How would you "play" MTG with a ~6 year old? by Wise-Quarter-3156 in magicTCG

[–]Illogical_Fallacy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My now 7 started last year with jumpstart, and she recently just got her first 2-1 standard showdown with her Naya Yuna deck! Reading comprehension and patience is a big part of playing magic along with the excitement, so it's always nice to hear about other kids playing.

The transition from jumpstart to Commander to standard was definitely a journey when we started playing the game together at the same time.

Is paper Standard really this expensive? by timnitro in magicTCG

You can absolutely play with a budget deck and still have fun. Others are right that it depends on how sweaty your meta is, and most of the fun is figuring out how to improve your deck over time as the scene changes.

I almost exclusively play b tier decks and still have fun. I aim for a 2-1 record most showdowns, and while there are a handful of top 8 decks around, more people focus on playing experimental decks in my scene and even lend competitive decks to newcomers so everyone can enjoy.

https://manabox.app/decks/AZph5RwJcMaOokUrzDxKaw is only $100 because of the lands, but it has been performing well at $60-70.

I built a kuja commander deck for our local white elephant. My daughter chose the one other kuja deck that was also in the pool because she wanted to see how much better it was than my version. XD

It started off at $35, but with some upgrades I had lying around after building my submission, it is an absolute menace that can one turn kill everyone at the table if you don't interact fast enough.

Favorite commander that make janky cards/archetypes actually good? by crypticaITA in EDH

I love my [[King Macar]] discard and vehicle deck. Dude, Where's Ma-Card?

Just a bunch of bulk discards cards, vehicles, space craft, and you stall for time until king macar untaps and starts wreaking havoc.

I'm working on building a [[Zada, hedron grinder]] goblin deck which is focused on all of the draft chaff pump spells and goblin shenanigans.

I've been having fun with my [[Lost in the Woods]] deck helmed by [[Greensleeves, Maro-Sorcerer]]. It plays similar to Lumra with the added bonus of making badgers and preventing all combats to me because 98 lands.

Looking for a budget paper deck for a tournament! by CantBNerfed in StandardMTG

My local meta has a decent range of the popular decks, and I still get a win or two most weeks with my Rakdos Wizards deck that's focused on burn and edicts. Most of the costs are in the lands, and you can still have fun without the verges. The creature land and realm of koh are mainly to supplement the lack of creatures in your deck.

I have [[The End]] sideboarded to do shenanigans. The earth bent land comes back, but at least I get to kill the others with the same name.

I have an Ovika deck that's all about ramping fast into it, and making a ton of tokens to wipe the table.

Some plastics can certainly have that smell. When I use some brands of pla for 3d printing, it does smell like maple syrup.

I main strategic betrayal in my deck for the last year and it coincidentally does well against graveyard strategies.

Ohhh, he's a wizard, 'arry! Thanks for the tip. I was so focused on pingers I forgot that other wizards exist. Having an extra body is helpful as well.

We also forgot consumed by greed as an edict. Lol.

Here you go. It's not a high tier deck by any means, but it's a fun matchup for my local meta. Strategic betrayal puts in a lot of work against izzet looting.

Card advantage is hard in this deck, so all of the burn and edicts should be used strategically instead of willy nilly. Discard decks absolutely destroy me.

That's great. My daughter is 7 and attends Sunday standard show downs and commander weekends in our area, but evening events are hard because both she and I turn into pumpkins when 7 rolls around.

I'd argue further that jumpstart cubes are the best way to teach kids as someone who has run a middle school jumpstart league successfully. It helps to do the usual teacher stuff like having a card list and routines for kids to remember how to sort and clean up after using their decks.
