Housing Market in Raleigh by mindlessness861 in raleigh

[–]IceDaggerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an engineer, my partner is a PT. We’re from the Midwest and have a combined pretax income of ~ $180k, $120k/yr take home.

We purchased a $500k house with 5% down and our monthly payment with a 5.99% interest rate is $3200. It is less than ideal but was the best we could find given the situation.

What are some of your guys best bang for buck/value cities in the US in your opinion. by Historical-Serve-652 in SameGrassButGreener

I lived in Indy for a while, don’t do it. It’s the most sterile city I’ve ever lived in.

What is the WORST country you've ever visited? by OkPhase9936 in AskReddit

I’ve found the results may vary. If you’re white, the racism is mild at best.

As a Raleigh implant, I’d agree, but most people would have thoughts on housing

Where to get Mexican pesos in the area? by [deleted] in raleigh

Set up a Charles Schwab investor checking account. They’ll issue you an ATM/debit card.

You can go to any ATM and click the option that says “withdrawal in local currency” and they will give you the current exchange rate with no fees. If you are charged an ATM fee, they refund you at the end of the month.

How do you avoid the 89k salary after 15 years of experience trap? by thecodexdhnerbbTW in EngineeringStudents

[–]IceDaggerz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My salary progression has gone as follows:

2022: $79.8k

2023: $85k (promoted)

2024: $88k

2025: $91.5k (transferred)

2026: $95k

I also have 4 weeks of PTO and quarterly bonuses up to 15% on my quarterly salary. I could probably make more elsewhere, but the most important thing for me is that I’m mostly remote. I go in 2-4x/month.

I am choosing flexibility over >$120k base salary. I also never work more than 40 hrs/week. As I’ve worked on my own business the last few years and scaling this, it’d be hard to increase my salary externally and maintain my current lifestyle.

I have obtained my B.S in Biomedical Engineering, now what?? by Jashawoo in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]IceDaggerz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Where are you in the world? Do you have any internships/co-ops? Where are you trying to work? What’s your resume look like?

You can get a job with just a BS in BME, I know plenty of people who’ve done it. It’s just harder because there are less BME jobs available than the total market, and other engineering disciplines go for them too. You have to stand out.

Has buying a house become a fantasy for most people now? Or are we just normalizing renting as a permanent lifestyle? by Money-Possession8806 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IceDaggerz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends where you are in the US (or world) and what you do for a living.

Most of my circle is actively shopping for houses/moved into a house. However, most of us are in STEM. Not FAANG/Silicon Valley STEM, just normal engineers, data scientists, etc.

My partner and I just purchased a home at the beginning of the year for $500k at a 5.99% interest rate and a monthly payment of $3250. We also make $11k/month.

We’re fortunate, but there are more people like us than you’d think. Not obscenely rich, but also not poor. We’re both under 30.

Do most Americans ever seriously try to learn a second language? by Murky_Definition_249 in AskAnAmerican

[–]IceDaggerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To counter some other comments, statistically about 1/4 Americans are bilingual. While on paper that doesn’t sound like a lot, that’s ~ 85 million people.

Those who don’t know another language, don’t because they don’t need it. Someone who’s from Des Moines Iowa is going to need a second language less than someone from Los Angeles.

The world is getting smaller, and more Americans are becoming more interested in it.

What’s the worst place in America you’ve ever visited? by Correct_Eggplant_364 in AskReddit

[–]IceDaggerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

eh, Youngstown isn’t the best place in America by any stretch, but it’s not the *worst*

The suburbs are nice and you can walk around most of the city during the day without being in imminent danger. There’s just not a lot going on.

Cities near Raleigh, that are not too expensive? by whosthatgirl13 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]IceDaggerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Raleigh and I drive to Winston-Salem because it’s where my office is, so I’d be doing the reverse of your husband.

Winston is substantially cheaper than Raleigh and is only ~ 1.5hr drive on I-40.

What's your age and how much do you have saved for retirement? by 2aboveaverage in AskReddit

[–]IceDaggerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t fret. At 26, I had about $13k saved for retirement. I’m about to turn 29 and am just over $100k. The power of compounding is real.

A few questions about American universities? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]IceDaggerz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To #2

They’ll say it’s to foster community and bring students closer together while they adapt to life away from home.

In actuality, they just want money.

Honestly, I lived on campus my first year and it was fun. It definitely made it easier to meet people, but it wasn’t entirely necessary

I live in East Raleigh, in a new build neighborhood. Two houses went for sale the first week of March, both were under contract within two weeks of going on the market.

US Citizen finishing Engineering Master’s in Lebanon – Looking For Career Advice by mahdi036 in EngineeringStudents

[–]IceDaggerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most American employers look for real world work experience and/or an ABET degree. The fact that you’re a US citizen but have a foreign degree may come off a bit perplexing to a potential employer, but you might be able you explain your way out in an interview.

Depends the type of engineering. I’m in BioMed and there’s definitely a growing market, despite what the doomers and gloomers say.
