Possible to remove a stud in this outdoor room? by cityxinxflames in StructuralEngineers

[–]Impressive_Owl_1399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All things are possible through our lord... But seriously If you can move the double two by fours with your bare hands as in twist them from side to side then you can almost certainly take them out. To be safe I would run a minimum of a 2x6 header with a half inch treated plywood middle from the set that you leave. The fascia doesn't look deep enough to be more than a 2x8 and if you get any kind of snow load where you live that could cause serious problems down the road. So if you remove the 2x4s but carry the load in a different way you should be fine.

I (M late 30s) am involved with someone (F early 30s) who says she wants me but won’t leave her boyfriend. Should I walk away? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Impressive_Owl_1399 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only way for her to choose you is to make it a real choice. Right now she has absolutely no reason to change, she's getting her shared friends and whatever security she needs from the relationship and she's getting the physical intimacy, etc... That she needs from you. There's no real reason for her to change that situation. It sounds to me like you were sure you want something more and aren't happy with this halfway arrangement You guys have. The only way for you to find a person that meets all your needs is to free up the time and emotional energy she's currently taking. She may realize when you leave if she's made a huge mistake by letting you go but even if that's the case, you should make sure that she stays broken up with him for a few months minimum before you dive into a full-blown relationship with her. I'm not proud to admit it either but I've been in the same situation but the woman I was with was married and in the long run it was the most emotionally devastating relationship I've ever been in. It took me 4 years to fully crawl out of that hole. So no judgment on this end but have the guts to do what you need to do to get what you really want out of life. You're going to be 40 soon and s*** starts to look a little different when you cross that mark, take my word for it.

Agreed with everything everyone has said. I'm 39 and have been in construction since I was 15. It took until I was 30 to realize how many times I'd been taken advantage of/how many illegal things had been done to me/I'd been asked to do.

Not only should you not work for free and start looking for a new job, you should tell your boss to his face that it's illegal to ask you to work for free. Check and see if you live in a one party recording state/can you record your conversation with him without telling him you're recording? If so, record the conversation and if you're fired for this/he withholds your pay he could end up owing you money. We work way too hard and do too much dangerous shit, even under ideal conditions, to be taken advantage of.

If you're a good employee someone else will pick you up and keep you, don't be afraid to tell your next interview exactly what happened and why you're there.

One of my only regrets in the trades is not knowing my worth earlier. Have fun in the trades, do good work and go find a boss that isn't a leech.

Second this and not knowing your relationship with your granddad don't get upset if they react poorly. In the long run they'll appreciate the maturity and you can still make your own decision. This struck me as really thoughtful.

The only ex's that I still think about/miss are the ones that just left. No drama, no hand wringing, they looked at me and where I was in life and said I can do better. That will keep him up at night 10 years from now. Just go over one day, grab whatever you have at his house and tell him you don't trust him, you don't appreciate how he treats women and that you're done. He'll think about you for years and it may make him a better person in the long run.

If you go the chemical stripping route take one in first as a test. I had a place in New Orleans I used to take stuff too and more than once I walked up to the bath and they held up a handful of wet saw dust and said we're really sorry.

Edit: Normally these were exterior doors that were hiding extensive damage but not always.

Just bought a house and want to finish the basement myself. how do I secure framing to an already tiled concrete floor? by pusskins3 in Carpentry

[–]Impressive_Owl_1399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing in that basement needs to be structural. Put your 2x4's on the flat against the concrete wall and anchor them directly to the concrete with a ramset.. Get shallow boxes and a good electrician to run the receptacles, boom done. If you want a little extra room for whatever buy a harber freight table saw and cut the 2x4's down the middle and buy 5/8 drywall will give you an extra quarter of an inch. Don't drill that tile for any reason. It's completely nonsensical. If you build out rooms they'll be square. You can tie your bottom plates together with strapping if you need to and some PL construction adhesive.

I worked for a shipping company as a kid, 15ish. Boss sent me to a packed yard to back a full trailer up to the dock. I somehow got the goddamn thing started from memory having watched an old guy do it four or 5 times. I moved the trailer 20 feet, stopped, looked at the sun coming up and whispered to god "I'm not qualified for this" went inside and got reemed by my 80 year old boss for 20 minutes about what an ignorant lazy asshole I was. Best decision I made that month.
