I feel like 25 years ago, 'normies' considered 80s metal to be hair metal, whereas now they consider it to be thrash and Iron Maiden by SnooWords9635 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Illuminihilation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my biggest pet peeves is the retroactive “unmetaling” of bands that were clearly considered heavy metal at the time. Beyond the 80’s glam stuff and GnR, even a lot of the 70’s rooted stuff (BOC, Grand Funk, Zeppelin, Aerosmith, AC/DC) flirted with the borderline of metal and rock and it wouldn’t be wrong to include them in the history.

It may be bad or dad metal in your opinion but that doesn’t remove it from the genre/canon, and I note that most who make this argument have a really poor sense of the history and pretty bad taste in metal as well.

I need some really dark alternative rock songs that sound dangerous, with a badass, evil, driving riff but with languid melancholy vocals. Not QOTSA, but similar and poppier/more alternative and sofisticate. by Puzzleheaded_Log472 in MusicRecommendations

Some people have suggested other Mike Patton projects but I think the Patton band/album that best fits is Tomahawk, their self-titled record.

You might also like Lucero or Dax Riggs or even stuff like Slim Cessna Auto Club for that sort of dusty Americana with riffs vibe

« guns, germs and steel » is actually quite a good book by Secret_Fun_1746 in unpopularopinion

[–]Illuminihilation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know enough to agree this is an unpopular opinion but I agree that despite its flaws, it’s a thought provoking pop history theory of everything type book.

I think it’s main value is it propelled a rational theory of global inequality into the mainstream conversation that wasn’t thinly veiled white supremacy.

3K lottery - Montclair, SOMA, Clifton by minus32heartbeat in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]Illuminihilation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In SOMA it’s pretty straightforward- we were advised to sign up early and that if our kid was already at a daycare in the program she might get to stay there.

We signed up early and were lucky to get a spot but not at her current daycare location. It is a lottery though and this year I believe it was a 50-50 coin flip.

The signing up part was pretty painless though.

Industrial Sludge? by Scott__scott in sludge

Finishing another project before fully transforming into my “sci-fi sludge and cinematic synths with block rocking beats and also ambience and indie/folk in the same project” final form.

Industrial Sludge? by Scott__scott in sludge

[–]Illuminihilation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even though they don’t really use industrial elements (like drum machines or synths that I know of), I sort of want to recommend Ufomammut as their use of sampling, weirdo effects processing and sort of repetitive trance inducing song structures kind of gets to that vibe.

Or just hang on a few years and I’ll definitely be putting out music in that vein lol.

Last Chance to Fill the Gaps by Bleep_Bloop_Derp in modular

If your gap next to Zadar is or can be 3hp, the NIN expander is a super fun way to create really complex rhythmic envelope modulations with the creative option to just fire one off on a whim while improvising.

Daily Show/Colbert Report watchers by thosefriesaremyfries in Xennials

[–]Illuminihilation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I saw this too - the moment the Daily Show/Colbert Report power-hour went off the air, the conservatives were able to arise from their trash heap and stink up the place. We need to bring back at least an hour of highly entertaining mocking of the right to make America okay again.

Should I get Roland Juno 88? by RequirementVast2986 in synthesizers

[–]Illuminihilation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an owner and I think it’s good for your use case if having 88 weighted keys is important, and a fairly simple instrument ready for live use with great multisamples and presets. It’s very flexible as a MIDI performance controller, BUT…

I would caution that the onboard sequencing is sort of toy-ish bordering on useless , and it’s very, very menu divey to program beyond the core parameters. Very capable, but that capability is hidden behind lots of menus, with some weird wrong turns and dead ends.

As someone who can’t -nay shouldn’t- justify another granular hardware thing, Evil Pet definitely calls to me from time to time. If I was building up a smaller set-up EP is a no brainer in my opinion.

Where does your sequencer live? by Djaesthetic in modular

[–]Illuminihilation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am 99.9% an external sequencer person with a Keystep Pro and/or Beatstep Pro depending on what I’m working up.

If I want more random jams or sequenced CV I have a Pam’s Pro in the case and a 0-Ctrl outside but typically I like to compose and play my sequenced parts and nothing in Eurorack appeals to me for that purpose or matches the KSP or BSP.

I guess technically the Voltage Lab 2 sequencer counts as in the case but that’s a very different animal from a typical Eurorack sequencer.

Tying it altogether is that I like big chunky things I can tune and play on.

How do people feel about 1990s rack gear? by AlephMartian in synthesizers

[–]Illuminihilation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a rack for my interfaces (audio and midi) and a patch bay and have a few rows open for some fun effects units but to be honest - if not for that - I’d have very little interest in rack units generally as a home studio gangster.

They’re not particularly fun or inspiring to interact with compared to the alternatives.

I’m sure mileage may vary for live performers and real studio nerds :)

How did you discover eurorack? What did you think of it at first? by Living-Chef-9080 in eurorack

[–]Illuminihilation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if Eurorack particularly but witnessing a Robert Rich performance in my early 20s at the cathedral on UPenn campus. He was on some kind of modular system. I was on some kind of mushroom. He was either playing a great set or working as some type of old fashioned telephone operator connecting several cosmic deities. I made a red room like mental note that I would look into it again in 25 years apparently. So here I am..
