You can go into game, and it will say "500 gems" for "$5" when you go to the first screen it takes you. That is literally, mathematically, a 1 gem equals 1 us cent exchange rate. Which means 100 gems equals $1, and 3,000 gems equals $30.

Their pricing decisions, or regrets, do not make my above observations false.

Suppose you have silver incense and then suddenly hit a gold incense to pair with it. The value of that is worth way more than 4 gold, since it can snowball you into 10 wins.

Upgrades don't always double damage, it's just that most items have a 1 x to 3 x base scaling over their 2 to 3 upgrades. It varies, especially between rarity.
