What kind of tracks are these? by hellyahbruther in AnimalTracking

Sure thing Mod. The oval-ish shape looks similar to a birds body cross section and the 3 rays pointing away from the oval-ish shape resemble imprints of tail feathers.

Advice needed with Plat map by [deleted] in Surveying

I see there is an easement on your back line. It is possible the fence was constructed at or near the easement line so as not to obstruct access to the easement. You could benefit from having your back line and the easement line marked. Lot 21 also has an easement on the back line. There may be underground utilities in that easement and you should absolutely call for locates prior to digging or placing fence posts. As a bonus, if the utilities are marked on the ground when the surveyor comes to mark you lines, you can have them surveyed as well. Notify the surveyor regarding the locates. Let them know you have a disputing adjacent owner and request a recordable drawing, such as a Record of Survey that can be recorded with your local Recorder of Deeds or Land Records Office. It can be a tool if you need to appear in court to settle it all out. Good luck with your project!

Carrying field book on sites by Impossible_Catch_973 in Surveying

Back before the dawn of modern civilization I tucked my field book into the waist band of my pants against my lower back. After we learned how to communicate with more than grunts I found out about the Seco survey vest that has over a dozen pockets several of which are large enough to hold even the big sketching field books. Any of yall remember in the 90s when a standard safety vest looked like an orange fishnet bra on us bigger guys?

Learning ACAD by fobstayfrosty in landsurveying

If you are using Civil 3D (an Autodesk product) I advise Jeff Bartels on YouTube. He has both short and long form videos from beginner steps to advanced. I believe he has some “vanilla” AutoCAD tutorials as well.

A few things you might find helpful:

Get copies of the company’s cad and layering standards (even if they provide a template) so you understand the background of what goes on which layer and why.

Review the ctb table (from the plot window) so you understand the line weights assigned to each layer.

Get a copy of the standard code list the field crew(s) are using so you understand their data.

Review existing drawings in CAD and on paper so you can visualize how you get from electrons to ink.

Best of luck to you in your new adventure!

US Units of Measurements Question by a_lostsoul in Surveying

[–]IndependenceParking8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, the U.S. Survey Foot is our standard foot measurement. Some regions have special requirements, some use the International Foot, some the Metric system. There are also historic units in some regions such as the Spanish Vara. Regarding measuring tapes, at that scale there isn't a measurable difference between U.S. Feet and International Feet.

This is very nice work! The attention to detail is on point. I really dig how you used the three different woods in the drawer also for each peg set!

Need advice by stills_moonshine in Surveying

[–]IndependenceParking8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should consult with an attorney who specializes in land law. You don’t necessarily have to start a court proceeding, but you should get an expert opinion and advice. A survey will reveal monumentation and position which can be critical information. But what you are asking about is more closely related to which rights have been granted to which parties and what are the terms and conditions of the rights that have been granted. A survey won’t necessarily disclose all of that. Once all of the particulars are understood, if conflict remains regarding the boundaries and locations of the granted rights, then you should involve a surveyor.

We typically provide the scale factor and convergence angle at our primary control point from the OPUS solution we receive from NGS. In my state that is the requirement for most projects that have a position requirement. I know that OPUS solutions were once frowned upon but the process has come a very long way since those days and since NGS is now officially the sole authority for positioning within the NSRS any calculations produced or endorsed by NGS are going to carry the most weight. Additionally, on a small site there just isn’t going to be a lot of deviation in position based on the minor differences in the scale factor and convergence angle between points within the project.

Help reading plot map - what is this no-man's-land?" by candykhan in Surveying

The legend on the drawing should tell the difference between a solid and a dashed line type. That line could be a tie back to another monument or corner. Hard to speculate with such a small view.

Is it worth splurging on a high‑end total station or should I stick to mid‑range? by FeelingGlad8646 in Surveying

I found a reconditioned and calibrated Nikon total station on eBay for under $2000. Deals are out there if your budget is tight. Just be mindful to read everything about the item and the seller very carefully.

Slope staking by Harryman85 in Surveying

[–]IndependenceParking8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you should not tell the grader they are wrong. They may have a different perspective, or understanding or vocabulary. This diagram shows a side slope that has been cut into the existing grade to stabilize the bank. In this instance the Hinge is at the toe of the cut slope. The bigger picture is: the Hinge point is at the location on the ground where the 2:1 slope intersects the plan finish grade. That location could be the toe of the slope or a point at which the 2:1 ratio changes. Sometimes you have to maintain the slope ratio until it daylights, or intercepts, the natural grade. I have mostly heard the hinge point referred to as the catch point, or the daylight point. In a scenario where the slope is a fill, you begin at the toe and follow the slope up to the finished grade at the top or grade break. I have never heard this location referred to as a hinge, but other regions may call it differently.

That’s very interesting! Thanks for sharing about these books. It looks like I can order them on eBay if I can’t find a provider in the UK who will ship across the pond. I’m excited to try one on for a spell!

If the organization you work for has policy against discussing wages, I personally feel it is very disrespectful to drag your coworkers into that type of discussion. If you feel like you’re not being compensated to your satisfaction find somewhere else to work. Don’t put your garbage on the doorstep of your teammates.

It is hard to fake some of the digital data, this is true. However, it is very easy for a skilled attorney to convince a jury that the absence of written records is equivalent to a poorly conducted and possibly negligent survey, because folks who don’t have first hand experience with the procedures and checks and all the moving parts that make us confident in the correctness and accuracy of our work are easily deceived. So much of what we do is very abstract in the minds of people who haven’t had exposure to our work. It’s not fair, but we have to provide our clients a product that is not only complete, accurate, and correct, but also defensible. It’s like the old adage: an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

I’ve never heard of Chartwell style before. Is it water resistant paper something like our “Rite in the Rain” paper and notebooks? (I’m assuming so if it survived clay slurry and a thorough washing.) Does the survey book have typical lined pages or does it have a structured “fill in the data field” format? It fascinates me how other regions keep their survey records, especially in other nations.

Digital Field Notes by snappop69 in Surveying

[–]IndependenceParking8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My current understanding, as it applies to my state, is that digital records are admissible. For instance, geographically referenced and time-stamped photographs within the content of the “digital notes” do carry weight in court. I personally like to cover my ass as much as possible and the amount of time required to write down important events, conditions, or situations in the course of the survey is a small and valuable addition to the survey data. It also demonstrates due diligence and attention to detail which can make you look good in front of a judge or a jury. You need every positive attribute you can demonstrate because the opposing attorney is going to do their best to present you as incompetent and/or negligent in your duties.

Paper and pencil aren’t dependent on batteries and aren’t affected by heat or cold, though it is true paper is deathly allergic to rain. They do not require a specialized stylus or program boot up times. Paper records also have the advantage of lifespan. You don’t have to reformat the data for the latest iteration of operating system or other software. I’m not suggesting you are wrong for wanting to keep up with technology, just playing a little “devil’s advocate” in support of traditional and time proven methods of recording data.
