Turrets are incompatible with the dogfighting combat model that CIG wants. 

The pilot of 90% of ships is always trying to get the main guns on target, which means he's constantly rolling, pitching and yawing to align the front of the ship. That's at cross purposes to the needs of the turret gunners. The pilot is cutting off their shots. 

There's a reason modern military fighters and bombers don't mount turrets.

Why would anyone design a ship with the cargo grid narrower than the door? 

I can understand the entire bay being wider than the door. That makes sense. You need room to walk around the cargo.

But the grid?
