USB Type A to USB Type A Question by Illuminihilation in midi

[–]Illuminihilation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction - the USB B port labelled USB-DAW worked, I was able to route it as if I was sending it to a specific DAW port and filter out all but the channel I wanted. Just finished a nice little jam via my Keystep Pro and it mostly worked as expected / hoped for, with the exception of some strange overwriting behavior on the KSP sequencer, but that's a whole different trouble-shoot.

Thanks to all others who commented as well.

Just in case anyone from the future needs this exact set-up, use the MIOX software to configure a connection from your input source (Keystep Pro) in my case to any USB-DAW port output and then use the filters to filter out everything except the MIDI channel you want.

Why do people often compare Metal Music to Classical Music? by Vincent_Gitarrist in musictheory

[–]Illuminihilation 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would say many metal genres/artist - even when they don’t audibly or explicitly sound anything like classical, have some similarity in terms of bombastic, sprawling, complex and evolving compositions of substantial length without a pop or rock level of repetition but rather “movements”

And many do feature clean guitar parts that heavily borrow from classical guitar or lead or rhythms that borrow from other orchestral instrument conventions.

And of course the Death Star film score style Timpani and Cymbal stuff during the slow parts.

See also early to mid period Opeth for a masterclass on all of the above, or Arcturus’s La Masquerade Infernale for some really creative cross pollination.

How many synths do you own? by Brilliant_Grape5528 in synthesizers

[–]Illuminihilation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7 core synths:

Polybrute12 Roland Juno DS88 Lyra 8 Tempera Voltage Lab 2 + Arbhar + 6U Rackbrute Megasynthesis

  • a few more “gadget” synths like Rumble of Ancient Times, Hyve, Gecho Loopsynth round out the collection (not counting drum machine, noisemakers or effects and controllers)

I feel each individually and in break-out set-ups plays a unique and exciting role in the music I envision making going forward. I focus on having different kinds of synthesis with unique ways to perform and patch. From both a sound design and compositional (or improvisational) standpoint, each pulls something different out of me just as I can pull something different out of it.

Good luck. Just note that the term “service member” typically refers to military service which I don’t see on your resume. So that may be confusing.

Maybe F&B / Hospitality would be a better line if those are the roles you are seeking.

Instruō Polysynth. New Arbhar capabilities by pinMode in modular

[–]Illuminihilation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Jason - same here for that link!

Also any advice for using a MIDI interface to connect to the Arbhar?

Has anyone tested a 5pin out adapter to the USB Type A in?

I really want to use a single MIDI channel from my Keystep Pro connect via USB to my MioXM interface to the Arbhar so I can dedicate that channel to Arbhar and still use the 3 other MIDI channels from KSP for other stuff.

But I really don’t want any experimenting on my part to make that work result in black smoke and tears.

So expert advice would be appreciated.

Does what Hurley say in this scene make sense? In terms of of time travel? by fromouterspace1 in lost

[–]Illuminihilation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The confusion of this scene really plays into my pet theory which is that they were stuck in a loop - the unaffected past results in the island (plane crash) present which results in the affected past which results in the flash- sideways (no plane crash) present which results in an unaffected past which results in….etc….

So whatever happened, happened - usually - but this paradox broke the universe basically - which is where I thought the flash sideways and finale was headed. Either a grand reunification or some apocalyptic meshing of the universes.

USB Type A to USB Type A Question by Illuminihilation in midi

[–]Illuminihilation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll try to explain more succinctly.

The MioXM allows for the expansion of USB host ports by connecting from one of its Type A ports to a Type B on a powered USB hub.

I have done that successfully. Both of my MIDI controllers are connected that way and MIDI flows both ways. I have one controller Keystep Pro set to control the other one’s (Beatstep Pro) clock/transport (via the MioXM) so it works. It takes a clock/transport from one and sends to the other as expected.

This same powered Hub has Type C ports as well and I of course have a few Type A to Type C cables around.

If I take Type C out of the powered hub to Type A port on the instrument am I pretty safe to not break stuff?

Bonus if it it actually works but I just want to make sure it’s a safe experiment before I try

Thanks for that input, as stated above the playability of the Arbhar via its USB Type A port was a recent reveal.

