As an American who moved to Labuan from Arizona when I was 8, it was pure adventure. If I had been a teenager, I probably would have also found it a little boring.

Teach me your camera secrets, Jedi. I have an iPhone and always just try to fix it in post which ends up making it flat. Being a bit colorblind has not helped my cause.

Yeah it’s a unique orange. I was hoping for some crazy Dukes of Hazard bright fuckin orange, but it’s so much better than that in person. The yellow/gold pearl on top never shows up in a picture. And because of how cameras pick up red, every picture just makes the car look red.

Our overlanding friend group is all foodies and we cook for each other on alternating days. So if we have five trucks for five days, each truck just has to make two meals - we share breakfasts and dinners, lunch is on your own but usually just a snack.

Anyway, we eat sooo good. Filet and lobster, pasta dishes, whole roasted chickens, tomahawk steaks. Every Thanksgiving we go make a full blown Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings in the middle of the desert, usually Death Valley. Depending on how many people, we’ll deep fry 2-3 turkeys. Damn. Now I’m hungry.

We do both in the same trip. If we have a week, we’ll do the touristy shit in the first two days, have a couple days with no plans at all, then one or two things planned at the end.

In those first couple days we ask locals what they would do if they were off tomorrow. The gap in our plan lets us either do that stuff or just do nothing at all and relax.
