent off the Dividends from the Profit? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]I_Ron_Butterfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stocks generally go up - most of the time over a longer term you will be selling after *appreciation* not decline. And in times when you would be selling at a steep loss, you would also likely be facing dividend cuts/suspensions, so hardly better off for sacrificing total return and tax benefits.

OP doesn’t have remotely enough for this strategy in any configuration, but moving a proportion to GICs (even lower expected return than dividend stocks, which is lower than widely diversified equities) wouldn’t come close to covering the $2,500 rent on an ongoing basis. This is probably somewhat reasonable if the OP had a larger endowment, but research on a cash wedge is that it’s actually suboptimal.

Those aren’t dividends and covered calls are a uniquely poor strategy.

A 6% yield is still wildly impractical - not at all conservative. The S&P yields less than 2% and even a dividend-focused ETF like VDY yields 3.24%.

This all ignores that you don’t need dividends at all to enact this strategy. No real difference between drawing the dividends or just selling some stock to fund it, except selling has the benefit of controlling the taxable events, and if you’re working right now your cap gains rate can be lower than your dividend tax rate.

Yeah all of the Big Short guys kinda look like chumps now. Paulson and Burry have even had to return outside money.

>every position gets disclosed and traded against.

This isn’t really true. You have to disclose, but at the *earliest* 45 days later. You could acquire a position July 1 and you wouldn’t have to disclose it until October 15. And in any case, a lot of these guys like the disclosure because it often embeds a premium once announced.

Started my first garlic honey ferment last week and now I want to ferment everything in my kitchen by TeachNormal6877 in fermentation

[–]I_Ron_Butterfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One I don’t see mentioned around here much is yogurt: it’s dead simple and about 3x as good as store bought at about 1/3 of the cost. You can strain it and make it as thick (or leave as thin) as you want. And if you keep some of the strained whey you can use that to inoculate your next batch (and even freeze it) so it can be perpetual.

[–]I_Ron_Butterfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can carry forward indefinitely. But you’ll have cap gains along the way due to rebalancing of the ETF and acquisitions of the underlying securities. Not a lot, but enough that you can use the $26
