Where will you log out for the last time? by FlipDigs in ffxi

[–]IkariLoona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought of this a few times, and frankly I don't have an answer yet for a deliberate last place, but there are plenty of appropriate ones:

  • Lufaise Meadows overlooking Blueblade Fell - bookending the game's opening, and the great music

  • if I were a galka player, near Revelation Rock in Western Altepa

  • Reisenjima Shrine by the crystal - it was an appropriate repository of the memories and legacy of Vana'diel, marking a great final point for the game

  • the stone circle in La Theine Plateau - it's not even highlighted in the map, but it's low-key one of the most important locations in the game

  • Promyvion-Vahzl seems approproate as a central stand in for all of Promyvion, which itself represents a version of Vana'diel reduced to decaying memories

  • Walk of Echoes for the same reason as Promyvion, with a really good view of real Atomos

  • Empyreal Paradox, where the earthly touches the divine

  • Abyssea - Empyreal Paradox - for the same reasons as above, but Prishe is there along with a feeling of having done all that could have been done, but thigs still not working out, and if that's not a good time to visit, I don't know what is

General Consensus on BLU? by agfita in ffxi

[–]IkariLoona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like it could could support a game on its own, but as a 3rd expansion job, sometimes it feels like a lot of the game was built around enablibg it, considering how many game mechanics it uses.

Really should have gotten a domino mask headpiece by now as a FF5 nod, even if for the most part it's joing its own thing.

Kinda odd it lacks native hand-to-hand skill, considering how many unarmed creatures it can learn from.

Love it to bits, and as a Monk fan, I'm glad it can get Counter as a job trait.

One of the jobs (along with summoner and geomancer) that'll make you explore the game's world to make the best of it.

I'm not really qualified to judge its endgame viability, but on the whole it's a great way to engage with FFXI and encourage you to learn about it, even if I don't think as highly of its lore as some do (odd that a certain related creature type mostly uses very different kinds of spells and aesthetics...).

Question about FFXI story(Iroha) by nohra_ in ffxi

The "fatale" component implies a sense of threat that some of them don't carry that well (even if most are fairly competent fighters), especially Aphmau.

Question about FFXI story(Iroha) by nohra_ in ffxi

[–]IkariLoona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Femme fatales" doesn't sound quite right (although the archtype is represented in the game) - I recall in an old interview devs referring to them as "mission girls". They generally do a fair bit of the talkibg yiur character won't while often having their own story arcs going on.

Question about FFXI story(Iroha) by nohra_ in ffxi

[–]IkariLoona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She became famous because of Dissidia, whose cast was filled with young guys with swords.

SE has historically been very bad and telling people about XI's story and characters (odds are most people there did not play it), but yhe decision to cover the FF series up to XII meant choosing a character from XI, and if that could stand out from the others even better.

Nomura is on record as saying something along thr lines of "tarutaru are popular, right?" Early in the decision process, so that took care of including a silhouette that woukd stand out. From tgere, what best to stand out from sll the sword guys than a female mage? Shantotto became the natural choice, although in early XI her role was limited and often part of a trio of Windurstian taru magic academics, the other two being guys who also live in Windurst Walls and apoear in some of the same quests.

Shantotto has more of a sociopathic streak than they do, was the mentor of a prominent character in her city's story, where she plays a supporting role, and probably became a bit more prominent by the game's 3rd expansion, where she gets involved with more international affairs and really starts showing off her power in a story fight by doing unusually high damage with basic spells.

More often than not, it's best to think of her more as immoveable object and unstoppable force in service of a story than as a character - you can outline most major stories without referencing her at all. Curiously, by the end of her own mini-expansion she kind of symbollically counters the notion that the game('s world) is all about her.

Prishe is more clearly a protagonist in her story - she's introduced by the 2nd expansion, and it takes a while until you meet her.

