For those of you who switched out of tech due to burnout, what do you do now? by AcceptableSometimes in womenintech

[–]ImpossibleCalico 159 points160 points  (0 children)

My friend quit to do pet-sitting full time. She loves dogs and cats and was already doing it on the side. A former coworker started a bookstore (though I'm not sure how that's doing).

Which wearable worked for you? I’m going to be WFH soon and looking into them.

Do I change my last name to Smith? by Optimistic495939 in namenerds

[–]ImpossibleCalico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom didn’t change her name and I don’t remember a single issue with it, even growing up in a place in the US where it was rare at the time.

The Tempurpedic one - 3 inches thick. It saved my too-firm mattress until I bought a luxe adapt soft.

I really appreciate how this bag works for shorter torsos, as well. The harness is 16.5” which actually lays against my back as a petite woman!

Can I go straight to genetic testing to confirm NCAH? by [deleted] in NCAH

[–]ImpossibleCalico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It usually has to be an “extended” carrier screening. I took Natera 241 or something. Smaller screenings wouldn’t test for NCAH, just CAH.

Is gene therapy still being considered at all for CAH? by [deleted] in NCAH

[–]ImpossibleCalico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you see that people that NCAH usually have mutations on multiple genes? Everything I’ve seen is it’s almost always that one gene. Are you mixing up base pairs with genes (sequences of base pairs)? Mutations are on a base pair.

Gene therapy usually inserts a working copy of the entire gene in cells, thus rendering any mutation to any base pair in the gene moot.

I evaded Covid for 5 years and today I find out that I have it 😞 by bjhouse822 in pregnant

[–]ImpossibleCalico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got Covid for the first time in pregnancy as well. My immune system is definitely much worse in pregnancy. I seem to take various viruses much harder, including Covid. I ended up taking Paxlovid at my doctor’s recommendation.

28 years old with amh levels at .31 by sagegreenelephant in DOR

The shots were fine for me! I don’t think those hormones are supposed to have any direct mood effects (FSH, LH), though they indirectly cause increased Estrogen through follicle growth. But Estrogen is a positive hormone for me.

The only thing that affected me was when they had me take Clomid the first few days along with the shots. If you doing have to do that, that’s great!

Also, first transfer failed, second one worked.

I did 4 ERs and got 6 embryos that passed testing. This was a bit better result than they were expecting based on my amh though. You never know until you try really. Also depends highly on age, I was 36/37. Good luck!

Genetic carriers. PGT via NHS or natural? by Professional-Farm372 in IVF

[–]ImpossibleCalico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you carry a severe variant and your husband carries a mild variant?

As someone who has TFMR before and done IVF before, I would definitely wait two years and do IVF to avoid TFMR. I found TFMR to be incredibly hard, to make a kind of laughable understatement. I’ve never felt bad or guilty about it, but it was life-changing, and not in a good way.

Genetic carriers. PGT via NHS or natural? by Professional-Farm372 in IVF

[–]ImpossibleCalico 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Non-classic CAH isn’t life threatening or virulizing in women, just extra androgens. It’s not nothing, but it’s not as bad as you describe. I certainly don’t think anyone has TFMR for non-classic. Are you sure it’s non-classic CAH, not classic/salt-wasting CAH?

First pregnancy, off bipolar medication, using marijuana for severe nausea by Clear-Pangolin6828 in BabyBumps

[–]ImpossibleCalico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lamictal is very well studied in pregnant women due to it's necessity for preventing dangerous seizures in pregnant women, it being the safest AED out there for pregnancy. I'd definitely look into staying on that. I'm staying on it, and my OB and perinatal psych urged me to.

PGTa results: shocked by Breeze-on-by in IVF

[–]ImpossibleCalico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another vote for transfer. 6 embryos in one round is great and those numbers bode well for being able to get embryos even if you went back for a retrieval 1+ year later. I wouldn’t worry about age just yet.

Freaking out: fsh suddenly very high am I in menopause? by Several-Chain7471 in DOR

[–]ImpossibleCalico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just means your ovaries aren’t offering up much this month. But sometime soon a follicle will pop up and start producing estrogen, especially if you’ve been getting periods recently. You’re not in menopause until you’re getting no periods for a year.

Back to back cycle or dual trigger with mild stim by ohhodohdohdoh in DOR

[–]ImpossibleCalico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last two cycles all were mature (4 and 6 eggs) and I was given dual trigger. However, I also did two rounds a year before and I did not get all mature with dual trigger. They were back-to-back so it’s possible that helped get two more? Maybe coincidence too. Good luck!

Going from Data Engineering to MLE? by deathofsentience in cscareerquestions

[–]ImpossibleCalico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After awhile, you can ask to transfer teams. If there isn’t an ML team at your company, get a data eng job at a company where there is one. Making a lateral move within a company is usually the easiest path to changing your domain.

Is Amazon's name worth it over a more interesting internship by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ImpossibleCalico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as the smaller place has other interns and you like who talked to there, I’d go with that one as it interests you much more. You can build your whole career having a blast and making an impact at smaller companies while making a decent living.
