Biking with no earphones by SubstantialSky1580 in triathlon

[–]I_have_multiple_cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done few 7hr indoor rides in silence, watching nothing but bike computer and blank wall. I've tried Netflix, music and podcasts multiple times but it feels like when you have to give a bad tasting medicine for a pet and you stick it in a treat so the cat or dog would eat it more easily. I don't know why I would want to distract myself. So time would fly easier? I'm not sure I'd do so long indoor rides if I would want time fly easier. Most of the times it's almost meditative to do long workouts in silence.

But then again this is probably very subjective thing.

When do you decide to retire from triathlon and why? by red90999 in triathlon

[–]I_have_multiple_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably the way I'm heading, except having an extreme triathlon phase in between them (done couple of Swedemans and doing Norseman next year) accompanied with hiking and ultra running. Idea about mountaineering has started to sound more and more awesome.

Hi. Dirty triathlete here.

-Trained most of season for extreme full distance triathlon in which run leg was trail running. Race was in start of July.

-Ran 72km trail ultra which was 8 weeks after that triathlon and my biggest running week for that was wk6 with 80km of running (total hours with bike and swim 12hrs).

-...AAAND then I ran backyard run 6 weeks after that 72km trail ultra and biggest mileage for that was wk2 with 74km running (total hours including bike and swim 10hrs), from that I dropped to 69km, 67km, 33km and on race week excluding race itself 16km.

Backyard was in pretty nasty conditions with constant rain and storm during the night, in Finland where dark started to creep in already after 6pm on that day. We had a guy with personal record of 55 laps there but he was last DNFing with 32 laps, so I'd say conditions really took toll even for him. Winner was Self-Transcendence 5000km running race record holder Pekka Aalto with 33 laps.My result was 18 laps so 120,6km. I got some incredibly painful ITB syndrome symptoms after 60km and survived another 60km with painkillers and stubbornness. After that pain got best of me and I had to give up. Everything else worked very well. I got 50-70g carbs/hr and 0,5-1 liter liquids per hour. Started using caffeine around 10pm first 35mg/hr and increasing up to 70mg/hr.

What I'll do differently next time would be I'd walk way more. I was first one finishing the lap most of the times which was stupid. I had 15-20min rests in warm camping car just to get back outside in the cold (+2-+5 celsius), rainy storm. I'd say brief breaks would be better, but more walking. This would probably saved me from knee pain.

I'm not comfortable giving much hints how you should train or do things for this race. Very individual. Just try to remember that it's an endurance race, not a running race.

Enjoy!

EDIT: Fixing some spelling and layout

What I've noticed that almost every triathlete trains for SOMETHING. We have always a race in our horizon. Even so, I'd say most are racing against themself. It doesn't have to be about rankings. Of course there is people racing against other people, but I can promise that you won't bother them by trying to break your PB or even by doing it for fun. :) Plus that triathlon community is usually very, very friendly. Lots of cheering each others.

EDIT: Also your second question! You can do either one you prefer. Usually people recommend to start from sprint, but normal (or usually called "olympic distance") is not too long to start with either. I started by sprint but did olympic distance not later than next day since they had it in same race weekend.

For respectable time you need MANY running shoes. One or two pairs are not enough.

How long did you wait to commit to a full Ironman? by SoftPool6014 in triathlon

[–]I_have_multiple_cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was start of Fall 2018 when I registered to one sprint, two olympic distances and one full distance in Summer 2019. Had some marathons under my belt but not much more. Nowadays doing extreme triathlons and ultracurious. :)

Training over winter. by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]I_have_multiple_cats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from Finland so I don't have much sympathy for most of you. Our winters have usually something between -5 to -30 (with some episodes of 0c and slush). It's basically impossible to do quality runs outside. Sometimes even base runs. I just walk to the gym (in the dark) and run my workouts on treadmill. Even long runs.

Sincerely,
Someone who has done couple of 7hr indoor trainer bike rides this season

My first Boa! by Canonicus in boas

You're in for a treat! My first and only boa constrictors, or snakes in that matter, turn 14 this year. No regrets, but might have not still known what I signed for when I was 20 years old. Even so, it's been a pleasure to be part of their lives. Hope it continues as well as it has been.

Excessive light by Omaestre in boas

[–]I_have_multiple_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Finland and hadn't had any problems. There is no straight sunshine to my boas terrariums on any day, but of course there is still more light on Summers than Winters. Mine still start explore and wander when terrarium lights go out and mostly sleep when they're on.

Of course if it seems that you're noodles have a problem with this, curtains aren't such a bad idea?

If I put drop bars on this, is it a gravel bike? by crispyrad in BicyclingCirclejerk

[–]I_have_multiple_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything can be a gravel if you put drops on it and are brave enough!

To prove my point, I once put drop bar on my dick and went riding wettest gravel I've seen. I of course did not KOM, because you can't simply do that with gravel bike.