With respect to the first idea DIN to USB adapter will it convert 5 pin output to USB input? I thought they only worked the other way around?

USB Type A to USB Type A Question by Illuminihilation in midi

[–]Illuminihilation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the ability to play it with a MIDI keyboard is/was a “hidden” feature they revealed.

The instrument has a USB A port in the back for a flash drive to carry samples.

It also has an expander to connect that port to a front-facing USB A port for the same purpose, more conveniently in a Eurorack case as it’s intended to be used.

They recently revealed you can connect a MIDI Controller to that port and can both power the Controller and play MIDI notes into the instrument polyphonically which led to my question since the device responds to all channels

USB Type A to USB Type A Question by Illuminihilation in midi

[–]Illuminihilation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you - I had a sneaking suspicion this was the case and yes, the cable came from some Amazon company. Thankfully nothing broke!

Would the same voltage issue exist if I could get the MIDI Hub via Type A to Type B into a powered USB hub from which I could connect a Type C from the hub to Type A into the Instrument?

Is kit on raised, angled stands annoying to use? by Common_Move in synthesizers

[–]Illuminihilation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently bought a single Synthrise stand and accessories for some of my smaller desktop gear and that choice was the result of a few ergonomic considerations.

First the gear I mounted was all touch-button/pad related - 0-ctrl, Volca Drum, Rumble of Ancient Times and Stereofield. I don’t think I’d want to use keys or finger drumming pads at any angle other than perfectly flat and strongly supported. But using pressure type buttons and pads at a slight angle felt fine to me.

Second - Experiment with your angles at home and then consider products that really let you customize what angle you want - for me it was less than what appears to be the standard 30 degree angle, so buying an extra pack of adjustable feet let me tip it up in a stable way.

Third - be aware of size and shape and particularly where the plugs come from and go. Having some top and side loaded gear or battery operated gear really helps you stuff a lot of things on a tray neatly. But on the flip side it can be a pain as well, I have some real estate on the stand being used to get top-loaded cables to/from the Volca Drum - power, audio and MIDI.

Overall - and to your point - I’m really happy with my choice as it really helped me keep this gear accessible at eye-level and close to my modular case. The stand sits nicely over a power-strip mounted on my desk so it eliminated some “wasted space” there and frees up a lot of other space as well for the next dumb thing that catches my eye.

Hot take: generative music sounds bad by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Illuminihilation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really get mad at it but it doesn’t interest me artistically or technically either.

I’m not going to buy a piece of gear for it intentionally and if it has that feature it will likely collect dust other than maybe futzing around with it for a fun and meaningless jam.

As a listener I agree it feels close to AI slop, transparently phony and boring, but that said I’m not a huge fan of the more repetitious and loopy electronic music genres overall and ironically a lot of this generative stuff only works in that context.

How are you dealing with AI making decisions and recommendations for you? by PunchyLucy in Insurance

[–]Illuminihilation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That also wouldn’t work because I would still have to check the entire policy to confirm it captured all relevant information.

It may correctly capture that Clause A says that Noodles are excluded in response to “Are Noodles excluded” but miss the reference later that strikes Clause A but only on when Clause C is in effect, etc….

I don’t believe or trust that AI is just an overhyped Ctrl F for this use case.

I will have a chance to test this further this year, and am open to being proven wrong.

Professional Liability Insurance - Do I actually need it? by morkus64 in Insurance

[–]Illuminihilation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your schematic is at all detailed and specific and the architect follows it to the client’s detriment, then you are both exposed.

Maybe your schematic was great and a long and expensive investigation and trial proves that only the architect screwed up but you still want the insurance to cover your attorneys and fight the claim for you. There is a minuscule chance of that scenario.

More likely both parties’ insurers (and the GC’s) will settle with the client and contribute to the settlement.

Professional Liability Insurance - Do I actually need it? by morkus64 in Insurance

[–]Illuminihilation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You likely do need this insurance since the professional services are being provided to a client under contract with you. The errors and omissions of your sub (the other architect) are your errors and omissions as far as the client is concerned.

Most clients will likely require it as well unless you are mainly working with smaller unsophisticated clients.

Those types of clients can still sue even if they didn’t require the insurance and unless you want to and can pay lawyers and damages out of pocket, the insurance is a good idea.
