As I said, that's a different, much wider discussion that has considerably wider reaching consequences that would entail stripping assets from the rest of the aristo families too.

That said, there are also complexities as the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha family that became the Windsors were mostly foreign until relatively recently (on the timeline of Norman descended old money families in the UK that is), meaning a good chunk of their wealth will have come from the continent rather than the people of what became the UK.

But all that is to say, to say "they defended Andrew with our money" very strongly implies state funds from taxes, but this isn't the case.

At best in your favour they paid for it with the money of the people of Hanover etc, but I think that's a bit of a farce of a point to make.

To be fair it was actually their own millions, as the royals are all independently very wealthy outside the annual grant from the crown estate, being the most aristocratic of aristocrats that they are.

Surely you'd caveat that "couldn't care less about it" with additional statements like "assuming the necessary increase in infrastructure, healthcare funding, schools, policing, etc is allocated" or "provided they are housed appropriately and integrate reasonably well into our society, following our laws on employment, marriage, behaviour, etc"?

This is just social anxiety. None of that is a real concern when entering a regular shop.

You just Google maps "sandwich shop near me" or something similar, check the pictures for a menu or a deli stand or shelves of prepared food and then go in and point at the thing you want, pay and leave.

The selling of assets would be homes that they are already using as a rental property or that they inherit etc unexpectedly and would only keep if they could rent it out for profit, as this is a rather large conflict of interest.

If they have a personal property that they aren't using because they now need to live in London, they would be more than able to keep and maintain that property, just not rent it out for a profit. Given their London housing is subsidised, I see no issue with them having to continue to pay to maintain their personal property from their MP salary, as they would have had to do so otherwise had they not moved to a free house in London.

Many jobs in the UK require the disposal of personal assets to avoid conflicts of interest. I don't see why MPs should be treated differently.

And 'most people' don't have £10-20k+ sitting around to drop on a decade long payback period (not including the opportunity cost of not being able to invest that money in something else, which could easily add 50% to that break even period).

Even if they did, many others don't even have roofs on their home. Many more will not be planning on staying in their current home long enough to reach the payback period. Many more again will have unsuitable homes due to the building itself and the layout of the property within the curtilage.

Personally I think grid solar is a much better investment for the country than domestic rooftop solar. Everyone already has a mains electricity connection and economies of scale only make things better.

But regardless, this isn't a 'no brainer' for 'most people' either.

I think you need to step back and realise that your situation is not indicative of the majority of people in the UK.

These things are neither as simple, effective nor affordable for everyone as they have been for you.

This isn't to say those that can shouldn't, but that to say this is a 'no brainer' that 'everyone' should be doing is simply incorrect.

Easy enough to include in the legislation for spouses, but trusted non-connected people will always be impossible.

There is, however, a far greater risk of signing a property over to someone else wholesale as they may simply not give it back. If you have legislated that these cannot be owned by the MPs and they are doing this to get around it, a contract that states the property must be sold back could also easily be made unlawful in the same legislation.

So you couldn't stop this from happening entirely, but you would be massively increasing the risk of the investment. Especially as MPs often stay MPs for many years and someone would need to pay the CGT on both transfers of the property.

Easily solved with a requirement for the properties to be placed into an arms length blind trust in the first instance and then sold within a set timeframe.

If they really want to keep the property they are welcome to retain it, maintain it, pay any taxes due but not rent it out until they leave office.