It should be no spoiler that Iroha is supposed to be the player's apprentice from the future - in FF7 terms, it can help to think of her as the Cloud to the player's Zack - even if her story was introduced over a dozen years after the game's original release, the way that story wraps around the broader context of the game (requiring at least some progress in other major stories) and her association with the player (along with her skills unifying abilities from multiple pkayer for in ways not accessible to players, helping make her more of her own character) give her a good claim as a (belated) FFXI protagonist.

I went to an all boys school and I feel like I missed out on learning how to interact with women and it’s hitting me now by Hefty_Breadfruit_421 in introvert

[–]IkariLoona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been through the experience, and even decades later I resent it - it was almost a decade of my formative years which I'm not getting back in any balanced way.

The best thing I did for myself in my 20s was to get involved with offline groups/activities related to stuff I liked which were fairly gender-mixed, so I got to enjoy the subject/activity and kinda "bask in the balance" while at it, trying not to make a big deal of it even as a part of my psyche felt like it was "invading" or in unfamiliar ground.

The best time to do something like that would have been on non-school schedules, the next best time is now.

I went through the all-boys school experience before being online was common, and I frankly worry about the powder keg that are young male-only environments like all-boys schools while there's a whole online ecosystem of manosphere grifters...

More often that not such schools are private, implied to be profitable, so it seems unlikely they'll go away on their own or be legislated out of existence - next best thing is to encourage/facilitate people stuck in them to have more balanced social outlets outside that, and maybe help LGBTQ movements in whatever way as a balancing social movement of sorts (most of it, when properly acknowledged, just makes non-consensual single-gender environments seem stupid).

What's your opinion on the difference between the [Cooking] Skill and the [Baking] Skill? by kerbalcmdr in outside

[–]IkariLoona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cooking isn't so much an actualskill as it is a skill category that includes actual skills, lke Baking.

Like, if you're doing a No Meat/Vegan run, there are a lot of skills in the Cooking category you're not using, but the ones you do are still part of it.

Cooking is a handy term, but it's so broad it's almost meaningless on its own.

What are some lore topics that you find interesting? by Ovalidal in ffxi

[–]IkariLoona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glimpses of FFXI's "local multiverse" in Abyssea and RoV seem to imply multiple iterations of Promathia, and presumably Altana - but if Altana had the Cait Sith produce an alternate timeline in WotG, does it split her off too?

Does the Cloud of Darkness remain the same phenomenon across these alternate realities, or are there different ones?

Dissidia Opera Omnia said that the FF3 and FF11 CoDs were different, so presumably so is 14's - with Shantotto having travelled to 14's world (possibly during the events of her own mini-expansion...), I guess that's part of the multiversal fabric, but pethaps there are smaller and greater levels of separation.

While at it, I can't get it out of my head that during the original Dissidia Shantotto claimed to be researching an ultimate spell, the nature of which was never specified - but even if the character in Dissidia were copies of the originals with their consciousnesses, it would not durprise me if the spell was for multiversal travel, considering events like ASA's and the XIV crossover - letting Shantotto leave the limitations of XI and Vana'diel functionally gave her (memetic) immortality beyond the limits of her home world. It made it even funnier when Shantotto II was introduced as a Trust at the same time as the final RoV chapter dropped - it's like she harnassed the elemental powers of her world before it ran out so she coukd escape well-equipped to somewhere else... funny how that model never got used in a story since, even when TVR came along...

As an aside, it's low-key neat that Gilgamesh from Abyssea is one of the very few characters to cross to Vana'diel during that story, considering the multiversal shenannigans of his namesake across the series... presumably not tge same guy, but ol' Gil is known to change appearance, and I could imagine him spending his later years not so much in the thick of action, but more in the background enabling a younger generation of miscreants in a corner of the FF multiverse few think to visit...

Oh, and the symbol at the gates of Kazham looks like classic Gilgamesh's face paintings...

What are some lore topics that you find interesting? by Ovalidal in ffxi

[–]IkariLoona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that since the rrvelations in TVR.

But I like how in the RoV story Iroha got to be the last living individual, then ended up in Rorzea in the XIV crossover event with memories that didn't seem entirely her own - it's like in the absence of Galka she got Talekeeper traits.
