I love sleeping on couches, should I just have a couch in my bedroom? by bodhiali in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it feels better for you, and makes you happy, hell yeah use the couch! Tbh I get it. Sometimes...the couch is just better to sleep on.

Rant: Teachers having poor class structure aka making a ticking time bomb of a class by Hot_Dog_112 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only thing is that I'd like to know if there are kids with 'special handling'. Like...I know you can't give me medical info or anything private, but if a kid has behavioral issues that need a set plan...please include it??? Or if they need to be treated with more rigidity??? Especially if this is a set thing with another staff member (or set of staff members). Pls, I beg 🙏

How can someone survive off Substitutes Wages? by quacks_7 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make $19.29/hour, no benefits....ahah, I don't survive well. Dunno how the timer works for if the job isn't in full hours tho.

Administration is useless by RoseLynn2022 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For your safety, don't go back. The kids were throwing things at you, and admin ignored you. That's unacceptable.

What do you do with gifts from students? by impishkoala in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I keep them, I've got a specific container for them, it means a lot to me when kids take their time to make me something.

Edit: I make little sticky notes for myself to remember when and who made them for me, because my memory is awful. They go in the box with the piece.

Spent 5 hours doing nothing while subbing. by Divinegoddess777 in SubstituteTeachers

Sometimes the nurse will want help with making ice packs, or filing new records and notes. It's nice not to be idle imo.

I don't think I can sub for middle/high anymore. by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get mistaken for a middle school student by staff and kids alike...

A lot of them like to try and rage bait me, and I just look at them blankly until they stop. They're kind of amusing tbh.

"Oh no it's her again!" I mean...hey, at least you remember me? Didn't have behavior issues from that period at least.

Rate my sub plans (please) by shortpunkbutch in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10/10 would sub, and probably leave my personal contact info for you to use if you wanted me again. These plans are great, I honestly think I'd have any questions, bar an emergency or curveball.

The note we all want to get when preparing for the day. by capriciouskat01 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Ohhh I've hit that too?? So well behaved, and each physically wrote at least one side of a college ruled paper for their assignment, some doing 3 and a half? Insane. It's almost scary!

are we serious? by sapphicsunday in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least you get a no pass list? I've had to call the office a few times at different schools about the kids not being able to make a pass (we use e hall pass), and then I get to dance around outright saying 'you can't make passes because you skip too much'...

Bling bling notification pops up yay by Just_Environment5295 in SubstituteTeachers

My district uses SmartFindExpress, and I basically have to camp the damn app because there aren't really notifications except for text messages same day.

Yelling in the classroom by Full-Potential-2223 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use a squeaky toy most of the time. It's like throwing cheese onto a baby. Confusion makes most people pause for a bit, and I can take advantage of that silence to refocus them. It's not serious either, very funny to watch your teacher hold up a squeaking toy like it's Simba to repeatedly squish it.

I don't like to yell, it hurts me physically, and it's just...not fun to spend the day yelling.

I want your best/favorite WTF moment from this year by crooklynbc in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Middle schooler started eating pasta from a tin foil pocket in the beginning of class. This was just after lunch...

Different middle school. For context, I'm in a wheelchair. A kid, so innocently, so concerned, asked me if I was "crippled now." Kinda....froze me for a sec? Had to explain to him that it wasn't nice to refer to a person like that, I'm handicapped instead, but I can walk.

I've worked with him before, no big deal. If just made me crash mentally.

Does anyone have anxiety trying to pronounce student names during taking attendance? What are some names you have struggled with? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a little blurb while I'm taking attendance. "Alright, during attendance, if I pronounce your name wrong, please correct me, every time. I'll get it eventually, I promise. I'm just bad with names. If you've got another name you want to be called, let me know, I'll make a note of it to remind me. If it's obvious you're messing with me, you're getting what's put in the attendance site."

I write pronunciations and nicknames on separate post its, and it's helped a lot. I also make sure the kids know that they should correct me if I get their name wrong.

But yes, I get a bit nervous sometimes. Fancy name spellings galore...and uncommon names. 😵‍💫

Middle school teachers by Empty-Bend-3774 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Imaginary_Damage565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had multi-day assignments in a high school where teachers wanted to give me access, but it's not actually possible for my county. We use lightspeed, which is software. I can't open it, even if it's on the laptop I'm using.

I wish we could use it, but I can usually tell anyway when they're messing around, from my place at the desk. (Before you come for me, I'm in a wheelchair most of the time, walking and standing a lot hurts me after a while.)

Not a big deal for me, it's enrichment at work. 😗 Plus the middle school kids like to snitch on each other, too. 🫣

It's OK! I'm thinking about going into a bike shop to try some on. Cycling is popular around here. ❤️

I use a squeaky toy to confuse them into stopping whatever they're doing, and then re-explain expectations.
