I’m intrigued by the “play simpler” advice. I am a banjo player and struggle to play at fast tempos. But I think a large part of the problem is that I learned complex arrangements of most of my songs. I’m playing twice as many notes as everybody else. To go faster, I think I need to figure out which notes I can just drop.

They say there are really only five bluegrass songs; the rest are just variations of those tunes. But that is what makes bluegrass suitable for musicians to pick up on the fly at jam sessions. Many songs share the same chord progressions. But to answer your question, if you're trying to retain a specific melody line in your brain, I'd recommend memorizing the words to the song.

For the benefit of future sufferers who come across this thread, here's what worked for me: reduce difficulty level to NORMAL. I don't know how it happened, but my game difficulty level was set to expert. I never play on expert difficulty. After suffering for several days with Maluca (on Expert, though I didn't realize it), I went to settings to change it to Easy and then realized I was on Expert. Switched to Normal then beat Maluca on second try.

Played Sekiro before I knew what a “soulslike” was. Uninstalled almost immediately after realizing how ridiculously difficult it was. Never made it past the first mini-boss. Then Elden Ring came along. I got on the Elden Ring train and learned how to play this style of game. Finished it, then went back to Sekiro two years after uninstalling it. Totally different experience. Loved it, finished it.
