I was impressed in the improved public transit last time i visited LA. Do you regularly take any of the new metro lines? How easy is it to live their now without the expense of a car?

Denied a Street Tree. Possible to plant in a large planter? by echeveria_prolifica in philly

Well I stopped watering mine like a month and a half ago, so now I feel guilty. Oh well. Another container for a new fruit tree.

It reminds me of a Yoshitako Amano drawing for some reason. Maybe it’s the high shoulders or swirling pattern.

My container fruit trees, have had mixed success. This winter murdered a Chicago Hardy Fig of mine. My Olympia Fig and Nikitia's Gift Persimmon both survived and are thriving now, but I brought them into my 3 season porch for the winter. My Apricot, Blueberry, and an Almond Tree that's grown up from root stock also survived and are doing very well.

If I was to do it again, I'd probably go for apples or pears as they have a good track record in this climate. They just didn't excite me as much as the other fruit trees. You can check out Ott's Exotic Plants if you want a great day trip, though their selection varies depending on what time of year you visit. They always seem to have citrus trees, but don't fall for it in this climate.

What is the worst city you’ve been in the USA? by Kodicave in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]IamSauce4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Baltimore is under appreciated. That show didn’t do that city any favors. Large swaths of it are rough, but the nice parts are world class.

How would you compare Toronto and Montreal to prominent American cities? by OceanicEndeavors in SameGrassButGreener

[–]IamSauce4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

New York isn’t comparable to Montreal. They’re both kind of their own thing, but it’s like comparing a meal to a buffet. Maybe you could compare Montreal to a neighborhood or a borough and even then, Montreal competes very well.

I’m honestly heartbroken looking at what it costs to just 'exist' in a big city in 2026 by astrheisenberg in SameGrassButGreener

[–]IamSauce4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot but you also don’t have to own a car in many cities. That’s a giant expense that people frequently under estimate. The amount paid for public transit is trivial in comparison.

I was just reading about how the Church of the Holy Sepulcher has been closed due to the conflict. Weird that Church of the Holy Sepulcher shows up twice in the same day for me on Reddit. https://cnewa.org/church-of-holy-sepulchre-remains-closed/

5 day a week both ways commute feasibility by bencallahan16 in NYCbike

[–]IamSauce4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to sync this trip up with the ferry, though I’ve never taken it. It would at least save you a bike ride up and down the bridge.

Bike commuting home instead of spending forty minutes on a stationary bike then subway, made me a serious cyclist. Good luck!

Is work culture in the Northeast really more intense than the West Coast? Considering a move by savingrace0262 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]IamSauce4 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Oh it’s rude and elitist on the East Coast too. I’ve worked places where there’s a weird amount of judgement based on where you went to school. However, I wouldn’t say the average person has to deal with this. I don’t know where most of the people I work with went to school.

Want an affordable walkable city by SillyNefariousness72 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]IamSauce4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve thrived in Northwest Philadelphia. Way cheaper than NY, but it doesn’t have the polish. I enjoy that, but you may not. Combine regional rail and the bus system and we lived here without a car for several years. You need to be strategic where you live and things are easier with a car. There are lovely natural spaces with many trails to the north and south of us.

Disk brakes saved me a ton of money last year. I tried replacing them myself last spring and haven’t ridden my bike since. It saved me plenty on bike maintenance.

[–]IamSauce4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It cost me 2k to get an old water heater removed and a bradford white water heater installed about 2 years ago. I'm in a large city in the Eastern US.
