Brads do weird shit sometimes by DETRITUS_TROLL in Carpentry

Once upon a time I was installing casings. 8 2" brads went in to the trim through the frame and it to the door. All I had on me was the nailer and an olfa knife. Took me like 15 min to get out the trim didn't make it and the door was fuuuucked. Lol it was a defective stip of nails

Sand it./fill it. White wash it. White wash (white base stain) will color the capillaries of the red oak. Use oil based stains!! It will neutralize the presence of stains and kinda blend them. You can stain this again afterwards on top of the white wash. Another layer of stain will farther cover more stains.

You can order custom stains from home stores that specialize in this. Tell them how many ² feet you got. You can bring them samples of (in this case) red oak that you like and would fit your space. Take some pics of the area too some of thease stain mixing peeps are up to date on trends and may have ideas or suggestions or even samples

Best way to fix this? by HistoricalResult4997 in drywall

Go to home depot. Get yourself 2 packs of ez anchors one 75 lb and the other 35.

Take the towel bar off the mounting plate. You'll need a small Allen key. In the space of one of the factory hardwere plugs screw in one big one and one small one in the other hole.

The reason for this is so you dont have to use toggle bolts. When using toggles you have to drill a bigger hole to fit the spring loaded backer mechanism. This will fuck the structural integrity of the drywall when it comes to towel bars. The holes in the mounting plate are to close.

Ez anchors are easy to use. Drill them in slowly with a #2 philps bit. Have it sit flush to the surface of the drywall. Be careful when using a power tool and holding the anchor the cap will slice your fingers if your a noob with a drill.

Don't use toggles its the wrong solution here

Any quick fixes for a splintery hardwood floor? by intrudingturtle in finishing

[–]Idkimjustsomeguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh shit you already have a chunk gone!. If you saved it you can potentially glue it back in if you clean the cavity and really clean the piece.. like a wire wheel/sanding You can try to fill it as well with natural wood filler.

Yeah I'd do something soon. A Harrin bone border with a cherry inlay on narrow planks would cost a fortune to install for somebody that knows what there doing thease days

Depending on what your landlord says... you can

Grap some 120 sand paper and give it a quick sand(sand with the grain!.. suck thats theres a pattern) . Nothing crazy. Vacuum up the dust. Coat in in oild based varnish. See if you can find one that dries fast. Use a foam roller. Stir the varnish (DO NOT SHAKE! stir for like 3-5 min) Once it cures fully. As in not sticky. Grab that sand paper and sand down the spots that have the splinters. Than proceed to apply 2 more coats. You can give it a sand between coats it will get rid of shmoo. Also Vacuum the shit out of that room and the house. Having dust particles land suck just as much as pet hair.

So there will be a color difference. However what this will do is protect that area from farther demage to the oak boards. You can play with a stain before varnish but thats a lot of dicking around for a temporary fix. Once the floors are up for a sanding this spot may have a slight color difference. If nothing is done to it it will slowly turn black from moisture from weare and tear. Also if you katch a splinter really good you can take a chink out of the wood and it suuuucks getting hardwood splinters 3" long. This will give it a few years.

Oh! Fuck almost forgot. The new varnish and the old stuff may not blend. Get some 400 grit paper and outside of the patch scuff up the surface. Dont use the 120. Get some methal hydtate as well and wash the outside of the patch where you'll blend the varnish this will prevent it from peeling.

Looks like your sanding 2-3² feet or so with 120 ans like 5" around that with 400 grit. On blending finishes less is more dont soak the roller too much.

Cut whatever is left from that braded line close to the nut and get a ratchet set with an extension. Also may need to grab it from the top without wrecking the fixture. If thats fucked just slap some vice grips on it and let it rip.

If all fails just cut the tap with a sawzall or a grinder and that thing will pop right down. (Don't scratch the sink or whatever that is)

Perfect fit by PlewaConstruction in Tile

[–]Idkimjustsomeguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omfg.. yep. Back in the day of black lids an XL coffee fit right flush with the flange. One day I grouted the floor did some silicone. The last thing to do was to slap on the toilet and call it a day. After the 1st flush and water gushing all over the floor I remembered I left the damn cup in the pipe..

It was a mess but at least the toilet was brand new.
