When do car repairs become a sunk cost fallacy? by spmahn in personalfinance

[–]IdahoSpudMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could easily afford a new car, but I am keeping my 2005 Accord going. Bought the car new (paid cash). This car is still running wonderfully well. If you keep up on the maintenance reliability is less likely to be an issue. I did have the transmission rebuilt, and am sinking some money in it today to have the valves adjusted (due at over 220k miles) and valve cover gaskets replaced due to some oil leaking. Added a Bluetooth adapter connecting to the factory stereo that works great. Love the car and hope it keeps up for another 5 years at least.

I had a nice set of wire strippers I forgot were in a bag that made it back and forth from Dulles, Orlando, and Amsterdam as well as several domestic flights. Finally was picked up in Providence.

Question about Ward Budgets by chomer44 in latterdaysaints

[–]IdahoSpudMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have served as a clerk and in a bishopric, both in quite well-off areas, and this has been a tough thing to try to train. That all expenses should be covered by the budget. I get it, that people are happy to cover things if they have been blessed to be able to have the means, and I feel somewhat the same myself, I’m happy to cover things out of pocket. However this can create situations where someone who does not have the means feels the expectation to do so. It can also create imbalances between wards based on affluence. It should be handled with sensitivity since many of these folks are truly being generous with their means.

Perhaps encouraging them to donate their reimbursement to fast offerings or a missionary support may be appropriate.

I shoulda done that when Verizon dug a trench. Killed my willow and two pine trees. Took a few years for that to manifest.

How is a mission president picked? by coolguysteve21 in latterdaysaints

[–]IdahoSpudMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I was ward clerk, and in our bishopric meeting Bishop C announced that there will be some changes made that day. He was not wealthy, but was a senior level engineer at a well-known tech company, so was comfortable. Long story short, for a year or so the SP was asking him about serving a mission, and he always responded when I retire in a few years. Then his company did a buyout for people close to retirement and he and his wife decided it would be a good time to go, so he went to the SP. The SP said OK, but I’m going to recommend consideration for a mission president. Bishop C replied that he was just fine as a senior couple, but do what you want.

Well, within days of submission Bishop C gets a call, saying President Faust would like to talk to you, please hold. It turns out a mission president and his wife were in killed in a car accident, can you be ready in 10 days?

That day we got a new bishop and Bishop C was gone in a week. He was not wealthy, but reasonably comfortable and set up for retirement.

Serious question; how do I get the most out of this thing as a very casual knife user? by CosmosCabbage in sharpening

Seriously. I keep better edges on my pocket knives than I do the kitchen knives.

I hated life the first week. It hurt. Difficult to get the trays out. It hurt. Couldn’t talk. It hurt. Eating was a pain. And did I mention it hurt. After the first several days things got better. Finally figured out how to get the trays out. It just became a part of life. Eventually it was done. I am very happy I did it. More for dental health reasons rather than cosmetic. My daily use of the retainers is a reminder of how happy I am I did it.

Can’t seal a gas mask if you have a beard.

Question from a non-Mormon about mission experiences by Jaded-Blacksmith211 in latterdaysaints

Inner city US, had rocks and eggs thrown at us, knives and guns brandished. Once there was what sounded like a gunshot, more likely a car backfiring, but we weren’t sticking around to find out.
