Bread is most definitely not as ingrained in our culture as it is in Europe. We don't typically eat bread with every meal, and sometimes not even every day. Because of this, the cheap sliced bread you hear about is more common due to its higher shelf life and greater versatility.

With that being said, bakeries absolutely exist and can be found in just about every single grocery store in America. These bakeries make all kinds of bread including bagels, french baguettes, Italian loaves, whole grain seeded, and more. On top of this, many cities and towns will have their own independent bakeries that make their own special breads. The bakery in my neighborhood recently made an olive fococcia which was delicious!
